Illustrates the importance of the school, the self-sufficiency of the settlers, and the developing economic system evidenced in peddlers, the country gristmill, and stores in frontier towns using, barter to acquire and sell goods. Social life is pictures through scenes of quilting bee, men discussing politics and market prices, games and a spelling bee.
