Four Steps Forward

This film demonstrates the challenges of training new staff during wartime, when labor shortages lead to the hiring of employees with limited experience. The narrative follows two employees who express their frustrations regarding the difficulties of teaching trainees, only to discover that their previous methods—simply telling or showing someone how to do a task—are ineffective. Their supervisor introduces the "four-step method" of job instruction, which provides a structured approach to training: preparation to set the stage, presentation to explain the task, application to verify the learner's understanding through practice, and inspection to ensure the learner can work independently. By adopting this methodical approach, the supervisors learn how to better communicate expectations, reduce errors, and foster a more efficient, morale-boosting training environment.
