Description: Surveys family life in Japan and on the Canadian prairies, exploring the generalization that the care a child receives during his early years has an effect upon the continuation of the national character of a people by observing in rural, middle class families the intra-family relations, duties, and responsibilities especially as reflected in infant care. Margaret Mead discusses each family in turn and at the conclusion a sociologist from each nation summarizes the relation of child care to national character as evidenced in their nation. Points covered in the review of family life include: infant dress, differing roles of family members, eating patterns, means of discipline, modes of bathing the baby, and the special place of the child in the family.
