Fort Myers to St. Augustine, Florida by Philip H. Elwood, 1931 part 2

Description: Iowa State College landscape architecture professor Philip Elwood takes students on a tour of the southern and eastern United States. Shows crossing the bay at St. Petersburg and on to Ft. Myers where Royal Palms line the streets. Also shows the hotel grounds, Edison Park, and the winter home of Thomas Edison. From there they traveled to Coral Gables where they visited small gardens, Hotel Biltmore, and its swimming pool. It was then on to the Deering Estate in Coconut Grove where they saw the Italian details and the grounds of the winter home of Arthur Curtis James. From there it was on north past a golf club and hotel and past Miami. They saw homes and gardens near Palm Beach, and visited West Palm Beach. Then they headed back inland to Highland Hammock near Siebring, saw a cypress swamp, a grapefruit orchard and lake. It was then on to a bird sanctuary at Lake Wales where they saw its "Bok" or "singing tower" and saw flamingos in the lake. Also near Siebring they visited Ponce de Leon Springs where they saw the water feature that pumps 60,000 gallons per minute designed by A. D. Taylor of Cleveland Ohio, informal lake and old mill, and the hotel and swimming pool at Ponce de Leon Spa. Then heading back for the Atlantic coast, they visited St. Augustine where they went to see the remains of the old fort, the cathedral on the city square, and the old slave market.
