The Gamecocks lost to the Bulldogs 52-34. Notable Players: Carlton Haywood was the first African American football player at the University of South Carolina. John LeHeup was a First-Team All-American defensive lineman for the Gamecocks. Dickie Harris was a First-Team All-American kick returner for the Gamecocks in 1970. His 2,767 return yards (kicks, punts and interceptions) may never be challenged and during that 1970 season, he returned one of each for a touchdown. The return records at UofSC are mostly his name repeated. Tommy Suggs was the quarterback for the 1970 Gamecock football team and holds one of the most honored nicknames in program history, ''Clemson Killer.''
