This silent WOAI-TV news footage documents a Fire Prevention Week parade held in San Antonio, Texas, sometime in the 1960s. Marching bands, majorettes, and vintage fire trucks carrying bathing suit-clad beauty queens proceed down Houston Street. To help promote fire safety, it seems that fire departments would bestow titles like Miss Fire Prevention, Miss Flame, and Miss Spark upon local young women. This year’s Miss Spark features prominently. At the end of the parade, she and the other women disembark the trucks to pose for the crowd and the camera.
