Demonstrates the extent to which human resourcefulness can compensate for a lack of material abundance. Shows the Finnish people and their way of life in this glaciated, high latitude land of many lakes where the growing season is short and the soil, for the most part, not highly productive. By visiting with the Virtanen family we learn that Finland's principal resource is its forests and that many people combine their major occupations with part-time work in the lumbering industries. On a trip to the clean, modern seaport capital of Helsinki we learn of the strong cultural background of this hard-working people and develop an appreciation of their ideals and goals so similar to those for which Americans are striving in the world community of nations.
