Description: Reveals the serious mental and physical defects often found in the children of mothers who drank heavily during pregnancy. Shows Kenneth, a 21-month-old boy, and his two school-age sisters who exhibit the defects, such as shortened eye slits, flat facial profile, small brain size, and learning impairments. Presents Dr. David Smith, professor of pediatrics at the University of Seattle, who has characterized the syndrome and has found that the effects caused during prenatal development are irreversible. Discusses rat research which supports Dr. Smith's theory and concludes with an interview with a mother whose drinking has seriously affected her child.
