Presents the case history of John Murray, a hard-working businessman who suffers periods of deep despondency not easily explained. Uses flashbacks to show that this despondency is a form of self-punishment for his deeply buried jealousy of his more successful brother. Points out that John may be able to recover spontaneously, or that he may need a psychiatrist's help.
