FAR FROM ALONE

[Music] [Applause] dale yeah hey did you hear the alumni wants to name the new stadium for you when it's built i hear both parties water running for president of the united states i'll see you guys at the party all kidding to sign bob a great game what a small bunch of guys you are after he won the ball game for us too maybe we ought to put him up for president bob knows how he meant it ken yeah but you don't hear the coat saying anything do you well my day we take a man like bob easton and we ducked him in mill pond just to keep from getting the swelled head well there isn't any danger that was oh bob say that last play will be on the record books a long time you got an hour so to spare before the party tonight i thought i might be able to set you up for a little interview i'm telling it pete duncan's my boy he could use you tonight on his sports commentary pizza in new york but the network could cut you in from the station here i'll figure it with public relations now and pick you up about seven would like i know i'm sorry but no deal pete duncan's program's not for me what do you mean beer in my book an athlete's got no business promoting bear bob pete's not asking you to do the commercial he just wants a five-minute interview yeah i know but i'd rather not be associated with his stuff okay look bob you don't know this but you're being on the show might seem something you see the school's been trying to get the johnson foundation to give him an endowment well naturally everyone here is anxious to do whatever possible to please old man johnson i thought the foundation was supposed to be independent well let's be realistic the old man's money came from calendar beer and if we can make him happy by tying in his business with his love of sports and his desire to do good well you see what i mean yeah i do but beer and athletes just don't go together it's good i'd like to please the old man bob let me pick you up about seven by that time you'll see the school's angle ah don't waste your time here besides i've got a dinner date that starts at seven well son i'm afraid your mother and i'll have to be leaving for home well i'm so glad you came down i wonder how we'll get out of here though all those people who want autographs i tell you mother it's a responsibility having a son who's a celebrity well bear up dad next year at this time i'll be just another guy looking for a job i've never been able to understand people who attach so much importance to a game men especially they can shrug off an election but a football score oh my ah excuse me just a minute i'll be right back i guess he wants to hear some of the other scores as we said earlier our guest tonight is probably the outstanding collegiate football player of the year on or off campus real all-american caliber so let's switch across the country now and ask bob easton about that last play in today's game bob that was as brilliant a run as i ever saw i'm sorry ladies and gentlemen there's been a slip up i thought i had a cue to pick up bob easton from his local station but my director has signaled me that bob isn't there oh well perhaps we can talk with him some other time and now let's see about next week's game we shouldn't have started mr easton has to travel next week but oh here comes bob james i guess we can go now i'm sorry mother dad forget it you and marjorie finish we'll say goodbye here i'm gonna be down next weekend we'll try but if we don't make it you know we'll be pulling for the team be a good boy now bob see you soon goodbye marjorie have a nice trip big day huh no i wish we could slip away somewhere alone going to that party so do i shall we the others would never forgive me if you were there and i'd be blamed well wouldn't it be worth just a little blame i refuse to answer that what happened on that tv show no i don't know a press agent neil robeson tried to schedule me for an interview i turned him down hey my favorite dress i wore it to please myself not you mr easter oh just like i wore this tie to please me yeah it was embarrassing i'm waiting now for the agency or the sponsor to hit me over their head well i'm sorry mr duncan but bob got his signals crossed how about scheduling him for your next broadcast i'm sure i can produce him monday well the old man's great on football players of all american caliber and we've got to please him if we want to make a living okay go to work on it i'll count on him for monday [Music] duncan left the invitation open so let's work on bob and see if he makes monday's broadcast is there a reason bob doesn't want to be interviewed that's not the point the school would hardly want any of you fellas even the star of the squad snubbing e.b johnson right at this time yeah i see what you mean go to work on bob will you you've got a lot of influence on [Music] now nothing orders the fact that the old man is rich nothing alters the fact that he's a dictator and nothing alters the fact that he'll go into himself and snap his pocketbook closed if his feelings are hurt and bob does know all the details for the sake of the school you fellas ought to make bob see the light bob knows the facts that's for sure i think it's wonderful a man like mr johnson wants to help other people get an education especially considering he only went as far as the eighth grade himself did neil just talk to you somebody better get bob and huddle bob is okay all right we'll talk to him and we'll find out that he didn't know he was supposed to be on that television program maybe then maybe he did hi ken how about getting something started here i'd like to but not the sort of thing you're thinking about well somebody ought to it sure is dead hi cat thank you how are you hey can you get the party started bob well i can try how about a little something to loosen you up loosen up do i look muscle bones well everybody takes a nip now and then look fella i'm not everybody i'm just me and i don't drink period excuse me can uh no no thanks let's say marge yeah um first chance you have will you look me up oh it's about bob you know him better than the rest of us first chance you get you have a good time fine you yeah you bet what's bothering your mind some things the kids said i guess that television program is more important than we thought the kids kept asking if you knew there was a connection between it and an endowment for the school what'd you say that you didn't know thanks for having so much faith i wouldn't have mentioned it except i think you ought to know the kids are wondering about you but you're not well i do know about johnson and the endowment but marge if i hadn't turned down that interview i'd be just another guy falling in line with the propaganda that says drinking is part of american tradition all right if anybody says anything more i'll tell them just that bob you're serious yeah you know how i feel about drinking but being on a program advertising beer isn't drinking oh you are kidding aren't you the advertising is propaganda that links athletics family life and social fun with drinking where i stand that's wrong you're reading things into this that aren't there you go on i won't say it oh anyway by morning you'll see how wrong you are by morning and be the same fellow everybody looks to just like you always are you know something it's a good thing we're in love if we weren't i might think you were just stubborn oh don't let's quarrel it's not stubbornness i have a deep conviction i believe that drinking this isn't drinking it's being interviewed on a television program oh bob think things over as the rest of us see it i mean when i'll meet you after our first class monday not until monday huh good night [Music] oh glad to find you in bob just wanted to remind you this is monday good now i won't be going to tuesday's classes oh you're all set with duncan he's expecting you for the show look neil i still feel the same way bob let's look at the facts okay let's do i'm promoting a beer program why because i think beer is a good thing of course not beer is for the birds i do it to make a dollar that's the only reason anybody ever promotes this stuff to make a dollar now you don't like being on a show advertising beer but you're a big football hero and this is a chance for you to make a dollar neil no no no not just for yourself but for somebody else for an endowment that let kids go to your school kids who couldn't go otherwise why don't we promote dope maybe we could make a couple of dollars huh dope is illegal it's oh come on get off and bob dope dope isn't respectable but alcohol is huh alcohol has been made respectable by a lot of money by having a lot of guys who want to make a dollar think up slogans and take pictures of pretty girls right propaganda these people don't care about kids that grow up without having a chance not as long as they make their dollar well bob but i'm gonna tell you something neil right now straight i feel a responsibility for any influence i might have on others look i believe that god gave man the power to think into reason i won't go along with anything that befuddles our power to think and reason not even for a dollar you forgot one thing you talk about responsibility to others what about a man's responsibility to his school from now on bob you're the guy whose freak opinions cost your university a big endowment [Music] before we sign off a word of explanation if we can call it explanation rather it's an apology we had a promise that bob easton football star of west and you would be with us tonight he isn't here i don't know why and i apologize no more promises though bob is welcome here anytime he wants to come but we'll have to know he's other much until this came up we can't anymore well you're the biggest man on campus everybody who's heard of football has heard of you and bob you don't know how much all this means to me to us let's forget about me there's you i keep wondering what chance you'll have of getting a decent job if you're known as the guy that killed a big deal for his school partly but you're getting everybody against you even people who use liquor just at parties a drink or two so they can loosen up that's part of the line what line the line that people put out that promote liquor loosen them relax you're accusing me of parroting propaganda it's hard not to the propaganda's heavy it's all around i've done something you may not like i had to i think too much of you to let you just there's the guy that started this whole thing i asked him to meet us here you asking try to understand i did it for you all right marge bob oh sit down sit down am i welcome marge asked you well i wasn't sure after this morning mainly i want to apologize as i say i want to apologize bob if i'd known you felt so strongly about beer and liquor i never got you into this but i am that's right and talk has started i don't know well you can't blame the kids for figuring their own reasons why you didn't take the interview after all you didn't tell him you know no okay i can't blame you no one likes to be laughed at hold on hold it bob hold it this is this is your stand not mine don't blame me be sensible bob if you were in their place what would you think it's not what they think it's what i know and i believe i was sad as it seems the liquor interests have a way of building pressure but so is everything else and the liquor interests are big the best thing for a fellow to do is go along with it you can't beat him bob if you can't beat them join them no matter what you believe said it why fight a buzzsaw you know you can't win calum the beers advertising will be broadcast tomorrow whether you're on the program or not the only difference is if you do go on the old man will be pleased the school will get the endowment and respect for you goes up everybody's respect bob perhaps more than ever with those who are close to you we'll know you were big enough to admit you were wrong i'll talk to you tomorrow before football practice dormitory well now you're making sense if you can't beat him join him i'll see you tomorrow hey marge i'm sorry to bother you so late marge i saw pete duncan's television show tonight everybody did yeah i felt like going out and taking a couple of punches at that press agent neil what's his name oh but that doesn't do any good what bob needs now is somebody front for him to explain oh i just left bobcam so this is the pressure that we read about huh pressure that changes our lives and our ideas ken i just left bob we got him twisted things so that people will always believe that he cheated his school out man everything's going to be all right bob's going on duncan's show tomorrow i'm almost sure he is there's something sad about that isn't that i understand why he didn't go on the truth is he may be right you know he did seem to always have a better time than the guys who were drinking he claimed it was because he liked people liked to be with him to match wits i can bob isn't dead no no but it's sort of sad all the same the way that they got him [Music] [Music] so [Music] come in neil i've been thinking it over if you can't beat them joining us i thought you were on a business trip i heard a tv program last night i saw an item in the sports column of this morning's paper i thought maybe you needed somebody to talk to well where do we begin son i don't know many facts there's only one i turned out an offer to be interviewed at a television program because it had a beer sponsor as i came in i heard you quote somebody if you can't beat them join them well don't you think that perhaps you're making more of this than there really is son i didn't at first but you do now well it's only natural a lot of young people believe that drinking is an indispensable part of modern life why shouldn't they it's printed everywhere and not to believe what's printed or said stamps a person as an outsider very often that's why people go along with an idea out of fear fear being ridiculed as an outsider what happens to us if we go along that's beside the point why is it what about help what about our money six bits a shot for that stuff and i thought you joined them i thought you joined them believe me it's no crime to go against popular opinion sometimes it's a privilege but it is a crime to remain silent because silence gives the enemy a chance to call down the mob and the mob with its unreasoning mind can destroy you a man who believes has got to carry the ball for his beliefs not merely sit on the sidelines well got to get back but i'd like to have a bite of lunch first yeah sure stay there man i know who this is and won't take long perhaps be better if i met you at the restaurant all right but a couple of minutes hello bob how are you feeling this afternoon hey dad this is neil robertson this is my dad how are you neil glad to know you mr easton i'll see you in a few minutes bob well bob i'm glad to hear you feeling better i knew you would once you thought things over i uh i had a little talk with pete he said he'd do everything possible to clear up those rumors while interviewing you tonight everything you'll be clean once he's through i guess you know what it means to be an outsider now huh a man that was a gang cuts his own throat i guess you were right we have a little time huh well sure something you want to do first just name it and i'll help my only job is to make you comfortable to broadcast time yeah fine i have something i have to do and you might just about be alone well looks like the team's not here yeah yeah yeah a little i mean too it's a coach around oh he said he'd be a little late he had to see the dean oh ken uh when you get a chance there's something i'd like to take up with you yeah what's on your come mind [Music] [Applause] [Music] rob you settled something this promoter claims where'd he go well ran out on me again was that from him what's the matter hey coach did you see bob on the way in easton why should i have him he just turned in his uniform he's quit the team well i was with him for a half hour he didn't say anything to me all i know is what's in that nose yeah i thought something's going on you fellas got an idea what's behind this don't they teach you fellas to express yourself in english anymore nobody can tell what's going on his mind from this just a lot of gibberish about not wanting the school to lose out on counter him or maybe i know bob's got a guilt complex pete duncan announced that bob would be interviewed on pete's tv show and bob back down why because of some wacky personal dislike of liquor including beer he doesn't say that here well naturally not who'd want anybody to know they were an outsider uh would you fellows excuse yourselves for a minute please what's on your mind bob that was quite a shock to all of us i guess a shark oh yeah who'd ever guess he was that bullhead of the guy well i hadn't thought about it in quite that light well what other light is it well i considered him as a man who believed in something he believed in so strongly that he was willing to walk alone rather than compromise same thing it is all right it is but it's the bullheadedness of heroes the bullheadiness that makes a man stand against a whole mud slinging mob risk his future without surrendering principles oh now wait on that i know what your part has been i know what's been going on with my men whether you think so or not my part the contemplable actions of a contemplative man who rides along with money and power i don't have to listen to this try to walk away from me i'm not through with you you don't care very much about your job do you not if it depends on the influence of your kind well what did i do i'll tell you what you did you fell in line with the big lie techniques of the liquor interests you use their big lie techniques to make a boy believe you'd have to play your game or be ostracized i i don't get this big lie technique yes you do the billion dollar lie technique that says that alcohol is a natural part of social life buying and using talented men to do it buying and using newspaper opinion buying and using public opinion creating opinion by pressure and using men like you who pander to the power of the pressure by bringing in outside issues a boy's loyalty to his school his standing in the community his desire to do right things that have nothing whatsoever to do with whether he wants to believe or disbelieve the big lie you bring them in because they serve your own interests and the interest of the big lie and it doesn't matter at all if they destroy the boy and all his self-respect with him well now let me say something you even stooped to in wiggling the boy into making an appearance on a television program without the permission of the college i'd have gotten permission you couldn't you know you couldn't the school wouldn't give it for any reason and you'd left the boy to take the blame alone after it was over the point is the point is this a man bob or anyone else has a right to choose whether he wants to be bought by propaganda and he has a right to choose freely without fear [Music] if it's any comfort to your son the world depends on men who think and reason no no i was going to say that the pressure will not be so great after a while young people always want their friends to do what they think is the smart thing an older man a person like myself can say no thank you i don't use the stuff and his wishes are usually respected i can hold my own until then i hope through education through the church people are learning to stay away from the things that will hurt them not only for their own good but out of consideration for others and it's these men not the men of the mob mind who accomplish the good things they are the strong in spirit who think and reason yeah i know but i don't feel particularly strong right at this minute i think i'd like to get away for a while why don't you come home for a few days sit down you're against drinking well so am i but why keep it a secret don't you know if there weren't more decency than evil in the world you wouldn't have lived this long certainly you've never had a chance at college but there is decency and decency needs a voice that will call a team together now next time you get all tied up inside like this sound off the others that can't stand the pressure will come running you'll find you're far from alone practice tomorrow 3 35 coach what about the school the money from mr johnson i mean how hungry you think this place is you
