[music] [music] Good evening. Pope John Paul II continues his journey west tomorrow, arriving in California on the sixth day of his visit to the US. Tonight, however, it was a mass for the masses in Arizona. inside a football stadium. Carlos Aesqua was in Tempee for the mass and has this report on the Pope's day. [music] These are the faces of anticipation. Faces which Pope John Paul II calls the flock of the Roman Catholic Church. [music] They are white and black, brown and yellow, each with their own reason for being here. Then the moment arrived, the Pontiff appeared in the Pope mobile. It was a rush of emotions. >> [music] >> For this pontiff, this holy father, this is a celebration of Jesus Christ. For the 80,000 who filled [music] this stadium, this is an experience of a lifetime. >> Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. >> This was a day that saw the pontiff hold young sick babies in his arms and bless them. A day when the crowds cheered stolat Polish for may you live a 100 years. >> Not so easy to to live stolat 100 years in this in this earth. But if if it can be possible only possible through true love. >> A parade down Central Avenue. his familiar papal wave to the crowd. From the balcony of St. Mary's Basilica, a call for brotherhood in both English and Spanish. Native Americans whose ancestors embraced Catholicism 300 years ago celebrated their heritage with a man who has tremendous appeal among all he meets. The world is indeed his place of worship, and on this day, he chose to embrace a place the Navajos call the Valley of the Sun. with the Pope in Arizona. Carlos Amsqua, News Center [music] tonight. >> Now, the Pope will stay at a cathedral in the not so nice part of LA during his stay, partly in his continuing efforts to show his concern for the poor and the homeless. But the irony of it all is that many of the homeless have been roused from the Skidro area around St. Vivianos, and the Union Rescue Mission next door has been closed. All to make sure terrorists cannot pose as homeless and get near the Pope. News Center 39 will continue live coverage of the Pope's journey west tomorrow at 5 and 11. San Diego City Council has another vacancy tonight. The fourth district seat is now empty. Councilman William Jones resigned today. As we told you in an exclusive report last week, Jones already is on the East Coast attending Harvard Business School and critics said he was neglecting his duties here. Voters will choose a new fourth district council member in November. Jones's staff will stay on to handle district business and help with the transition after the election. Meanwhile, Mayor Moren O' Conor says she will monitor problems in the fourth district. Until that happens, the state attorney general's office will have to decide whether to try a deputy
