Description: Introduces the properties and applications of electromagnets through demonstrations of the magnetic field surrounding a conductor and describes their applications in telephones, bells, and motors. Illustrates the equivalence of fields produced by electromagnets and bar magnets by viewing the field patterns formed with iron filings and emphasizes the transience of the electromagnetic field. Shows that an electromagnetic field can be increased by wrapping the coil around a soft iron core or by increasing the current flow or number of turns of the coil.
