Description: Theodor Fontane's 19th century novel, Effi Briest is analogous to Madame Bovary in France. Fassbinder's adaptation manipulates the novel's structure to present a modern re-analysis in terms of the rise of fascism and the oppression of women. The main character a vivacious mixture of anti-conformity and mediocrity is married to a Prussian diplomat several years her senior.
