This 23-minute compilation of Edison Company newsreels documents the April 1906 San Francisco earthquake and its immediate aftermath. Sampled frames (retrieved via YouTube thumbnails due to streaming difficulties) reveal the range of footage: one frame shows a block of collapsed and partially standing structures with rubble heaped in the street and a smoky, hazy sky — the direct destruction of the quake and fires. Another frame captures a packed outdoor market street scene, crowds of pedestrians in Edwardian dress moving past improvised storefronts, one bearing a "CENTRAL AVE. MARKET" banner, suggesting the rapid emergence of relief commerce. A third frame sweeps down a wide San Francisco boulevard flanked by tall commercial buildings, with horse-drawn wagons and scattered pedestrians — city life pressing on amid devastation. Together the reels form an invaluable early newsfilm record of one of America's most catastrophic natural disasters.
