Description: Richard Hollingshead invented the drive-in movie theater in 1933 as an innovative diversion for Depression-era audiences. Today, most of the open-air screens have been replaced by multiplex theaters. In this nostalgic documentary portrait, proprietors of the few remaining drive-ins recall the theaters' heyday, their part in American popular culture and the myriad technological developments that once enhanced the outdoor viewing experience. Their reminiscences are accompanied by promotional drive-in film trailers and cartoons advertising not only exciting coming attractions but such drive-in amenities as insect repellent, snacks and bargain or theme nights.
