DISORIENTATION CRASHES

[Music] there goes full panel morton regardless of visibility he's relaxed completely confident but he wasn't always that way he had a few experiences with this orientation before he earned the tag full panel the first time morton became disoriented he was about nine years old it was then he learned that when he lost visual contact he had to rely on other senses the sense of balance and the sense of feel which he found weren't too dependable a few years later it happened again he was sure he was headed straight for camp but his senses tricked him they failed to tell him his direction was changing it took the scoutmaster to give him the word whenever you lose visual contact morton go on instruments this made an impression on young morton that lasted a long time but not long enough mort became disoriented again on one of his night fights [Music] here we go sure is black tonight there go the border lights boy they're really thinning out now last time there were stars before that a full moon but tonight nothing hmm better get those wheels up now check that attitude ah there's my section leader must be okay [Music] but his last experience with this orientation was abused [Applause] [Music] better check my attitude on the little old gyro horizon to see where i am ah attitude normal here i am just keep cool more relax boy looks like another oops now steady just a little rough there nothing serious maybe climbing a better check little gyro [Music] down [Music] but i still feel that pull coming back swooping out of this stuff in a minute [Applause] disorientation crashes occur almost daily many of them are fatal but mort was lucky and he knew it so he burned up on a few things spent a lot of extra time in the link and in the air and telling everyone else about it not to change the subject fellas but whenever you find yourself flying into an area of reduced visibility go on instruments right away even before you lose your natural horizon if you're taking off go on and before your airborne and i don't mean one instrument i mean all of them and don't try to fly half contact in half instrument or you will get confused when you go on instruments stay on them if you can learn to visualize your attitude through your instruments you can fly in any weather or conditions of visibility fly full panel sit back and relax and you won't have a thing to worry about and neither will anyone else you
