Design Wars

Documents the design and construction of Chicago's new Harold Washington Library Center, the largest municipal library in the country. Focuses on how the five finalists balanced external constraints (budget, construction time allowances, physical location) and their own personal values and design challenges to create functional yet aesthetic architectural plans. Looks at how the architects strove to resolve the conflicts inherent in the design process--the tensions between building a functional library, creating a safe and appealing space, and making a statement about Chicago's future. Closed Captioned.
