Description: Examines the role music plays in important life events in Africa and illustrates its use in African storytelling. Features musicologist Andrew Tracy and a group of African musicians who introduce the twelve-beat rhythms at the core of the music and demonstrate how each sounds alone, in combinations, and in "crossed rhythms." Continues as Tracy tells a group of children a folktale about how a man and a rabbit enchant a lion with music to keep the lion from attacking the man's wife. Observes how the storytelling invites audience participation as the children chant and clap.
