Description: Discusses DeVries' study of the evening primrose particularly in view of how its hereditary behavior differs from that of peas. Shows how the exceptional breeding behavior of Oenothera became understood through (1) Renner's work identifying gene complexes and balanced lethals, (2) Cleland's studies of Oenothera cytology, (3) Cleland-Renner-Odhlker's cytogenetic study of race hybrids, and (4) work stimulated by Bellings' discovery of circle formation by chromosomes in heterozygotes for reciprocal translocations. Indicates ways in which the unusual cytogenetic behavior of Oenothera provides an outstanding test of the validity of the chromosome theory of inheritance. Lecture given by Dr. R. E. Cleland.
