Cyprus to Florence, Italy by Philip H. Elwood, 1930

Description: Iowa State College landscape architecture professor Philip H. Elwood took students on a tour in the summer of 1930. This videodisc covers highlights of the Italy, Turkey, Cyprus, and Greece portions of that trip. Features a tour of Villa d'Este outside Rome and views of the Allee of 100 Fountains, Water Organ Fountain, unfinished casino at the end of the main axis, the Dragon Fountain, Lily Fountain, and views of the distant hills. Gives a view of the port of Limassal on the island of Cyprus where the SS Brasile is anchored. Highlights in Turkey include the Mosque St. Sophia in Constantinople (Istanbul), the harbor, new Royal Palace, area near Roberts College, another mosque, and ancient fortifications along the Bosphorus. Give glimpses of Trotsky's burned home on the island of Prinkipe. Features of Athens include Temple of Jupiter (Zeus), view of the city from the Acropolis, looking down on the Amphitheater, examining the Parthenon with the restored north elevation, porch of Caryatide, and modern buildings and grounds in Athens designed in a classic style. In Naples, Italy, show a view of Mt. Vesuvius. Highlights of Rome include Farnese Palace gardens, Palatine Hill, Borghese gardens, and Villa Torlonia, Villa Gamberaia at Settignano near Florence, Villa Turri-Salviati, and Villa Palmieri.
