Description: Explores the growth and spread of violence in the schools by presenting case studies of the problem as it exists in school districts throughout the country. Interviews with students, teachers, and administrators confirm that fear in both students and teachers leads to less learning, lower job satisfaction, and higher dropout and burnout rates. Identifies security systems, codes of conduct, actively concerned administrations, and no overcrowded classrooms as corrective measures that appear to be working effectively in some schools where crime is dropping.
