Ed works in a highly demanding position in the NASA program at the age of thirty-one. The film follows some aspects of his life and career. It shows the preparation for a space probe launching highlighting the intricate work involved and pressures experienced by employees of the NASA program. An on-staff doctor notices negative symptoms of ED's smoking habit. thing of beauty rewarding music to the ears of men and women who have worked for it a time to celebrate that is if you feel up to it fine countdown when the clock is running out and men have time for I'm fine doc I'm fine I just feel a little run down lately this cough of yours nothing well it could be something and when did it come on oh five or 6 weeks ago doc when the bug was going around the bug disappeared but the cough remained well it's going away my problem if I have one is just tension this last shoot it's been a strain now we had oxygen leaks security wiring even had a mouse and a packs a day I'll bet huh yeah something like that mhm okay take a deep [Music] breath dark Rumblings no it's just a small localized wheezing but let's have a picture huh let you say Doc right over there Ed this won't take wait a minute how's Nancy these days oh she's fine I wish I could say the same but her golf game that's good fine all right allegion Dr Emerson mhm will you please mail us right now ahead of him right do well have I got time to write a will oh that and then some I'm sure but that doesn't mean that I'm giving you a complete bill of health what do you mean well I mean that you're flying to NASA headquarters in Houston first thing in the morning for a complete physical checkup you're kidding I'm sorry Ed we can't afford to let men like you ignore something that just might develop into something serious well now don't pull your bedside manner on me what have I got doc you Engineers are all alike aren't you you just have to have the answer well I'll tell you you've got an abnormal spot the size of a nickel on your lung now it could be Scar Tissue a node a localized swelling due to some chronic irritant any number of things at any rate we'll find out exactly what you Medics didn't bring this uh all the way here just to talk about golf handicaps we're hoping we're praying but the questionable spot on your lung is uh simply Nature's defense against some foreign irritant such as that noxious agent you have in your mouth Dr Emerson advises me that you're a chain smoker really no three taxs a day I don't inhale half of them and most of them I don't smoke you know that they just sit there and burn away along with our furniture well look if it's such a nasty costly habit why don't you stop I said I would anytime you would please please I'm not trying to trigger a divorce I can't understand why in the face of all the research the findings the indisputable conclusions you young people would want to swap your health and vitality for what at the very best is a thoroughly unnourished habit forming fire hazard head let me see a pack of your cigarettes you ask if they're dangerous why do you suppose your government has required that this be printed on every package sold caution cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health no wonder it's in little print do you have any idea what the solution is that's the amount of nicotine that will pass through the body of anyone who smokes one package of cigarettes a day yearly or take this distillate tobacco from the same number of cigarettes refu acids hydrocarbons cancer causing tars paint the solution on the skin of healthy mice and they will develop cancer what happens when we paint the raw insides of our lungs with it it has been calculated that each cigarette smoked shortens one's life 14 and 1 12 minutes let me have your cigarette Ed I have something else to show you I want you to see what happens from the use of just one cigarette watch carefully the col of a little plastic bag Mr and Mrs Adams take a good close look at these deposits from just one cigarette the Surgeon General of the United States has estimated that 300,000 people die unnecessarily each year as a result of smoking some authorities are predicting that by 1975 34 of a million people will die annually if smoking Trends continue Dr are you assuming that I'm here because of smoking I'll answer that question after the tests this won't hurt very much just be like a mosquito bite sure dog see that wasn't bad was it yeah Edward Adams Space Age engineer experiencing a countdown he never trained for 5 4 3 2 1 will it be green for gold or self-destruct now we're hoping this Legion hasn't spread and isn't involving the blood vessels in the higher area or the lymph no and will be localized in this particular area the medical date as it comes in is not [Music] reassuring a broncoscopy is required the bronchoscope is an inst strument for looking down into the lungs is the big question mark on Edward Adam's right lung merely a sore spot or is it a tumor if so is it benign or is it malignant well if you have to do it I I guess you have to do it that's right the section of tissue is removed a biopsy being required pathology will provide the answer in a matter of hours in the meanwhile Edward Adams is left in suspense we won't have an answer on your test until sometime late this afternoon so why don't you enjoy yourselves I've got a couple of tickets to the Astrodome I've never been to the Astrodome well that's very nice thank you Doctor should be quite a game doctor suppose the results are to smoke it's surgery you have carcinoma cancer of the right lung how extensive we won't know until we've opened your chest if the legion is confined if it hasn't metastasized that is to say spread we may have to remove only a small portion of your lung on the other hand if it is spread into the surrounding tissue we may have to remove the entire lung what about my other lung well from what our tests have shown us so far it seems to be clear but in the case of cancer we can't be certain until we see for ourselves I realize how deeply disturbing it is for you to hear this but try not to be too depressed we've performed hundreds of these operations and some of our patients go on to lead productive lives some of the physical activity of course might of necessity have to be restricted but tissue tissue drastically weakened by the inhibitive effects of tobacco [Music] the diseased lung the hardened area is the primary lesion of cancer has it spread throughout the lung will Edward Adams get off with a minimal loss of tissue or will he lose the entire lung Edward Adams is fortunate he is going to lose only a lobe a small portion of his right lung there it is a part of the life preserving breathing apparatus nature gives to [Music] man there it is lost what about the the lung has it also become diseased it's been beaten and badgered by tobacco smoke for the same period of time a normal healthy lung of a nonsmoker the section of lung just taken out of Edward Adams the discoloration is due to hydrocarbons and [Music] tars the tough leathery condition of the tissue results from the deposit of these un welcome substances and the ensuing collapse of healthy cells in reaction to them [Music] [Music] [Applause] hello Mrs Adams how is he I'd say you're a very fortunate woman fortunate your husband lost only a portion of his loan but you like the facts and I'll give them to you I wouldn't have guaranteed saving any of his loan and how long you have him with you depends largely on him no more smoking you're going to be the boss now if he hasn't been sobered by this ordeal if he doesn't listen then he really doesn't want to live and he's just committing suicide I offer this advice for young women as well nature is much kinder to man than man is to himself head now depends on God's help along with sensible well regulated living your husband may be
