Chickadee Chuckwagon

brother and i always like to go out to uncle size farm in the winter it's a really neat place to go the first thing we see are little tracks in the fresh snow and then we see the birds that made them the red poles have come back from the north and the beautiful wax wings are eating all the berries on the mountain ash trees i think they're the prettiest birds we get here in the winter but the most fun is watching the chickadee chuckwagon gee it looks like the chuck wagon is almost empty but aunt mary knows how to fix that she melts some fat and then she mixes in rolled oats and bread crumbs at last she gives it to me to take outside my brother likes to play with the sunflower seeds he likes to feel them trickling through his fingers aunt mary says many birds really like sunflower seeds sometimes the ladder is nearly buried in the deep snow but i can climb up then i push the soft chuck into the hole in the stump the chickadee is in as quick as a wink now brian puts out the sunflower street and the chickadee is first again boy they must have sharp eyes it's neat the way he holds the seat between his toes the evening grow streaks always make straight for the sunflower seeds i like the bright colors of the males they have the same colors as my hockey shirt yellow black and white the chickadees are always hungry especially on cold days that's when they start fighting to see who gets the most this one seems to be the boss the others will have to wait till he's finished i guess so look at the beak on that close peak that's big they must have sharp edges to open seeds as easily as that i wonder who's going to win this contest the harry wood picker or the blue jay old harry wins and the prize is a free lunch i used to wonder why the woodpecker's tail was so stiff it helps him to hang onto the tree when he's eating uh-oh the red poles are back again my brother better hurry up and get out some more weed seeds they're looking for a dessert the boys are more brightly colored than the girls these boys even get to wear a pink waistcoat that's a whiskey jack i remember him he stole my toast when i was camping and right off the table too i'm going to put some chuck out in this old onion bag and see what happens well sure that's what happens you can't fool a chickadee he just knows when there's food around and it doesn't matter where you put it the male thinks it's his turn to eat gosh he missed his turn this is a female donnie i wonder where she came from she likes her fat and rolled oats too she sure looks funny hanging upside down like that [Music] there's the blue jay again [Music] still hungry this is a white breasted nut hatch gee you never know who's gonna turn up next that blue jay should take a few lessons from the woodpecker then he'd know how to hang on with his tale [Music] maybe this one did take a few lessons that's much better i like to try putting the chocolate way up here then we can see who finds it guess who found it chickadee chuckwagon strikes again the fellow in the brown suit is the house barrel and here comes his girlfriend here comes a magpie i just love to watch them fly [Laughter] maybe they are the most handsome winter birds we have i always forget how beautiful they are here's old harry woodpecker again you can tell him by his long beak [Music] looks just like him but he's smaller and his beak is shorter and sharper that's the female harry she doesn't have the red patch on her head here's a styling we didn't have them last year gee look at his sharp yellow beak here comes the clown the red breasted nut hatch my brother calls him the red-pressed ignite case i guess it's because of the way he walks down trees now you know what he's called the upside down bird it's time for brian to put out some more sunflower seeds for the gross beaks me [Music] [Applause] i sure wish i could fly like that i'd fly right up to the mountain of the moon and wink at him then i come right back down and land as easy as pie i don't know if this swing idea is going to work but chickadee will try anything for raw dogs and fat so will the red breasted nutcase i mean red breasted not hatch i bet all the boys and girls in the world would like to put out feeders for the birds in the wintertime it's really fun to see who will turn up for lunch you might get different birds where you live maybe when they get used to you they will eat right out of your hand the chickadees will for sure try not to laugh when they tickle you with their toes they might fly away again [Music] [Music] ddd you
