Describes the work of the British to prepare Nigeria for independence. Show the increasing mechanization of coal and tin mines; the improvement of rail transportation; the development of village industries, using local resources; the control of erosion; and the battle against disease. Also discusses the mass literacy campaign and the establishment of regional and national assemblies to give experience in democratic government.
