Central America: Nicaragua

Year Published: 1987

Complete Record: Twelve-year-old Oswaldo Gaitan lives in Nicaragua, a country often in the news. Families of the World: Central America portrays the everyday life of Oswaldo, his family, and his friends. Their home, the city of Masaya, is the handicraft center of the country. Oswaldo’s father is a shoemaker; his mother is a seamstress. Even though both parents work, the Gaitan family, like most Central Americans, struggles to make ends meet. Their lack of material comforts is partly offset by the year-round pleasant climate, which encourages outdoor activities.
