Description: Betty Carter, legendary jazz vocalist, is filmed performing at the Howard University Fine Arts Festival where friend and mentor Lionel Hampton joins her briefly on the piano. Backstage and at home, Carter describes her musical inspirations, her work with Ray Charles and Lionel Hampton and her fervent desire that black music be taught as part of the educational curriculum. Uncompromised by commercialism, Carter founded her own record company while raising two sons as a single parent.
