[Music] [Music] adventure was motion picture camera and airplane that was the life of Martin Johnson who flew and filmed with his white folks he was a pioneer of motion pictures and aircraft in exploration in the study of remote places he preferred to make his record for the screen in traversing desert and jungle he prefers the sky road Martin Johnson was the popular naturalist in Africa with OSA he made a memorable series of adventure and wild animal pictures before that in their early exploring days they had been in Borneo which had left an abiding memory so 18 years later they returned with camera and claim for the Isle of the impossible their culminating adventure and culminating pictures and their last they came home to bitter ironic fatality Martin said he always felt safer in the wild when in civilized places just after arranging the production of this picture he enosis is an airliner to California it crashed Martin kills Olson injures he pioneered an exploration with plane and film he perished in a plane at home and left behind this his greatest film Borneo [Music] geography dictated their first exploit from Singapore the crossroads of the world their destination walks the other side of Borneo across the China Sea then it costs the giant savage island by the sky loose in that plane they flew on many a great adventure in their African years now it is to be the spirit of Africa linking across Borneo [Music] mosa spies the island of the lepers were victims of the dread malady are segregated and kept apart now they have crossed the China scene but that was the lease of this flood because it was swings across Borneo that island of primitive ferocity which gave its name to the traditional wild men legendary with the terror of Dayak pirates a jungle land of headhunters no such flight had ever been made before so perilous the British authorities said no and at first refused a permit Borneo is divided between the British and the Dutch there's Sun ducking capital of British North Borneo the only colony governed by a chartered company they were not looking for town so on over the jungle teeming with a fantastic life that makes this the Isle of Man incredible the kilobyte Angoon rivers that's their adventure trail far up the stream they will find the darkest death so follow the killer tank it's a stem wine it winds all over the place the rivers in Borneo are like that meandering almost in circles [Music] looks like a lawn carefully mow but those trees tower 200 feet high giant walls of equatorial fully the destination of this expedition is the deepest and darkest jungle of all a remote place the maximum of wilderness [Music] waterways are about the only wages they could get anywhere in this world of towering thickets the rivers likewise are the only landing field and pilot Jim plenary had better be skillful here where the flying fields are jungle stream the river dwellers here are the lured our alpha male a race see roving comprar here in the interior are the older and more primitive fire headhunters they used to be and maybe still off also finding their way but a stroke of luck Martin finds one of the morose who has been the sundeck and among the English man oh I'm alright how are you when you learned there from the white people huh how'd you like to go along with me as interpreter huh you like to go with you yeah what's your name okay well good night how much money you want all right I think [Music] expedition headquarters is to beat deep in the jungle so push on snakes flying space serpents on wane this island of the unimaginable abounds in reptiles they're weird fascinating they're poisonous not so fascinating and they fly [Music] the murrow's have told Martin about a place of bounding with strange equatorial lights look out to the equatorial night there's some of it OSHA's brave not afraid of a mouse but that's no mouse blowgun a native weapon poison arrow what's that ain't jaw transfixed by the dark tip with best the Merle marksman knows the poison is doing its deadly work they cut their way for hours to the haunted jungle night that the natives have [ __ ] up so highly what do you think about this place well I think I'll be off the pretty ones cleared this is your fan base I'll open you go tell a boy should come around again cut all this down huh well cut two of the edges and make a fine cam here get all their knives Batangas get them here one guitar you go in we look around while you're going over that arena look over there haunt of jungle life is right River monkey here there to establish their home a laboratory for the popular naturally the tropical green abounds through the creatures of the wild the rare poorni oh dear here they'll make their headquarters and filled with infinite cunning and care shy weary beats like this and curious bird like the white heron [Music] osa homebuilder as well as explorer knows that this is to be their household for long months to come the Borneo jungle is hot humid rainy insect ridden and teeming with reptiles [Music] [Applause] some of the Borneo tribes are rated the laziest people on earth work of any kind pours them to tears their principal activity is both a cockfight he and gamblers in the bad old days they were known to West venue ously energetic while headhunters they're not so handy at handicraft it isn't the camera that makes the slow motion it's just busy Borneo and that's not handicraft its footwork fingers so lazy they let the toes do it [Music] as a headhunter he's a footwork the heights of activity and nap in the afternoon they believe that work is for the dogs [Music] they built a raft out of rattan bamboo jungle wood the forest abounds with valuable timber some of the hardest owners like iron wood and the murrow's are skilled in water trash borne Rivermen great big father goes to hold this down solid [Music] so this is headquarters for the martin johnson expedition bit of america in the equatorial forest a sturdy bungalow with the town group and a sturdy finished grass borneo split by the equator a land of immense tropical rainfall it has no wet or dry season only wet [Music] - the moral matey's this Johnson jungle home is a place of endless wonders home of white man's magic they come here for reasons of sorcery and they take Martin for a medicine man hey gun put that coming [Music] [Music] [Music] are we gonna get it [Music] dentist do come to these parks this one is journeyed up from time doctor so he has a sign in English and Chinese the Chinese go everywhere they penetrate into the remotest wilds of the East Indies flying their tracks including tooth clothes they are known to put a gold cap on any native tooth whether it needs one or not here's dentistry that makes us dance and now you will see what makes the wild man of Borneo wild [Music] [Music] OSHA has been out exploring on her own and she's caught a fish I wonder if she found this site is as wonderful as the native said it was is it really such an abounding part of the wild animal life of the tropical forest are there strange birds and beats here are there monkeys Jose yells yes a house full of monkeys and out she chases the monkey monkeys and monkeys [Music] even a lady Explorer becomes just an indignant housewife when she finds her front parlor full of monkeys OSHA is incensed she chases them in wild confusion on your way Monkman don't you stop well there's no stopping them they think OSes still after them [Music] [Music] these are River monkeys agile s jumping and West they are equally at home in the treetops and in the river they shine at high jump they shine at swimming monkey charge [Music] as high divers they're not particular either they don't need water at the other end of the jump dry land or hard rock will do just as well they dive into a cement pool before the water was let in and lucky scientists say that there is some element of flying in this a gliding suggestion of the flying squirrel they use their tails for balancing the tail swinging around suggesting a gyroscope they seem to spread their bodies with some sort of gliding effect if you don't believe it you try high diving onto the hard earth Saburo leads the way to a waterhole [Music] well I'm going to look around in the jungle - I think there's other places probably on the five skin rocks will Yahoo ah given smallest anthropoid is the only one whose nose has a break and a bronzy also a baby or rank and then a red monkey yes this campsite seems to be okay right a hundred percent for filming animal life and Borneo has owls weisburd something like our own and some the like of which you've never seen before here's old sourpuss a regular borneo screws [Music] gus-gus is a cute little cut a lemur with wide eyes and little vacuum cuts on his feet suckers he can walk right up a plate of black and here's the way you have to drink in Borneo water is dangerous to drink as the old joke says rivers mountain streams or even Crystal Springs here may be contaminated but the water is pure in the water vine the stem has a vein at the most this water hole is a treasure ground for the popular naturally honey bears with six birth protection from the stings of the jungle beans the Brock monkey Borneo is a dominant punk for the primates from the tiny simian to the great ape and to the waterhole some wild take the attraction here is not only water but also salt both the waterhole and a salt lake surely an ideal location for the camera blind wherefrom camouflage the telescope lens can study wildlife the borneo civet cats the largest coast relation of the common domestic feline twice as big as the american house cat a playground for jungle life and the drug company is renowned as the most faithful of its kind to him the civet cat is just kitty kitty [Music] the spectacled monkey another odd fellow in this monkey paradise [Music] [Music] mr. and mrs. Gibbon always drink like that even in a zoo with all civilized conveniences he gets the habit from life in the treetops where a finger drinking gathers the rainwater on the Foley [Music] those two quaint chaps are not borneo monkeys at all they're from sumatra and how did they get here well the expedition brought them along as if there were not enough monkeys in Borneo but that type is especially interesting because of its extraordinary voice [Music] that fellow is a CMA not a monkey at all really he's an amplifier Burton the extraordinary thing about si Lang is the huge couch that he has under his jaws like great flabby jaws that's part of his vocal equipment filled with air the pouch can produce a total of its own and of jewelry to the low mass when the see a man wants to do some special singing the jungle Caruso stuck with an equatorial love song you can punch these powers to project an added tone deer can't stretch his ear but a co mang is great at picking out too [Music] this part of the jungle creature is like an animal man dream come true [Music] but dreams come more than true in Borneo this thing was brought into camp by the natives who got it from far far up the river just a baby a dream come doubly triply true for bosses monkeys rarest of the rare and they're being fed the unaccustomed way with infinite patience also keeps them alive no proboscis monkey has ever been kept alive in any civilized zoo far away in the depths of the jungle way upstream there they say is a whole colony of those rarest of Finian's the whole town of proboscis already while OSA feeds the babies preparations are being made for a proboscis honks [Music] a Chinese junk is pressed into service for the river voyage from here on off on a scouting tour pilot Jim Lanier has been making an air survey at the upper reaches of the stream putting the plane away Jim reports forbidding wilderness stupendous jungle and the river just a winding maze of treacherous back waters he doesn't know if the boat can possibly get through never mind the peril here we go we're on our way off by junk and by arrest how could you hold Martin Johnson back when there are proboscis monkeys to detail [Applause] Merl Rivermen are great fabulous slender built marvelous on endurance and stamina family life on a junk has ups the river we pass native houses on stilts on stilts to be safe from reptiles and safe from flood the women more than do their share out here in Borneo and as for these Chinese junks will they penetrate everywhere [Music] jungle is growing more dense now second only go in the quest for the proboscis monkeys deep in these forests leg [Music] Martin make sure he's cameras in good shape returns the compliment checking up on her own camera by shooting one of Martin [Music] we're in a dark backwash of the Borneo River now you have to explore then so it's PI Berlin song - Kim / Kangin Pokemon song [Music] one reason why the proboscis monkey is so rare is because it feeds exclusively on the shoots of young palm along the riverbanks beneath upon now what do we see dense growth of Nico pause so we're nearing our goal it won't be long until we're in proboscis ville go up the river and travel on boys now we need a science we need a zoology so life presents that eminent naturalist professor liu lair thank you it's a pleasure so little is known about the purposes of family that nobody can check up on I speak freely in this we're community of dweeble positive family life is very women little junior who schnozzle is yet only a nozzle claimed squeezed like a monkey while mama made a dainty lady sized Beezer they also spring salad lunch to all the little holes noses outside of using them for sneezing snoring and sniveling no other reason has ever been found for a super colossal shmeller so 20 family of people buzzes family is very heavy eaters it takes a lot of jungle order to wear them our notice the perfect rhythm of their shoes how to know each time that a master key messy human beings always connect noses but being curious equals eight oh but these Borneo scoop noses is very exclusive that a push like Dell you wouldn't be a good mixer either he's a tough Asian festival remember but you don't know where to put on everything ain't always hunky Julie Matt a preposterous family they're like any other married people so far you ain't into Papa here he's late for dinner again this way mama is always looking around all these twin Papa's home to protect oh hey grandpa [Music] you got a flat his hobby in home yet he must be out meta poised again tweak and dongju's yep he sees them on the front step blaster look at that Wow he just took his nose in the logic they filled it up and you ashamed to squeeze in the family I hope you get hay fever yeah mama that's him hide the children he's coming out of it no he ain't sick he's just got the nose get er new coward Twitter's if they hiccups it was knock his teeth out boy is he in the doghouse she's not mad she wouldn't care and pop stopped him in the nose and I wouldn't give when pop any credit to be missus look now he's got the DTS he sees little pink men running around tomorrow he'll say it was something he ate no doubt when Papa's fury in Queens that monkey's met noses like Graham pop smell just the same as other monkey's [Music] everybody knows that monkeys don't have fleas everybody but a monkey is so little Ludwig gets his once-over life as the family ignores the house completely Oh grandpa he never forgets he's got a mind like an elephant and a nose pretty near even that the world's sweetest sinus still don't know but at a monkey's Grote's noses or these noses grow damn punkin [Music] look now so little Randy is to add a touch attachment so Tom Jews Jake comes out of it empties the icebox on wonders what the chances is to go back to the family let me tell me what a hangover but even as you and us is still in the doghouse she won't talk so what so he goes back to the lodge for more palm juice [Music] I guess we don't need the professor now Boren Keating would be a teller of tales of fantastic terror from this point on the martin johnson expedition is bound for the headhunter country [Music] this type of matey boat is called a go bomb essentially a dugout primitive but well adapted to navigating the streams and shallows of the Borneo jungle [Music] for Niall water turkey the endless walls of jungle unfold the equatorial forest of Palms and Ironwood and equally hard the timber Sioux bamboo and rattan and the spreading banyan tree all dominated by the towering tea pang tree monarch of the jump [Music] Martin and those says call this the most beautiful scenery they had ever beheld [Music] Beauty yes and fantastic here in this aisle of the unsalables nature played some of her weirdest pranks we're approaching one now and Frank is right a freak of nature explorers the fold of the three climbing fish they described these creatures of paradox and it all sounded like a traveler's fable but here they are actually filmed what is the scientific explanation tell us professor thank you miss tweak Lyman fish science is stumped the only time I saw things like these before was after a couple of bottles of schnapps only the ones I saw you could make this a pyramid aspirin tablet is they're real fish - and not exaggerated tadpoles or lizards these are precisely the same order of life as trout swordfish or sea bass they've become adapted to the conditions of the Borneo jungle sudden flood pools the swiftly dry out fish left stranded on land Nature has adapted them to that and as the shore is a tangle of trees branches and roots the fish have got used to the trees this is a living example of the probable way that terrestrial beings came into existence on this planet the swarming life of the ocean tweeting out on the land fish accommodating themselves to life out of the water you can imagine how in an eon of time these paradoxical creatures may lose the way of the water altogether and develop into creatures of the land and sure enough they actually climb into the lower branches of the trees so they are tree climbing fish they're a tall story come true but then so is all Borneo [Music] and now along with the journey to the headhunters deeper into the jungle like a dank cavern some gloomy river of the nether world in Dante's Inferno here we find no light fantastic mood of free climbing face [Music]
