BLUEPRINT FOR TOMORROW

in 1885 the University of Arizona was founded as a land-grant institution under the Morrill Act in a desert area on the outskirts of Tucson since then the University of Arizona has grown to be the largest and most complete university in this region among universities located in desert areas it is one of the largest and most complete in the world for a thousand years or more in Europe and America the tradition of the University has been to impart to each generation the accumulated knowledge and wisdom of the past and to seek through research new knowledge for the benefit of all men today here on the University of Arizona campus students and faculty are looking beyond the traditional bounds in their search for new knowledge to the skies to outer space where man may someday live and to the smallest particle we know to the very heart the inside of the atom this then teaching research and service is our blueprint for tomorrow the objectives of the university teaching research and service are interlocking the undergraduate student learns the discipline that serves either to launch him in a career or provide the starting point for further education and new knowledge gained through research benefits directly the public the university programs are conducted by an able and dedicated faculty of more than 1,500 members bringing to Arizona the learning and traditions of the great universities of this country Europe and Asia the campus of the University of Arizona is a desert island unique for its subtropical landscaping which includes trees and shrubs from many parts of the world it blends the beauty and traditions of Old Mexico a land to be found just sixty-five miles to the south just 10 miles from the campus is the mission of San aver del bar founded before the American Revolution a reminder that Arizona was Spanish territory for 300 years the surrounding lush desert his world famous for its magnificent stands of saguaro cacti while immediately north of Tucson are the Santa Catalina Mountains rising to 9000 feet and providing beautiful pine forests for year-round recreation the instructional program at the University of Arizona includes 13 colleges one is the College of Agriculture a part of the world-famous system of land-grant colleges and universities it offers specialization in more than 20 departments the faculty members of this college are actively engaged in teaching but in addition like most other divisions of the university they conduct research projects of vital importance to the agricultural interests of Arizona and of the nation the College of Business and public administration offers specialization in all major fields of Business Administration economics and finance the College of Education offers preparation for teaching careers and administration of our schools music drama art and speech are all taught in the College of Fine Arts the drama department utilizes one of the finest university theaters in the nation and in the university art gallery there are two priceless art collections from the Samuel H crest foundation which permit students to study five centuries of European painting [Music] programs in nine fields are offered in the college of engineering at the University of Arizona well-known for its outstanding graduates the College of Engineering offers the bachelors degree in five specific fields as well as in engineering mathematics and engineering physics Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees are granted in all standard fields as well as in nuclear engineering and aerospace engineering recently added to the campus a new civil engineering building the College of Mines offers degrees in several fields mining metallurgical geological and chemical engineering as well as geology minerals engineering and hydrology professional education for more than half of the practicing attorneys of Arizona has been provided here by the College of Law in 1967 the College of Pharmacy moved into these new quarters giving it outstanding teaching and laboratory facilities the College of Liberal Arts with the largest college enrollment offers specialisation in such fields as English and journalism mathematics history philosophy and foreign languages and in the physical biological and social sciences [Music] in the fall of 1967 the ultra-modern College of Medicine opened its doors in this building to the first class of Arizona medical students in this building in the heart of the campus you'll find the school of Home Economics offices of the dean of women and temporarily the College of Nursing with courses from decorating to Dietetics [Music] the technical study of nutrition here for instance is important in both home economics and in nursing throughout the nation there's an increased emphasis on postgraduate study and at the University of Arizona the graduate college offers the master's degree in approximately 70 fields and the doctor's degree in more than 40 areas of study it's emphasized again that on the campus of the University of Arizona students may begin preparation for any career in the world which is based on a college education there are more than a hundred thousand former students of the University of Arizona and these former students live in every community in Arizona in every state of the nation and in more than 70 foreign countries dr. Richard a Harville president of the University of Arizona speaks concerning these alumni the vast collective contributions which the thousands of former students of the University of Arizona are making to society can be imagined but cannot be described in a few words or phrases next we meet just a few of these former students who represent a variety of professions and accomplishments at the state capitol in Phoenix you'll find a number of distinguished Arizona alumni among them four justices of the Arizona Supreme Court see fred struck meyer lorna Lockwood Jesse Udall and Rennes B Jennings recently retired in the field of agriculture you'll also find outstanding alumni among them these men cited by the Future Farmers of America for outstanding achievements in agriculture a mol wov of Glendale Orville NOx of Chandler and a Marshall Humphrey also of Chandler Arizona is the copper mining center of the nation and representative of the minerals industry is John Lynch jr. manager of the Morenci branch of the Phelps dodge Corporation on the East Coast among the Arizona alumni we find the president of the mcgraw-hill Book Company of New York Curtis G Benjamin the past president of standard brands International Corporation Cecil Hudnall the chairman of the board of directors of Fairchild camera and instrument corporation Sherman W Fairchild in the heart of Chicago's financial district we find the president of the Midwest Stock Exchange James II day in Salt Lake City is another Arizona alumnus dr. Henry Eyring Dean of the University of Utah graduate school and past president of the American Association for the Advancement of science the president of the Monsanto Chemical Corporation is Charles summers another Arizona graduate since his undergraduate days at Arizona Kenneth Bilby has risen to the post of executive vice president of RCA in Los Angeles a number of the leading business executives are Arizona alumni one of these is Lloyd Austin who is president of the security First National Bank in the field of government Arizona is well represented now in Washington DC as a United States Senator from Arizona Paul Fannin also served as governor of the state Morris Udall now represents Arizona in the House of Representatives Stewart Udall served in the House of Representatives was elevated to the cabinet post of Secretary of the Interior by President John F Kennedy seen here with the brothers Udall is another alumnus senator Howard J cannon of Nevada the United States representative from Kentucky Frank Stubblefield was a member of the Arizona class of 1931 a 1964 candidate for president of the United States Barry Goldwater spent some of his undergraduate days at the University of Arizona each year the University campus is the site of many gatherings of arizona's high school students one such occasion is the annual Senior Day which brings seniors from high schools all over the state to the campus another is the annual gathering for girls State [Music] and twice each year hundreds of Future Farmers of America come to the University campus and the university farm a top feature of the football season is band a where more than 2,000 high school musicians join and providing a colorful halftime program of music and marching for bands Minh and spectator alike it is quite a spectacle registration time each September brings better than 22,000 students to the campus representing every state in the nation and many foreign countries this is a time for traditional activities the most important of which are the rally and the annual whitewashing by freshman of the a on Sentinel peak [Music] it's also a time when freshmen become acquainted with their new homes in the campus housing facilities Coronado Hall Arizona Sonora hall and another recent addition Huachuca Hall north of the main campus you'll find fraternity row with better than a dozen chapter houses located here student centers near the campus represent all of the major religious faiths [Music] Student Union Memorial Building is the Center for recreational activity the Union Building was built as a memorial to the 285 Arizona students alumni and faculty members who gave their lives in the two world wars with three large cafeterias the Union Building serves as the center of campus food service as well as a recreational activity in the serious business of learning a student is apt to spend much of his time here in the main library building with its better than a half million volumes or it might be here in the Science Library which houses collections on the physical and Natural Sciences engineering agriculture and technology this is the modern languages building primarily a classroom building it also houses the university's radio and television Bureau the university station's kuat television and radio offer credit classes and general interest programming to the community and train students professionally for careers in radio and in television the College of Law gives its students actual courtroom practice with students acting as witnesses and attorneys and as members of a jury the Department of speech teaches not only public speaking debate and interpretation courses but advanced programs in speech and hearing therapy a part of such a program is the procedure of hearing testing that you see here in the new space Sciences Building are found all the disciplines related to outer space such as the University's famed lunar and planetary laboratory in recent years the Astronomy Department has gained considerable prominence at the university station on Kitt Peak is a 36 inch telescope soon to be supplemented with a larger instrument directly across from the campus are the offices and laboratories of the Kitt Peak National Observatory whenever possible University students are taken to the site where they can best learn in many cases this means field trips for instance the agriculture student can best learn to judge his stock in the field and these students are collecting soil samples for chemical analysis these archaeology students gain much of their practical experience in the field excavating an Indian dwelling built perhaps more than a thousand years ago architecture at the University of Arizona is taught from the point of view of design and trains its students for professional practice in all phases of the profession the University Theatre provides practical experience for students of drama and every interested student can participate in organized choral singing or perhaps blend his talents to the outstanding University of Arizona symphonic orchestra this scene is repeated twice each year in Arizona Stadium as graduating ROTC cadets Army and Air Force pass in review prior to graduation ceremonies for athletic activities the women students have this new building those activities may range from modern dance to folk dance tennis to badminton archery to precision swimming and a host of others [Music] the university is especially proud of both its varsity and intramural athletics program such as this varsity gymnastics program where each year the University of Arizona hosts a tournament and clinic in this field [Music] and because not everyone is the varsity athlete a strong program of intramural Activities is provided [Music] an activity unique to the West is the rodeo and each year the University of Arizona is the site of an intercollegiate rodeo that draws the top teams from schools throughout the West with one of the longest schedules in the country the University of Arizona baseball teams over the years have compiled an enviable record frequently going to the College World Series [Music] [Applause] [Music] in basketball to Arizona teams have compiled an outstanding record over the years [Applause] but of course the highlight of any University athletic program is football and the football season the occasion may be homecoming but it isn't just the football game that brings the old grads back it's the decorations the welcome home spirit the fans and the excitement the float parade and then of course finally the big game [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this then is the University of Arizona but it's much more than what you've seen here for of course the university is essentially people a dedicated faculty here to teach students here to learn although they are students today tomorrow they will be the leaders of our country the University of Arizona is a proud inheritor of the greatness of the past an alma mater training students for the future more important than the place itself is its spirit which more than a hundred thousand former students have carried to every community in Arizona to every state and territory of the nation and to many other countries of the world it's the spirit that the university each year offers to thousands of new students students who discover here the boundaries of human knowledge the vistas beyond who make friendships that endure a lifetime and who plan and build their own blueprint for
