“Black Houston” Oral History (1968)

In this raw footage, an unidentified Texas Southern University student interviews a man named Dasey Carey about his family history. Both of Carey’s parents were born as slaves. As children, they worked in the fields picking cotton. Carey tells stories about his parents’ experiences under slavery, including the threat of violence or death. The interview was likely conducted as part of a student documentary about the history of Houston’s black community, possibly entitled “Black Houston.”
