[Music] oh [Music] oh is that the lot Bomer yes sir excuse me sir sick parade finished who is it Bader G McBain sir could I see you privately sir all right all right Bomer you me dismiss very good sir righto fire ahead just had this letter from my wife sir could you give me a recommendation for compassionate leave sir relax man find yourself a seat while I read this you see so we live in a single apartment and Cath that's my wife she works in a factory and she's all alone except for the neighbor sir and this will be her first baby yes sir that's what's worrying me well tell her to go and see her doctor just as soon as she can if she hasn't got a doctor she lives in a town doesn't she then tell her to go to the nearest antinal clinic they'll put her right what's the matter with B do I make it sound too easy no sir it's not that it's just that I wish I could stop these old women chattering so you know what old women are they put the wind up her right are Mrs McBain I see you've got blankets so I'll give you a few moments extra there's Mrs mat is that the one that had the miscarriage stretching up for those blackout C that did it she's expecting again so she better watch out she'll be having another mess oh dear I met her in the L and Grocers and told her that she shouldn't be drinking in half condition it was Stout she was buying and when I told her would give her a black baby she never had of it fancy imagine that but that's rubbish ignorant rubbish M maybe is so but I wouldn't like to be in her place you're a good husband M the fact is your wife is being scared by old wife's Tales isn't it that's it sir that's why I'm saying she should get proper Medical advice as soon as possible you go off and write a letter to your wife and tell her what I say yes sir you know MC pain there was an act past in 1937 which gives every pregnant woman in Scotland the right to ask for all the skilled attention she needs and if necessary free of charge a nation's life is in the health and happiness of its people and in the children they raise up to follow them since the War of 1914 18 there have passed into the statute book no fewer than 23 acts in recognition of this simple truth if Scottish adults now live longer if fewer babies die it is largely because the local authorities have made use of the powers given them under these acts and have made it possible for you doctors midwives Health visitors and nurses to fight against the appalling conditions that began to develop in Scottish cities during those years of unemployment but in spite of all this work infant mortality is still too high in 1938 the best year on record before the present war of 88,000 children born in Scotland 6,000 died before one year of age each and another 4,000 were still born why did they die of that 6,000 25 00 were weaklings without much chance of survival another 4,000 lives were still born most of these still births were caused by the condition of the mother during pregnancy 2,500 more died as the result of infection or other disease pneumonia bronchitis diarrhea deaths caused by infection are due to the terrible overcrowding of our cities and to to the insanitary conditions of people's homes is this exaggeration no women who have decent living conditions decent homes and Facilities who can afford the best medical attention stand four times as good a chance of having aive and healthy baby as the average working class mother but since the war things have been improving because more money is coming into poor h homs the government's policy of extra milk orange juice and cod liver oil for mothers and babies has caused a great Improvement in the health of the people but there is still a lot to be done and it will be a long time before we shall see the last of all the slums and overcrowding of City Life in the meantime our first job is to persuade all prospective mothers to come to us for skilled medical advice as soon as they know they are pregnant and not leave it till the last moment if we can guarantee the mother's good health during their months of pregnancy the first stage of the battle against infant mortality is being one and the emo said to tell you to go straight away to the anal Clinic is this your first baby yes well don't worry sorry I've had four here already without any trouble the sisters are all very nice that's good this oh that's you sister wait you for you this is my B come sit down will you is this your first baby yes sister how are you feeling I'm fine have you had any his illnesses no nothing that I can remember and your parents and family are they quite healthy yes they're fine too and when are you expecting the baby um November I think sister can you remember the date of your last period yes sister it was the first week in February MH yes that would make it about the beginning of November well I'm glad you've come to see us so early Mrs mcine I see you live in a single apartment yes sister you see my husband's in the Army and I've been working in a factory now how' you feel about things is there anything you want to know well yes sister I was wondering whether to go on at the factory or not doctor will advise you about working and when to stop and I'll tell you how to apply for your sickness benefit you'll get your army maternity allowance four months before baby is due I'll fill up this milk form for you take it to the food office and they'll give you your coupons oh thank you very much sir sister try and start making things for baby sister Hall will give you your patterns in the mothercraft room when you're a bit further on I'll give you a line for a maternity bundle that will save you a bit of expense and will I have the baby in hospital or at home sister which do you prefer well it's kind of awkward at home I think I'd rather go to hospital well if we can book a bed for you in hospital we will but you understand you're terribly full and the difficult cases have first claim but don't you worry if if you have the baby at home the Midwife will see to everything she'll arrange for the doctor and if anything went wrong the doctor would arrange for the specialist now if you'll go into the cubicle and undress doctor will examine you when you're ready okay thank you she said the doctor spent a long time going over her sir and in the end she didn't say much at all but just gave her some medicine and asked her to come back in a month's time does that mean there's something wrong sir well what does it mean nothing out of the arum being for your wife is pretty revolutionary she's going to produce in 99 months a 7 and A2 pound baby from something no bigger than a pinpoint the doctor's examination is a routine precaution which will be repeated every month and oftener as our time approaches I'll show you one reason why yeah see this it's the baby inside the womb this is what actually happens the baby attaches itself to the wall of the wom in order to get nourishment from the mother's bloodstream as soon as possible it looks rather like a growth a parasite doesn't it and that's what it is it is New Life feeding on and growing out of the old life you see how the baby throws out spongy rootlets onto the wall of the womb which forms the placenta or after birth it is through the placenta that the baby gets its nourishment the mother's bloodstream flows into the placenta the baby absorbs what it needs for its growth of bone brain and liver and the rest is carried away by the mother's bloodstream the doctor examines your wife every month to see among other things that she is getting the right kind of bodybuilding foods and that her bloodstream is Rich enough to feed herself and her child as well it is the doctor's job to see that your wife drinks enough milk to provide the calcium for the baby's bones to see that your wife gets extra iron into her system for the extra blood needed for the baby's circulation and liver that's probably what the medicine is that your wife mentioned the doctor knows that your wife's heart has got to do more pumping and that as the baby grows in size and weight The Strain increases so that your wife must rest when she feels breathless and stop working in the factory I think you can expect your baby sometime within the next fortnite Mrs McBain you're are very strong and healthy and in good good condition and I'm looking forward to seeing your baby when it arrives now take this it's your letter of admission to the hospital keep it carefully and hand it in when you get there yes and how will I know when my time has come doctor you'll start taking short and not very severe pains about every half an hour oh yes if you feel like it walk up to the hospital if you don't feel strong enough phone them and they'll send an ambulance to fetch you is that quite clear yes thank you doctor now let me see is there anything else your mother-in-law is staying with you isn't she yes doctor she'll be staying with me until I can go back to my work good if nothing happens during the next fortnite come back and see me in the usual way the baby doesn't always come on the right date and is there anything special that I have to remember doctor yes don't worry of course you'll have an anesthetic if you wanted but the degree of pain varies with different women Labor Works in stages during the first stage the muscles of the room contract and relax about every half hour but as these Ms are largely outside the mother's control she can help by relaxing but not by trying as many women do to strain their stomachs down the only result of this straining too early is to make the mother dead tired before she reaches the second stage when her help is needed these muscular contractions become gradually quicker until at last the baby has reached its correct position in the womb now is the time when the mother can actively help the muscular contractions become much stronger and much faster as nature seeks to expel the baby the more the mother tries to push the baby down the more it helps the doctor who will not touch her or the baby unless it is absolutely necessary it is the golden ruling child birth to leave the mechanics of it to Nature as much as possible once the baby is born the mother has a short breathing space and then the placenta having fulfilled its function during pregnancy is Cast Away as after birth youve got a fine re Mrs MC no go to sleep [Music] in [Music] all time in except those mothers who only be 3 days in bed now this one will strengthen those tired and softened stomach muscles and will help you to get back your girlish WL ankles crossed arms at your sides Palms downward press the thighs firmly together contract your stomach muscles and press your buttons together relax once more thighs together contract press the butons relax once more contract press relax good now we'll try one the PS for rest [Music] feeling when I've done this I'll feed the baby I wonder if angers is good my yet when my M comes back she can look after things while I go and get the baby's own juice a good thing not much bother I was luy get a caught but I wish I'd simp to keep the P instead of down in the clothes I don't like it getting damped down there I wish had a kitchen to myself I can keep it fast cleaner we things they going be find from the offer hands and the wa in the school I suppose she's a too many children and the not just won't come anymore I wouldn't be her for ,000 she's got fine more than she's able her and the children are not well all right I'm not too tired and my mother does the heavy washing good now I'd like you to come down to the clinic next week to have a postal examination so the doctor can see that everything has gone back to normal oh yes but do remember the exercises you'll reap the benefit when you come to have the next baby good gracious sister you're looking far before you well that's our job isn't it sister yes Mrs Kennedy's baby's got her as oh yes I know I'm going to see her now I'm kind of frightened for my Alan there's hardly room to breathe here and the Winter's coming on I'm not frightened Mrs MCB so long as you keep everything spotlessly clean your breasts and everything that comes in contact with his little body he'll be all right don't go over to B feeding try to keep right onto the spring and don't worry Wilson there sumerville there MCB Macintosh Wilson hello McBane good news from home yes sir just said this sir congratulations McBane he's a finally chat thank you sir we need them like that in [Music] Scotland [Music] la [Music] [Applause] if you never hear the church clock chiming the small hours it doesn't seem to matter what sleep really is but if you do there's a reason for it and there's always a reason why one child will usually sleep well and another won't what's the most obvious cause of lying awake hour after hour pain serious illness yes or even indigestion and certainly aches of one kind or another and then there's insomnia here we are bed lamp burning book in hand no sleep's come at last very restless the kind you hardly realize you've had not deep enough to make you feel refreshed in the morning but still rest of a kind if that Lorry always went by just after 4:00 a.m. this probably wouldn't have happened because it's unfamiliar noises that wake us but it isn't only noise or discomfort that keeps a person awake twisting and turning staring at the ceiling Mrs Parkins has lost her handbag when she went to bring it up to the bedroom for safety last thing as she always does it wasn't there it wasn't in the house so instead of settling down comfortably she had to worry means going out first thing getting all behind with the housework I did have it coming out of rigs I must have had it there now let me think coming out of rigs did I go anywhere else did I go to the Post Office afterwards no no or did I the basq that's about it had the basket on my arm could easily have got jolted out that means phoning the Lost Property and then the police worry is like a great dark shape which thrusts itself forward in the mind making sleep [Music] impossible a bright shape can have the same result Tom Meredith wants to be a professional footballer one of the Spurs Talent Scouts was watching yesterday when Tom played a very good game on the wing playing a game mentally uses [Music] [Applause] energy the excitement has certainly kept him awake and when he does sleep he'll sleep more deeply but he won't want to get up in the morning Mrs Parkin's worry is also tiring she knows that if only she could make up her mind to turn her thoughts to pleasanter things she would soon drop off and in the morning her trouble wouldn't seem quite so bad a child doesn't realize this children have far more worries and excitements than Mrs Parkins and Tom Meredith but they can't just accept the fact that they do need sleep so they often find it difficult to settle down yet sleep is tremendously important for them a baby often sleeps as much as 20 hours a day and all young children should pass half their lives like this whereas we of course only spend a third of our lives in bed what happens to a child during this half of Life growth and renewal of energy of course rest and grow strong don't they say but just as important mental developments part of the sleeping mind is very active look Billy fireman Billy may not remember this dream when he wakes up but that doesn't matter it's helping him subconsciously to relate one thing to another actuality to make believe one effect to another this kind of thing happens every night to all children they sleep in countless different positions one will hardly move at all another will get the bed clothes all tangled up some like to be tucked in tight and snug others want to bed clothes loose most children like sleep it's natural that they should and on the whole they mostly sleep without much trouble but it is a very individual matter Terry's parents know that he sleeps like a log whereas Monica is always restless and there's no need to worry about either of them A change is the thing to watch for here's a child who's suddenly taken to waking up in the night she needs a lot of bedtime story before she'll go to sleep at all and though her mother thought she'd long outgrown a nightlight she cried for one what is the trouble not noise not discomfort not strange surroundings nothing her mother can see worry doesn't often show very clearly in a child's face Behavior like Mages though is a pretty sure sign her present trouble began when she moved up into a new class she'd got used to a teacher who seemed very kind and gentle the new teacher seems much more critical and severe she may not be really but M thinks she is lessons are harder and the difficult ones drag on for such a long time nothing unusual in this but m is a sensitive child this worry is always in the background of her mind and surges forward whenever she gets bad marks the immediate cause of tonight's trouble was an unlucky incident last [Music] Monday hey come [Music] here what are their names come on you know who they are snake snake Jackie and Richard and then and mayis and Harry what are there other names Collins yes and price Collins and [Music] price him him wasn't he'll go to Jack's mother and have Harry's father then who were they why did you tell lies Mommy if somebody knew somebody's names but not where they lived could they find out yes dear of course they could a simple answer to a simple question not to MCH oh that awful feeling of dismay and fear nothing has really happened since that unlucky day except in mag's mind can't talk to M can't be friends with a snake she must be mad all this is a bit mixed up with school worries now that M has at last dropped into a really deep sleep her mind has an enormous amount of sorting out to do it's going to be very difficult to get her up in time tomorrow [Music] morning nothing much wrong with him but there is you know he's pale and heavy eyed not getting enough sleep keeping on the go with a desperate energy but heading for some sort of illness if he goes on robbing himself of rest all this make believe is a substitute for the real exploits he feels he wants to [Music] achieve and when you suggest bed it's a case of all dressed up and nowhere to go bedtime he revolts at the very notion whatever the particular cause of the excitement many children do at times struggle to keep away from D dreary prison-like bed one way to make bed seem more inviting is to read a story he may or may not take to the idea immediately you can't make the child go to sleep and you can't force him to listen but with your own child this isn't really difficult you know what he likes and how to hold his attention he's depending very much on his mother's help in crossing the threshold into sleep alone he wouldn't like it but with a familiar story and a familiar toy as companion he calms down and feels happy about [Music] it sleep is a gentle thing the very idea of going to bed should be broken [Music] gently he'll probably Wake Early eager to be on with his adventures so when you come to have a last look at him it's an excellent idea to bring one of his toys all ready for the morning when it will help him emerge from sleep into the real world again Claire is another child who takes a long time getting to sleep remember we are deliberately looking for problems she sometimes wakes up screaming and once or twice lately has wetted the bed Claire's mother's the trouble [Music] here l well Claire how are you quite well thank you you think she looks a little tired but I suppose she has to work very hard we just can't stop her I'm so clever you know I'm so grown up really I did admire your needle work Claire oh everything has to be just so CLA chose that bracelet she has good taste has she poor kid what a very subtle form of torture and of course quite unintentional it's just mother mother mother all the time swamping the child setting her impossible standards impossible because they're adult and CLA is a child and no misguided Notions of perfection can make her grow up before her time look at cla's bedroom there's nothing of CLA in it this is just mother's idea of the perfect child's room it's also right CLA hardly dares to touch anything what a strain it is trying to please mother all the time when she grows up is she going to want her mother to choose window curtains for her or will there be a Revolt will she go her own way in the end get her own back by deliberately shocking her domineering old-fashioned mother whatever happens the conflict is in her mind now and it's the cause of her nightmares and fears this is one of her bad nightmares being lost in a desert utterly alone and then always the same thing running running knowing what always happens but never stopping in time [Music] whatever is the matter there's nothing to be afraid of the matter is that all her life Claire has been pushed forward by her mother never finding her own feet never feeling the ground solid beneath her her father hasn't had a look in she's been compelled to be utterly dependent on her mother and in her dreams mother isn't there to hold her up the old Teddy who used to be so comforting at bedtime has been thrown away because teddy bears are childish well Claire is still a child a worried frightened child but it isn't the dreams which cause such Terrors it's well the way things are in her home if we pretend for a moment that what goes on in the mind is a kind of game we can imagine that black shapes are trying to thrust themselves forward and make us anxious or depressed and that we counter these fears and worries by moving little protective shapes in other words by reasoning there check but sometimes reason or common sense fails and a black shape does get right through this happened last night to Mrs Parkins but now she's dealing with her problem we usually can deal with our worries because as it were we know the moves and know we can make them but now come down to the child's level the same game but how different it seems a child has to learn the moves without being able to see them clearly and until she can move the protective shapes properly the black is always threatening if only the child could get a really good look at these emotions and ideas she doesn't realize it but she can during the half of her life that is sleep her mind does see more of the game that's why sleep is so much more important to her than to her parents because for the child it's a vital continuation of waking life not just a blank interval but how about the child who worries in bed and doesn't sleep with well she feels she dare not leave the board but must keep on struggling to move those protective shapes if she relaxes an awful fear will sweep forward and never move back a sensitive child dreads being laughed at and keeps her fears to herself you seldom know exactly what's wrong nevertheless you can do a great deal to help simply by reassuring her making her feel that well we all have our worries but we get the better of them in the end making her feel that you'll always be there to help when she needs you it will take time for her fears to die down and during that time you should try to Shield her from fresh worries or excitements knowing now that she isn't going to be laughed at or scolded for being silly the child is relaxing into sleep confident as it were that her parents will always come to the rescue when the game gets the better of her you can never make a child go to sleep he has to like the idea but now one morning whatever was this at 7:00 no little red engine Mrs ransom's hurry barked Bow Wow wow it's never been late before Farm is he going to drop off quickly this depends on a lot on how he was prepared for bed on whether his bedtime routine was what he's always been used to it depends also on whether his mother had the time and patience to avoid jerking him away from his toys to lead him firmly yet gently away from the day towards the night it and Polished it and stoked it and got up steam but when he took the brakes off sh sh sighed the little red engine and didn't move the driver tried again chu chu sh beside the little red engine beside the little red engine and didn't [Music] move [Music] all [Music] [Music] e have you noticed how few people over 21 have really good strong white teeth and how many have decaying and dirty ones like these good teeth don't just happen they need constant care and attention from the very beginning this expectant mother is visiting an anti-natal Clinic she wants advice on how to produce a healthy baby and make sure that it will have good teeth the teeth are forming in the baby's jaw long before it is born during pregnancy the mother must give these a sound Foundation otherwise much of the Care taken of the baby's teeth after its birth will be wasted first she must keep herself healthy by eating the right kinds of food milk is the most important food of all it is rich in calcium and builds strong bones and teeth eggs cheese and butter also contain the vitamins needed for good teeth and bones fresh fruit and vegetables especially when they're raw provide the vitamins and mineral salts necessary for the Healthy Growth of the baby orange juice and C oil are also very important for the expectant mother many women believe it is dangerous to have dental treatment whilst they're pregnant this is entirely wrong decayed teeth should be filled or even taken out if they're too bad septic teeth poison the food the mother eats and that causes danger to the health of the mother and the child so at the beginning of pregnancy be sure to visit the dentist for a thorough examination of your mouth and teeth when the baby is born the mother should if possible feed it herself natural food is better in every way and helps to form good teeth and of course the mother must continue her careful diet as the quality of her milk depends on it all this time the baby's teeth have been growing though they will not start to show before he's five or 6 months old as soon as this happens he is ready to have solid foods added to his diet when a baby is teething he likes to bite on something hard to help the teeth come through the gums and of course he'll bite anything he can get hold of a grabby toy or even his thumb so instead give him a bone or bake aite ring not a dummy a ring is far easier to keep clean and won't spoil the shape of his mouth and you'll find he'll like the ring just as much harder foods such as chopped meat not minced meat should be given to a child by the time he's 2 years old and his double teeth are through chewing helps to develop his Jaws so don't hurry him if he's rather slur at his meals and by 3 years the child should be eating normal adult food this is how the teeth grow at about 2 years all the baby teeth should be in position as the child grows so do the jaws and spaces appear between the front teeth beneath the baby teeth the permanent ones are being formed and at about 6 to seven years the four baby front teeth loosen and fall out making way for the permanent ones to come through at the same time all unnoticed the first permanent molers the double teeth appear behind the baby double teeth the baby double teeth are not replaced for some four or 5 Years yet so take special care of them for if they are lost too soon the child will not be able to chew her food properly all this time the permanent teeth are being formed in the Jaws at about 11 to 12 years the baby eye teeth fall out and are replaced by the permanent ones and and at about the same time the baby double teeth make way for the permanent premolar teeth all unnoticed again the second permanent double teeth appear at this age behind the first and lastly at 18 years or so come the wisdom teeth this is how they should have developed and with care everyone one could have attractive teeth but unfortunately and mainly through neglect this seldom happens here is a girl of 17 who has lost many of her back teeth her front ones are decaying and will have to come out soon unless they are cared for immediately she cannot chew her food properly and with the food she swallows the poisonous discharge from her bad teeth this makes her tired and listless the discharge from the bad teeth causes gum boils and abscesses the poisons pass into the bloodstream and are carried to every part of the body leading to poor health and often serious illness when through neglect the teeth have got as bad as these nothing can be done to save them so they'll have to come out fortunately this stage is only temporary and until the gums are ready for false teeth false teeth can be quite comfortable and are far better than decayed ones but they are poor substitutes for good natural teeth and can never look so well even good teeth will Decay if they're neglected and now we'll see how a tooth decays a tooth consists of two parts the crown above the gums and the root below the crown is covered by a hard white substance called enamel beneath the enamel is the Ivory or dentine next the pulp which is the sensitive living part of the tooth from which not only the nerves but also the blood vessels are connected with the rest of the body through a little channel in the root decay is caused by food sticking to the teeth and especially in the spaces between them germs grow in the food particles and ferment them into an acid which dissolves away the enamel this process takes quite a long time and months before the hole is big enough to be noticed or cause toothache a lot of damage has been done when it reaches the dentine the Decay will spread more quickly but it is only when it reaches the nerve that sever toothache occurs this usually means the loss of the tooth decay is often caused by the highly refined food in our diet especially if it is sweet and sticky like bread and jam and biscuits food particles cling to the teeth after swallowing and even the movement of the tongue and cheeks can't shift them as it is food sticking to the teeth that causes Decay each crumb must be got rid of as soon as possible fruit or raw vegetables will do this better than anything else these are cleansing foods and everyone especially children should eat them after each meal but all the good done by this will be undone if sticky foods are eaten in between meals brushing the teeth and gums regularly is also extremely important clean the morning and night and after meals whenever it is possible the most important time of all is last thing at night now a few points on how to clean the teeth properly don't use a hard brush it will only scratch the enamel and make the gums sore it'll last no longer than a short soft brush made of nylon this will get into the crevices far better as the bristles are more pliable use any toothpaste or powder your dentist recommends or you can buy very cheaply from your chemist an equal mixture of precipitated chalk and baking soda with some flavoring added to give it a pleasant taste roughly 6 penny worth will last you 6 months there are more ways than one of using a toothbrush brushing across the teeth like this is no good at all you can't get in between them properly if you wanted to clean in between your fingers you wouldn't brush across them you would brush up and down like this cleaning in between thoroughly brushing up and down isn't very easy for children to do so train them to use this round and round movement it is much easier and gets in between the teeth just as well keep the teeth together all the time especially when you do the back one in this way the cheeks are relaxed and there is plenty of room for the brush you can do the upper and lower ones at the same time use the same movement on the inside surfaces don't forget the front teeth especially the lower ones and of course the crowns of the teeth by the time they're three children should be encouraged to brush their own teeth give them a toothbrush of their own and show them how to do it correctly soon they'll be able to do it quite well by themselves keeping the teeth clean is essential it is especially important to end the last meal at night with something cleansing a piece of apple or a tomato or even a bit of carrot brush the teeth thoroughly before going to bed so that the mouth is cleansed for the night and finally nothing more to eat whatsoever before going to sleep in spite of all this care small holes will still occur from time to time so children should be taken regularly to visit the dentist for examination often a hole is too small to cause pain and cannot be seen or felt until it has got much larger the dentist will find it however and the filling will be far easier and more set is Factory than this large hole which has been so neglected that the tooth may have to come out so never allow your children's teeth to get into such a state before taking them to a dentist they should see their own dentist or go to the welfare center or to the school Clinic every 6 months to have their teeth examined and Polished later when the first signs of a hole do appear they'll be so used to going to the dentist that they won't mind a small filling At All by doing things in this way your children need never be afraid of going to the dentist in order that your children shall have good teeth remember these Five Points the right building foods during pregnancy hard foods and full adult feeding by 3 years of age regular visits to the dentist every 6 months each meal and especially the last meal at night to end with fresh fruit or raw vegetables and finally nothing to eat between brushing the teeth and going to bed you can all have good teeth if you take care and it's well worthwhile because good teeth mean good health and good [Music] looks h e
