The laws of probability and chance indicate if an infinite number of monkeys are given typewriters and allowed to peck away for an infinite time, they will eventually produce all the world's great literature. But in the process we find monkeys like humans also turn out quite a bit of absolute junk. The all-seeing eye of the motion picture camera can document history, explore and reflect our culture and our times, record, create or synthesize art and life itself. Thus, the magic of the cinema lens gives to us a limitless power to teach, inform, activate, demonstrate, inspire, motivate, sell. But with this power, we must also assume a heavy responsibility. We must be forever conscious of our obligation to check the focus and exposure because if we don't, the pictures will turn out all fuzzy and too dark or too light and the colors will be just lousy. During this portion of your Calvin tour, you will be in complete darkness. In this area, color motion picture film, previously exposed in the camera or on a printer, is undergoing processing. This must be done, as I say, in total darkness. To allow even the faintest ray of light to reach any of the thousands of feet of valuable film going through the machines would be disastrous. Now, May I ask a question? By all means. What time is it? The time? Well, IT'S UM WHAT, IN ADDITION TO THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT, does it take for the job of film editing? It takes an individual with these qualities: manual dexterity, dramatic judgment, storytelling sense, a feel for pacing and tempo, endless patience, and most of all, an ability to take genuine pleasure in ruthlessly discarding most of what so many have worked so long and so hard to produce. But that's editing, the elimination of all but the essential. If for one reason or another, you find it impossible, impractical, or undesirable to use live photography in treating a specific subject, there is always the alternative of doing it by animation. This is a tedious, painstaking process, but through it, many unusual concepts are achieved. There is, however, a certain hardcore group that may, if not closely controlled, seek to deter the use of animation. Camera set? Set. Sound mixer? Set. Roll it. Speed. Workshop film, scene one, take one. Action. All right, come on, Frank. Action. In voice recording, the essential quality we must strive for is intelligibility intelligibility uh bility uh Cut. That was good. Good, very good. Do you think it was me, CB? Do you think it was really me? You were sensational, pussycat. Just sensational. We did it, CB. Another great shot. Okay for sound? Okay for sound.
