Better Safe Than Sorry

[Applause] hi my name is johanna and i'm ted we're here to talk to you about something serious especially for kids you know most adults you'll ever need have one thing in common they're good people they'd never hurt anyone on purpose but some people not many are dangerous some bad things have happened to kids lately because they met up with some of these people you've probably heard of kids being hurt kidnapped or even killed you've seen it on the news or read about it in the papers it doesn't happen that often but it does happen when all of us were small our parents watched out for us now we're getting older we're on our own more and more so we have to watch out for ourselves that means we have to use our heads and when certain situations come up we must think before we act for instance here's some kids playing ball after school nothing unusual about that but off in the distance is a man watching the game if you notice a person like this a couple of questions should come to mind what is he doing here why is he just hanging around there's nothing wrong with it but most grown-ups just don't hang around let's watch what happens all right come on karen hit it what do you think i'm trying to do right here [Music] hey you've got a good arm there come here for a second i just thought of something listen a friend of mine gave me a transistor radio but i've got one i don't need it how would you like to have it what kind is it i don't know it's out there in my car why don't you come out and take a look at it hey it's all right really come on out and take a look at it if you don't want it it's okay okay let's stop if you were this kid what would you do turn off the film if you want and take a minute to talk about it remember what we said about using your head ask yourself a question here is a person you've never seen before he doesn't know you at all why do you want to give you a present it really doesn't make sense does it come on down to the gate no no thanks don't accept anything gifts toys candy anything from someone you don't know that man over there might not be dangerous but it's better to be safe than sorry and if you have any questions about the way son is acting tell an adult you know and trust [Applause] here's another situation you might find yourself in jenny and karen are on their way home from the shopping center watch what happens hi jenny would you girls like a ride you remember us don't you we're jim and margaret smith we know you're folks oh yeah i think i met you once well jump in we'll give you a ride home your parents won't mind here's a situation that's a little different jenny may know the people in the car take a second to think about it what would you do the problem is jenny thinks she knows these people but if she does she doesn't know them very well i'm sorry but my mom doesn't want me to take rides from anybody that i don't know real well thanks anyway we'll just wait for the bus oh of course your mom's absolutely right tell her we said hello i will bye that was a hard choice the smiths were nice people and there's no reason for jenny not to go with them except jenny just didn't know them that well like we said before it's better to be safe than sorry never get in a car with anyone unless you know them well or your parents say it's all right all you have to do is say no be polite but firm like the smiths most people will understand if it's a good idea not to accept brides from people you don't know very well how about people you don't know at all take a look at this when it comes to hitchhiking most of you have heard it all before so we're just gonna say a couple things about it it's true that most people who would stop to give this kid a ride wouldn't try to hurt him but it only takes one time for things to go wrong the fact is this once you climb into a car with someone you don't know you're trapped you can't get away it's almost impossible to get out of a moving car safely that means if anything happens to you you're stuck [Applause] no matter how badly you have to get somewhere don't hitchhike if you do you might not get there at all speaking of cars and people have you ever felt like you were being followed look at that car following that girl [Applause] if you were in this girl's place and this car had been following you what would you do the answer's simple just turn around and walk the other way [Applause] it's safer to walk facing the traffic anyway what if the car turns around the thing to do then is to go someplace where it's safe a store a neighbor's house somewhere where there's other people tell somebody what's happening don't be afraid to ask for help and here's a good idea when you're going someplace don't go alone go with a friend it's much more fun at the front and it's safer too it's weird but robin's great she does things what time is your mother and father coming home around 10. the time will come if it hasn't already when your parents will figure they can leave you home alone to take care of yourself and you probably can too but like we said being on your own means using your head thinking for yourself got an apple okay lisa and vic are spending the night together lisa's parents have gone out to dinner and the girls are home alone hello hello i'm uh conducting a survey yeah are you watching tv right now who is it some guy he wants to know what we're watching on tv what's the name of that movie i don't know we don't know the name in the movie but it's on channel 50. tell them some dumb thing about a girl running away from home you know what it's about no that's okay how old are you 12. are you alone no my friend's here with me how old is she she's 12. what's this guy to do with television anyway it's just part of the survey are your mom and dad home what i said are your mom and dad home no they went out we're home alone do i get some sort of cries for it's kind of [Music] something very dangerous has just happened if the man on the telephone got lisa's number from the phone book that means he knows her address too lisa just told him that she and vicki were home alone never give out any information about yourself to anyone you don't know and never let anyone in the house when your parents are gone anyway what about lisa and vicky lisa has already made one mistake let's see what she does about it that guy in the phone's buggers well i saw the same thing on this movie lounge this man called up this lady and pretended to be someone else just to see if she was home alone get off it that guy on the phone was just doing a survey they did it all the time yeah but he seemed a lot more interested in us than what we were watching maybe you're right what should we do a good question if you were in their place what would you do first you should always have an idea what to do if a problem comes up talk things over with your parents ask them what to do about certain situations who you should call where you should go where they are mrs black this is lisa i'm sorry to bother you but my parents aren't home and they told me to call you if i needed to yeah this man just called that phone call was probably nothing but like we keep on saying it's better to be safe than sorry this is our last situation we have to show you chances are something like this will never happen to you but it could if it does you should have some idea how to handle yourself here's the situation this girl has stopped to look at some kittens a man she doesn't know has come up beside her watch what happens they're cute aren't they oh yeah do you have a kitten uh no i'd like to but my mother says our apartment's too small that's too bad you know uh these are himalayans they're like siamese but they're a lot fluffier will you please let go of me hey i'm not trying to hurt you or anything i just wanted to show you something if you were this girl and that man had grabbed you what would you do in a situation like this you really have to use your head and think fast because there are other people around the best thing to do here is get away and get help [Music] this isn't like your parents or relatives or someone like that putting their arms around you and hugging you or something what we are talking about is someone you don't know or don't know very well putting their hands on you remember your body belongs to you and no one has the right to touch it without permission if anyone tries you have the right to ask them to stop if they won't the safest thing to do is get away from them as quickly as possible and don't be afraid to ask for help if you have to by now you must be asking yourself why anyone would want to hurt kids in the first place it's really hard to say but what we do know is that it happens anyone who watches the news knows that the best thing that we as kids can do is learn to be responsible for our own safety think if you feel something strange is going on think use your brains if something does happen that you don't feel right about ask someone your mom or dad or teacher somebody ask them what they think chances are it's nothing to worry about maybe you've heard of kids getting into situations like the ones you just saw after the film why don't you talk about them with your teacher and the rest of your class make sure you know what to do if something like that should ever happen to you chances are it never will but there's no need to take chances it's better to be safe than sorry that's right it is better to be safe than sorry [Music]
