[Music] [Music] [Music] that does it mrs. Durant don't forget your new number its main six nine seven five five you sure got a job on your hands here don't remind me I just wish movie was as easy a job as having you connect my phone [Music] I'm glad mrs. giraffe feels the way she does I mean about getting her telephone in stone you see when she came to our office the other day I remember her coming over to my bed putting down we talk and your newest 17 and in no time at all I could tell mr. Abney we were going to be able to help her fine we're moving in on Tuesday it'll be wonderful to have our phone right away is that all yes that's all the information I need well goodbye then and thanks so much you've been very helpful you're welcome people like that make you feel good it's nice to be thought of as help yet my telephone job is just one of many if mrs. Durant could only see the whole job she only knew what had to be done and what it took for this to happen for this to happen there had to be a path for mrs. Durance telephone to the central office equipment her telephone is going to use this path is but one of many which make up a cable leading to the central office it's a path nobody walks over but lots of people talk over in fact everyone on Henry Street ties into it at some point families joining with other families in being a part of the community that telephone service makes possible on Monroe Street our path to the central office is joined by cable carrying the telephone lives of other parts of the town the cables wherever they are require keen eyes backed up by training and experience to make sure that things up there are as they should be [Music] the town is growing which is as it should be so we've got to grow too and that takes planning and building by people whose job it is to plan and build telephone service [Music] people like our tailor bill Murphy and Glenn Peters [Music] due to the number of paths converging on the central office when we start coming to the center of town the cable goes underground [Music] wherever there is cable there must be people to maintain us it's George Tobin's and Ray Thompson's job to see that mrs. Durance telephone line along with all the others makes its way safely through the town and to the central office [Music] we're beneath this symbol of service our path continues through this underground cable vault up to the central office mainframe the people and equipment that helped to make this happen but before that telephone rings I've got to connect the telephone wires mrs. Durant is going to use to this telephone number she's been assigned on what we call a mainframe now that's this pretty complicated looking piece of equipment with every telephone in the neighborhood connecting to it that Dave Parker and I are working on we're connecting up the pair of wires that follow the path from the telephone pole outside of mrs. Durant's house to our central office once the connection is made here mrs. Durant has a telephone number nearby Johnny Payne is making another connection on a similar frame which connects mrs. Durant's telephone number to the dial equipment when these operations are completed mrs. Durant can make receive calls through dial tone these line finders will let mrs. Durant and all the other customers know that they found an available path for their call each time a call is made these switches advance the call step-by-step to the equipment that completes that call equipment that has continually been planned going into production and coming off the assembly line to be installed where it will do the most good to take care of future needs and be ready to meet present needs but it takes more than equipment to do our job I sit here alone as my debt and yet I don't feel alone all I have to do is look down at my routing list and I have all the company I need there's train gambler Hey Louis Johnson Martin and the others installers to whom the service orders go so that tomorrow our customer is expecting someone from the telephone company won't be disappointed well Joe Martin or any other installer will undoubtedly be able to handle this order providing he has the equipment to do it with that evening a supply truck follows a course overnight covered roads to keep a rendezvous with the needs of installer Joe Martin and many other installers who tomorrow may use what Ted Reardon and bill cook carry in their truck I don't think Ted and Bill have ever met Joe but they've seen his installation truck many times along with all the others at the Albany Avenue garage and they know that if they didn't get around with their supplies at night Joe and the others wouldn't be getting around very much the next morning [Music] another swell day it sure is Joe and you've got places to go and things to do today you're not kidding where are you working out of these days Joe same place Albany Avenue garage what kind of a crew they got down there a good bunch good bunch best gang in the world always makes you feel good when you get there and meet them and find out what happened with them yesterday then you get your orders that tell you what's going to happen today [Music] Poorman Jim Monaghan gives you the lowdown on anything new [Music] once you've got your orders you take a quick gander to see that you've got everything you need hop into your truck out in the driveway head for the first job once that happens brother you're on your own within the spec book of course [Music] the foreman is responsible for Joe Martin going to the Durant home but don't forget a lot of what Joe has to do to give mrs. Durant service has been laid out for him by others whose job it is to provide him with such information as what pole he'll climb to find the right terminal box what pair of wires he'll use in that box [Music] what cable will carry the Durant's line even what telephone number he'll insert in the direct phone all came from the work of people Joe knows but may not often see but there's one person he and the other installers always talk to when they're through with the job information hello Joe what's cooking so everything under control order number T one six six eight three all done one 302 G 724 Toru yeah and no cracks about me being high man on the totem pole later the directory mrs. Durant receives contains the telephone numbers in town in which she is interested accept her new number that'll come with the next edition until then her number is made available to the public and practically no time at all by the information and intercepting operators because when mrs. Durant's telephone installation was completed that information was immediately sent to them and the directory department which in turn sent her change in listing to the printer so that by 8 o'clock the next morning Helen verdict and all the other information operators can say to anyone who calls information service for the dorrance new number Arthur e Durant one moment please I find a Eid around at 17 Henry Street the number is main six nine seven five five all calls to mrs. Durance old number are routed to the intercepting operators what number are you calling please Republic nine seven two oh one has been changed to main six nine seven five five you're welcome here's another place where telephone names and numbers have to appear when Elaine Miller filed your telephone record with all the others that completed your membership in the telephone community which entitles you to the family news and all other pertinent information don't worry about writing we must always write first whether you came in or called in this is what had to be done by people you saw or never saw but all whose separate efforts to provide telephone service were combined in one joint effort involving people and equipment it finds the fellow down the block who you knew had some job with the telephone company getting together with the Installer whose work depends on this girl who handles the orders or on this fella who can find the circuit he'll need our work may involve keeping mrs. Durance account giving out her new number or checking the cable path or telephone is going to use it makes no difference what our jobs entail when mrs. Durance said I just wish movie with is easier job is having you connect my phone we're glad it tells us our job of providing telephone service has been accomplished the way we hoped it would be [Music]
