Description: This un-aired news footage for WOAI-TV features Shaka, a male southern white rhinoceros calf born at the San Antonio Zoo. He wanders around the pen, staying close to his mother, Gertrude. Later, a staff member climbs into the pen to check on mother and baby, while another daringly closes an inner gate. Born on August 28, 1972, Shaka was the first southern white rhino bred entirely in captivity in the United States. Thanks to conservation and breeding efforts, today southern white rhinos are the only non-endangered rhino species.
