[Music] [Music] a [Music] [Music] [Music] a [Music] [Music] [Music] a yeah e to do with him either looks like the most important things are things we can't see now you've got the idea you won't be needing me anymore yeah dearly Christians were too absorbed in the Lord's eminent return to be much concerned about the date of his birth their rights were religious and austere and often grew out of the ancient customs of their Homeland is simple in the second grade Gregory will apply it to more complex words he will continue to use structural analysis all through life he will use it in identifying words composed of roots prefixes and suffixes the problems of word recognition are complex no one approach brownies to get all the toys ready for Christmas but he forgot all about the sugar cookie and before the fairy Snow Queen came Santa fell asleep with all his toys at his feet [Applause] holy [Music] and now it's January the Sun never climbs high in the sky in January it's almost noon time but see how long the Shadows are for [Music] la [Music] [Music] and of course two heads are better than one for the serious business of last minute gift [Music] wrapping [Music] we must go back a century and a half it is the year 1818 in the holiday season the Christmas season in the village it is the time of age-old Christmas Customs groups of girls are visiting each house all right I'll go find my kite wait a minute what makes a kite fly the wind and can you see the wind oh well I'll have some warm milk and go to bed hold up what now our friendship a true embodiment of peace on Earth Good Will to [Music] men [Music] hello and Hereafter all musical dolls will wear gold pins in remembrance of the two toys who fell in love how nice how sweet what fun and now very Snow Queen I believe we're ready now may all the toys be as Handa made you and this master the copper Smith of Syria made for you thank you too my faithful people and when the ceremony of the temple is over I shall return kindness with kindness and presence with presence and so 2,000 years ago the months of the winter solstice became a season of peace on Earth a time of goodwi in the Roman World tapers burning in front of the friendly Idol signal that during Saturn's father Moore thought of many things the child he had seen the beauty of the night but Christmas soon to come and so it was as some say that on his return to the Village father Moore wrote a poem the words seemed to come quickly and easily merged with our heritage and became part of the Christmas celebration as we know it today so truly composed of gifts from many lands from ancient Rome the custom of celebrating and giving giving presents from Palestine the story of the Nativity the Christmas lights and the time of the feast for this Christmas tree with its many different colored ornaments and this fruit tree are examples of such commercially prepared sets stamped felt materials to be cut out by teachers or pupils are also available sets of this nature range from from Pagan Germany the fur tree and the Holly [Music] from England the bells in mistleto the U log the Christmas pudding and many Carol hey looks like I lost my helper tonight well you can't have her all the time I need it sometimes too you know I promis mom would help her make some Christmas cookies but I'll be done pretty soon oh okay you go right ahead but if you need anyone to test those cookies I'll be in the basement okay Christmas is a wonderful time isn't it it's even better than it was when I was expression through myths and legends as different as the people and the cultures from which they emerged Blended out of Biblical history myth Legend and of Customs as old as the human race here is [Music] the [Music] mhm I was afraid of this with whom are you in love musical doll with the toy soldier imagine in love how does it feel does it hurt is it nice go away all of you I'm in love with the musical doll too very Snow Queen what shall we do well the toys cannot be changed unless a musical doll and the toy soldier [Music] CHR the and as people from many lands came streaming to our Shores in search of Freedom they brought with them their Christmas songs and their customs oh Christmas is a season of good cheer and Glad Tidings wherever people appreciate the significance of the Christ story their joy and gratitude the resulting mixture is poured into Petri dishes but right it isn't Christmas because you believe in Santa Claus it's Santa Claus because you believe in Christmas if my name's Snoopy Santa Claus calls me Snoopy because I'm Snoop I work for Santa Claus I used to make toys like all the other little brownies but that was when I was much younger now Santa has a special job for me there's some red claw and there are the whiskers [Music] and there's the coat that's a pretty good fit I still don't feel right about fooling [Music] how do you like my fancy [Music] playing [Music] he to [Music] [Music] Christ [Music] e [Music] e [Music] [Music] d e for either by forbearing of Labor feasting or in any other way as a festival shall be find five Shillings he he for some 200 years the more extreme Puritans fought against Christmas as a religious holiday by that time however [Music] he then shakes on colored glitter until it sticks on all sides of the [Music] wire four-year-old Jamie helps to finish the [Music] trimming [Music] I [Music] [Applause] [Music] for back in Nazareth the homes Spruce and fur are our favorite Christmas tree these trees and most other important conifers are evergreen that is their leaves persist for more than one season but not all conifers are Evergreen in North America the Larch of the northern bog and the bald Cyprus of Southeastern swamps holy [Applause] [Music] nightly [Music] it might be [Music] fun for the truth is that most of our major institutions in a very short time have lost much of the hold they used to have on the minds and imaginations of Americans especially Young Americans blind obedience to any kind of Authority seems a thing of the remote past e father Moore thought of many things the child he had seen the beauty of the night the Christmas soon to come and so it was as some say that on his return to the Village father Moore wrote a poem the words seem to come quickly and easily and this master the cop Smith of Syria made for you thank you too my faithful people and when the ceremony of the temple is over I shall return kindness with kindness and presence with presence and so 2,000 years ago the months of the winter solstice became a season of peace on Earth a time of Good Will in the Roman World tapers burning in front of the friendly Idol signal that during Saturn's and when at last he reached the hill still overlooking his own village and some children came to meet him he taught them the song he had learned down the hill ran the children and with them went the song Silent Night for surprises who conjure up fantasies of a giant tree glittering with lights and tinsel planted in an acre of bright new toys and so later when the children are in bed sleeping fitfully to be sure the scene is set [Music] the [Music] this is a different Nazareth from the one which you saw during the week there is no bustle of the market place but a quiet holiday feeling everyone is dressed in their finest clothes [Music] [Music] oh that was fine musical doll Now fairy Snow Queen you'd better change the toys back so I can put them in my sack well you've got your train young fell you can drive her anywhere you want to California south satet or Timbuktu so take her away Johnny you're Casey Jones [Music] III which is our December as the beginning of the Festival of Lights as the gospel spread and gave new meaning to the Greek and Roman culture so did these lights gain new significance Christianity came to signify light to those who thirsted for faith hope and salvation magic power you can't change them back no jingle bell jingle bells jingle all the way way way but why fairy Snow Queen why well sander the queen of the fairies told me that if I didn't stop playing jokes for Christmas in Nazareth is a far cry from the bustling commercialism which we know the holiday is celebrated in a simple way trees and branches are brought in from the neighboring Hills for decorations for the home that's all right you want to help me put up the Christmas decorations you're not mad at me of course not you're not mad mad at me of course not you're fortunate to have Mrs Howard as a teacher I know we had so much fun in our class now they'll give these 10 minutes I don't want them to burn mom yes Hy how much does it C make these cookies every year honey I never really come I don't know why do you ask I'm trying to figure out something last week in church Mrs Howard was talking about a gift she didn't say what remember Julius you don't have to be afraid to be gay as long as you are true to the Lord the pagans of Burning Lights and streets because they fear the dark you you have found your light in the Star of Bethlehem but why are you burning papers in your window I know that you're a good Christian Jonas and I don't quite understand the Salvation Army wishes you a happy and holy Christmas for a child Christmas may be the happiest day of his life or the most tragic one poverty May prevent happiness well we're nearly through tremendous Christmas tree I think it looks better than last year yes I think it does too wait till the kids see this tomorrow morning this a cute little fell where'd you get it oh in the usual place the 5 and 10 I thought so you know I think this would be a very nice place to hang that right there he has a smudge on his nose I like red ornaments better you sure there aren't any more Burger one this one is absolutely perfect is not the heads off oh it tastes just as good doesn't it there we are all 196 of them your confidence no Sandy this she's certainly been busy today I sent her to bed early thinking she'd be tired but when I uh Mr T would you please pass me some of that wonderful Christmas dinner that that leg will be plenty I think that's a wonderful size leg that is just a little bit please if you don't mind uh wait a minute I get the Rish that looks very wonderful very wonderful how will some of those do those will be very fine very fine [Applause] [Music] indeed it is Christmas Eve The Melody of A Christmas Carol fills the SCH night in a village in Europe it is Christmas Eve the same [Music] song oh my what a free for members of the Armed Forces who can't be home the Salvation Army offers the next best thing a home away from home Christmas time is family time the Salvation Army enables poor families to have their Christmas dinners together for for a spicy bouquet old-fashioned spices and contemporary gity what a marvelous [Music] combination you'll know it's a fruity blend if it has the warm Lush mellow scent of Sun rened Fruit and finally the modern type it's dry and brilliant sophisticated and subtle and there's an elusive top note frequently a floral one for carrying with them a painting of Mary and Joseph boys representing the Shepherds of Bethlehem come to the houses caroling they are collecting Gifts of food for the poor the story they tell in song is one that never loses interest for it is the story my name's Snoopy Santa Claus calls me Snoopy because I'm Snoop I worked for Santa Claus I used to make toys like all the other little brownies but that was when I was much younger now Santa has a special job for me all right Santa now toys be as Sant I made you toys I said be as you were no what's the matter fairy Snow Queen why do not the toys change look they're still the same is this another one of your jokes most people had accepted it as a social as well as a church Festival because of the close kinship to England in language and tradition English Christmas custom continued to cross to the new world Small Wonder that even the German Christmas tree came to America by way and Hereafter all musical dolls will wear gold pins in remembrance of the two toys who fell in love how nice how sweet what fun and now very Snow Queen I believe we're ready now may all the toys be as Handa made you silent night holy night even as he wrote the priest wondered whether the poem could be set to music father Moore decided to take it to France grer the two friends priests and school teacher talked it over together the school teacher began to read there I think you have it how do you like it isn't that beautiful oh you've done such a wonderful job I'm glad you girls decided to work on this project you know this is more than just pieces of cardboard that have been cut out and put here this nativity scene will remind us of a a wonderful event the birth of Jesus [Music] the spread of indigenous Arc has its conspicuous Champions like Julia codesido who loves her people and the works of their hands through her own painting she perpetuates their customs and their strong fa and there before him lay a baby with his mother perhaps as he watched father Moore may have thought of another child the Christ child lying in the [Music] manger Let's Take a Ride it's all dark in this show [Music] n [Music] hey looks like I lost my helper tonight well you can't have her all the time I need it sometimes too you know I promise Mom and help her make some Christmas cookies but I'll be done pretty soon oh okay you go right ahead but if you need anyone to test those cookies I'll be in the basement okay Christmas is a wonderful time isn't it it's even better than it I as this of course but indelible in Boyhood [Music] memory [Music] [Applause] [Music] la poor strip I'm afraid he's going to be awfully disappointed you said it yes he couldn't be satisfied with some toys no he's got to be different I feel just like I'm talking to myself you are here I'll move over so you can see me it's simple in the second grade Gregory will apply it to more complex words he will continue to use structural analysis all through life he will use it in identifying words composed of roots prefixes and suffixes the problems of word recognition are complex no one approach for y that you wanted to see Santa Claus and nobody in this whole country ever saw Santa Claus not really and I didn't want you to stop believing in him look I'll give you whatever Santa Claus brings me this year next year too D are you very mad at me go away I'm sorry [Music] [Music] a [Music] a coffee maybe hm um are are you warm enough have you had a nice drill um it was wonderful of you to come Santa uh how long can you how long can you stay oh you're not going right now but it wasn't very much for all Romans were free and equal in homes all over Rome children were making clay dolls to commemorate Saturn's love for his human children and wherever the Roman empire spread the Festival of Saturn followed merging with customs of other people becoming a sort of Christmas long before Christ was born then according to prophecy [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] here from the classic past is a foreshadowing of the spirit of Christmas the time is 2,000 years ago the place Rome the day December 17th of our calendar the first day of the Festival of Saturn the oldest of [Music] hello [Music] gadgets contributing to man's convenience multiply around [Music] him but despite all the mechanisms he has invented in his pursuit of personal happiness man is finding existence in the modern world full of go to sleep children and tomorrow we'll see what Santa has left good night good night good night sleep tight don't let any bu good night good night good night good night a visit you don't say very much do you I thought you would at least wish me a merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry [Music] [Music] Christmas and of course two heads are better than one for the serious business of last minute gift [Music] wrapping all of the toys that are broken and forgotten Santa has me pick up in a big basket and take to the land of lost and forgotten toys well none of the toys want to go there as you can surely imagine so Santa thought that if I came here and told you how the fairy Snow Queen first gave toys life that then you would appreciate them more and take better care of them for [Music] how much does it cost to fix these toys well I don't know honey I never gave her much thought toys are needed that's the important thing why I'm trying to think of a special gift you mean something for mother no something else sort of a riddle I have to figure it out by myself oh singing I'm singing look at me Santa I can sing too can sing musics me joy and [Music] happiness the Sunbeam food chopper slicer and Shredder blender and others from Pagan Germany the fur tree and the holly from England the bells and mistleto the OT the Christmas pudding and many [Music] [Music] carols [Applause] e [Music] [Music] oh we to be happy oh dear I'll be late this Christmas sure we agree to be changed santra we wouldn't want to make all the little children unhappy but before we do one last hug Last Hug Last Hug last hug One Last Kiss Santa Last Kiss Last Kiss last [Music] [Applause] [Music] kiss a conference a conference conference agreed agreed agreed and you my little brownie will Hereafter be called Snoopy that will be your job to check up on the dolls and record it was not until the 4th Century that the Church of Rome identified December 25th with the birth of Christ but once the date was officially set by Rome devoted missionaries carried it along with the gospel beyond the borders of the known world but suddenly you tear your thoughts away from the fascination of Nazareth as an ancient Arabic Town it is Christmas and your purpose in coming here is a special one and your eyes seek out some special signs of the holiday season in this town these signs may not be so visible to the Western eye [Music] oh what [Music] [Music] w [Music] a for [Applause] Merry Christmas D Merry Christmas B e e the early Christians were too absorbed in the Lord's emminent return to be much concerned about the date of his birth their rights were religious and austere and often grew out of the anci ient customs of their Homeland [Music] [Applause] [Music] w [Music] y I can play the piano too oh e come on Snoopy there's no time to lose let's put the toys in the sack this is Christmas Eve yes sir Santa yes sir and a good night to you and a merry Christmas too oh not yet Santa let me show you how I can [Music] March [Music] and the people to whom you give it might give the gift right back to you why would they give it back does that mean they wouldn't like the gift now now no more clues see if you can't solve the puzzle during the coming week all right girls that's all bye Mrs goodbye goodbye goodbye Mrs especially the little ones then they can all better understand why we observe Christmas but father how am I to stop my people from celebrating Ule and worshiping the fur tree don't worry gun to your people the fur tree and the Hol was over and in the days that followed no one outside the village knew about the song with the first hint of spring an organ mender from a village in the tiell came to obendorf the children knew that at last someone had come to fix the broken organ in their church and indeed it was not very long before the old craftsman had put the instrument into working order ready here I come I made it especially for you one for each of you a oh thank you darling thank you why they're beautiful oh this makes me very happy mama what's matter I I think I know the special gift Mrs how was talking about his path took him ever upward along the snowy slope above him was the forest dark against the gleaming snow from below came the faint and musical sounds of a mountain stream with the ability to come to life for one hour every night at 12:00 oh thank you fairy Snow Queen look say hi guys bandes look bandages look he's got some weird things in here that's over there but not all Germanic tribes had the same tradition those that settled in the British Isles celebrated the beginning of the new year late in December modra night mother's night they called it and sacrifice to their gods under the n from tent to tent from one German tribe to another the Ule tree and Holly turned into the Christmas tree and the Christmas holly and never can you very in a little while the camer it was night when father Moore started back to the Village in the Moonlight the mountain slope lay still and calm it was a beautiful night a Holy Night all right to find peace and forgiving and receiving forgiveness it is man's answer to his need for love that is why Christmas is a living holiday [Laughter] [Applause] inhabitants of this area will tell you that Wadi hamam between those Hills was the very road which Jesus [Applause] Took [Music] a [Music] a no cream and I ought not to be treated like this I should teach Santa a lesson something like a good joke oh wonderful besides it will give me something to do and there's certainly no harm in a tiny little joke let's see what I could do what a funny looking little doll where did you get all these things you us into your hospital s brought them this morning oh don't tell me and what seems to be the trouble with the patient just had a baby oh well have about taking that off her eyes my who is it me daddy open up will you Honey hi Daddy heading me into the living room will you Sandy you look so funny daddy look's at all the packages I'll tell you in a minute honey wait till I get this stuff un loaded pH I thought for a minute there I wasn't going to make it guess I should have made two trips are all these presents still Adam what in the world have you been doing buying out a store from somewhere near Constantinople came St Nicholas better known as Santa Claus from Holland the Christmas stockings by the fireplace and from northern Europe the Jingle Bells and the [Applause] reindeer and so truly our Christmas is a celebration of the Brotherhood of Man growing out of his urge to why now this is an old custom of my people a good custom the ancient custom commemorated the return of light to Jehovah's Temple which the Heathen Invaders had thrown into darkness since then the people of Galilee had celebrated the eve of the 25th day of the month of Kish e come on Emma hurry up and open up your present wait a minute give me time to get this ribbon off of here Nelly from John to Emma a silx coffee maker John how much did you pay for that four F am old girl oh $298 would have been plenty that's better than the damage po you got for 98 cents of Li it e of the first Christmas and the same story will be told again in the Christmas Eve service in the church but on this afternoon the door of the church stands open and all is still inside the choir Master France Gruber has discovered that the organ [Music] change them back very Snow Queen before something terrible happens to them they may get hurt or fall in love Joan thinks Jerry is a good Woodsman What a fine Christmas tree just the right size for the Johnson living room and just the right size for the Leed Jerry is brought along a rope to hold the tree on the sled I wonder how it would be if if of course I grant all these toys life oh this will be a wonderful joke and besides for e bye Howard goodbye [Music] [Music] see who that is honey okay Mom for back in the woods Jerry knows just where there is a nice little Christmas tree Joan likes it very much the organ mener listen and [Applause] [Music] [Applause] remember all the way back to his own village the organ mender thought of the lovely words and simple [Music] m [Music] la for that I don't want to see you disappointed don't you worry about me boy I will't be disappointed they say if you're good Santa Claus will bring you what you asked for well I've been real good and all I'm asking for is a few minutes visit with him so I can se but no one has ever that's why I want to then I'll have something for Christmas no one else has here Jerry likes the spruce tree Jane likes the Tall Pine with long needles Jerry Jane and Mr Frank settle on this one is broken he will not be able to play and father Moore will have no mute for his Christmas Eve service and what would Christmas Eve be without music in the church the problem was one for father Moore but he was not here he had gone away to visit a family in a mountain cabin as he walked along his thoughts were on the preparation for the coming of Christmas [Music] [Applause] [Music] he stuck she's stuck she's stuck for Jonas blessed be the name of Jesus sit down what brings you here this day my son my granddaughter's just gone to the well for water well wait I'd like to talk to you anyway what's troubling you you look worried well Jonas it's hard to be a Roman soldier and a Christian right now the barracks are shaken with Pagan celebrations [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh all of us have reading problems of one kind or another here's a boy who reads so slow case is similar to hundreds of others suppose we call him Peter this girl's problem is that she reads too fast to understand what she is reading and there are a lot of people who have similar problems let's call this girl John [Music] [Music] [Music] to do with him either looks like the most important things are things we can't see now you've got the idea you won't be needing me anymore yeah away from the banks of the Nile for rain is scanty on the desert and OAS is with with reliable Water Supplies are widely scattered there are no year round tributaries to the Nile below Aswan most of Egypt's water must come from the river Where the River Flows there is a green and fertile belt where dat merged with our heritage and became part of the Christmas celebration as we know it today so truly composed of gifts from many lands from ancient Rome the custom of celebrating and giving presents from Palestine the story of the nativity the Christmas lights and the time of the feast who wrote this beloved song where did it come from for the answer we must go to Europe it was here in Austria in the little village of obendorf that the song was written if we should go there today oh they certainly are listen someone's Hing why it's a musical doll who sing for [Music] us at me [Music] [Applause] [Music] say watch [Music] this I know oh dear oh dear we don't want to be just toys we don't want to we don't want to we don't want to we don't want to be just toys just just toys just toys just toys that's it that's why my magic wouldn't work you see sander as a fairy Snow Queen my powers are limited I can only change things that want to be changed the toys wanted to be made alive but they do not want to be turned back to to AG I'll tell my brownies to unhitch the Christmas sled they will not be any toys tomorrow Christmas morning which is usually the happiest day of the year will now be known as the saddest no toys my my for some Years the song was known only in such Villages t away in The Snug valleys of the AL but finally it found its way to St Peter's Abbey in Saltsburg and from the city of Saltsburg in Austria the song was eventually carried to other places in Europe e she would take away all of my magic power for 400 Christmases I have played a joke on you Santa and now I've lost my magic oh dear oh that's too bad F Snow Queen but what shall I do I have no toy used to give the children for Christmas then let the berry Snow Queen change you back it's not easy being alive why you're so tiny how would you get along with no little boy or girl to look after you what will become of you toy soldier you can only March now but if you belong to some little boy he would put you with a lot of other soldiers he would really now strip now wait a minute strip listen listen to me I was cutting out my daughter's Christmas program dress e W is that's why oh that's no reason it's reason enough for everybody else well it's not reason enough for me seeing is believing and if I can't see a thing I won't believe it not even Santa Claus especially Santa Claus if he doesn't come here to visit me in person I won't have anything to do with it or Christmas or anything yes something ought to be done and something was done the England of Elizabeth the England of dancing and joyful Court balls soon fell under the sway of the Puritans the Puritan legislature decreed this day here in the new world the Puritans kept the ban on Christmas celebrations alive for many years and thus the general court of the colony of Massachusetts proclaimed in 1659 here ye here ye whosoever shall be found observing any such day as Christmas or the like for e [Music] [Music] [Music] I'm still lots of fun even though you have new Christmas [Music] toys sure oh don't worry Sanda look out look out look out you stay in your box can't stop can't stop can't [Music] stop oh to walk we Jesus Christ is to and as people from many lands came streaming to our Shores in search of Freedom they brought with them their Christmas songs and their customs and now a Christmas message from space showing concern for people everywhere the Skyland fre crew we wish to extend to people around the world the message of these Good Will and human understanding com from a church small town in America for nearly 150 years in many parts of the world people have been singing this carol it is the song we call Silent Night one is a father Moore The Village priest who wrote the words of the song his friend was France guber the teacher and choir master who composed the music of Silent Night for the story of the two men and the song they wrote we must go back a long time I've come to have my sugar cookie with you Santa Santa Santa Claus Merry Christmas why I bet that old sugar cookie isn't even up there for I know all about you little boys and girls I know the ones that ate their breakfast and those who put away their toys which brings me to the reason why Santa set me here to talk to you from what I see and from what we hear way up in Toyland a lot of the toys that Santa and his brownies have worked so hard to make get broken and lost and left out in the rain you see I have another job [Music] too hooray who wants to go to a suffer Park you do Chuck huh who are you we're looking into the future Chuck I am the young man you are going to be in a few short years well if you say so and take it from me when we're my age we won't be turning down in [Music] invitation [Music] let's all try and sing together while Starlight fills the [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] sky a special purchase is made for a festive table well there they are all ready to go oh I just can't believe it they look like new you've done a wonderful job Phil I had a good helper oh they'll make a lot of children happy that reminds me I have to call the committee and see if they have any new names and addresses to add to my cookie list did you put down uh 127 Walnut Street that's our address daddy oh pardon me we better get those but you better hurry then she's only got two more days to do it and um you say 195 cookies no 196 and you stay out of them [Music] England when the ger Prince Albert married British Queen Victoria he introduced the Christmas tree to the British Court the English people were quick to accept this colorful custom and soon it spread to America from England immigrants also brought their carols with them e called the Feast of nativity is to be kept as a fast with solemn humiliation calling to remembrance our sins and the sins of our forefathers business will be done and the people will no longer observe this sinful so-called Christmas while the Puritan rule against Christmas officially lasted only 12 years in England for mean eternal life because they're always green yes and Christ means eternal life too so let them bring in their fur tree let them decorate it and then we'll all pray under it to the good Lord as the true Giver of all abundance listen I think I hear them coming with the tree now for all right I'll go fly my kite wait a minute what makes a kite fly the wind and can you see the wind oh oh well I'll have some warm milk and go to bed hold up what now and all about him was the quiet beauty of God's world it was evening when he reached the house at the door he received a warm and friendly welcome lonely me you bet anyone would be lonely who only believed what he saw well let's go play with my electric train you can't why not what makes an electric train run electricity can you see electricity no then you can't have anything to do with it you you said so yourself and to the small town today Silent Night is a song that belongs to everyone [Music] oh our friendship a true embodiment of peace on Earth Good Will to [Music] men now he said to the choir Master you try it and so France grber sat down and began to play the Christmas song he had written some weeks [Music] before P the turkey not thank you thank you Bara you want a little turkey this Christmas Day did you get a lot of presents Barbara AR we do have some tury please how are you my my Christmas present I hear Alice is getting a Bund from is that [Music] difference [Music] Chris what warms milk the stove and I can see that oh no it's heat that warms milk and you can't see heat so gee you don't leave me much to do I might as well go back to bed good night e [Music] a [Music] h for his long fast Journey now on this this certain Christmas Eve that I am telling you about Santa had asked the fairy Snow Queen oh dear fairy Snow Queen said Santa won't you come have a sugar cookie and a cup of hot tea with me a cup of hot tea cried the fairy Snow Queen and you're welcome Santa now what shall I find to do good night Santa it was fun oh well [Applause] oh [Music] dear [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh here he puts the finishing touches on his Christmas tree with temper of paint he wants to make the stars and twinkle so he cut shapes from bright colored foil smelly stuff on me I don't like but we want him to believe you I don't want you no please spot do you hear little sleigh bells oh my here he comes [Music] [Music] a [Music] a but stri it isn't Christmas because you believe in Santa Claus it's Santa Claus because you believe in Christmas it's just spot who is it can I come in please please do I brought your suit want to eat candy and cookie sugar cookie sugar cookie sugar cookie [Music] e [Music] e [Music] [Music] n either by forbearing of Labor feasting or in any other way as a festival shall be find five Shillings [Music] he for some 200 years the more extreme Puritans fought against Christmas as a religious holiday by that time however [Music] he then shakes on colored glitter until it sticks on all sides of the [Music] wire four-year-old Jamie helps to finish the [Music] trimming e [Music] for [Applause] [Music] back in Nazareth the homes Spruce and fur are our favorite Christmas tree these trees and most other important conifers are evergreen that is their leaves persist for more than one season but not all kers are Evergreen in North America the Larch of the northern bogs and the bald Cyprus of Southeastern [Applause] swamps [Music] [Music] it's my let be fun for the truth is that most of our major institutions in a very short time have lost much of the hold they used to have on the minds and imaginations of Americans especially Young Americans blind obedience to any kind of Authority seems a thing of the remote past e father Mo thought of many things the child he had seen the beauty of the night but Christmas soon to come and so it was as some say that on his return to the Village father Moore wrote a poem the words seemed to come quickly and easily I'm this master the copper Smith of Syria made for you thank you too my faithful people and when the ceremony of the temple is over I shall return kindness with kindness and presence with presence and so 2,000 years ago the months of the winter solstice became a season of peace on Earth a time of goodwi in the Roman World tapers burning in front of the friendly Idol signal that during Saturn's and when at last he reached the hill overlooking his own village and some children came to meet him he taught them the song he had learned down the hill ran the children and with them went the song Silent Night for surprises who conjure up fantasies of a giant tree glittering with lights and tinsel planted in an acre of bright new toys and so later when the children are in bed sleeping fitfully to be sure the the scene is set the [Music] B this is a different Nazareth from the one which you saw during the week there is no bustle of the marketplace but a quiet holiday [Music] feeling everyone is dressed in their finest [Music] clothes [Music] [Music] oh that was fine musical doll Now fairy Snow Queen you'd better change the toys back so I can put them in my sack well you've got your train young fell you can drive anywhere you want to California south satet or Timbuktu so take her away Johnny you're Casey Jones [Music] III which is our December as the beginning of the Festival of Lights as the gospel spread and gave new meaning to the Greek and Roman culture so did these lights gain new significance Christianity came to signify light to those who thirsted for faith hope and salvation Magic power you mean you can't change them back no jingle bell jingle all the way way way but why fairy Snow Queen why well sander the queen of the fairies told me that if I didn't stop playing jokes for Christmas in Nazareth is a far cry from the bustling commercialism which we know the holiday is celebrated in a simple way trees and branches are brought in from the neighboring Hills for de ation for the home that's all right you want to help me put up the Christmas decorations you're not mad at me of course not you're not mad at me of course not a you're fortunate to have Mrs Howard as a teacher I know we have so much fun in our class now we'll give these 10 minutes I don't want them to burn mom yeah got me how much does it cost to make these cookies every year honey I never really come the C I don't know why do you ask I'm trying to figure out something last week in church Mrs Howard was talking about a gift she didn't say what e remember Julius you don't have to be afraid to be gay as long as you are true to the Lord the pagans Are Burning Lights in the streets because they fear the dark you you have found your light in the Star of Bethlehem but why why are you burning papers in your window I know that you're a good Christian Jonas and I don't quite understand e the Salvation Army wishes you a happy and holy Christmas for a child Christmas may be the happiest day of his life or the most tragic one poverty May prevent happiness well we're nearly through trimin this Christmas tree I think it looks better than last year yes I think it does too wait look kids see this wonderful very wonderful how some of those do those will be very fine very fine inde [Applause] [Music] D it is Christmas Eve The Melody of A Christmas Carol fills the full night in the village in [Applause] Europe it is Christmas Eve the same song [Music] [Music] oh my what a breed for members of the Armed Forces who can't be home the Salvation Army offers the next best thing a home away from home Christmas time is family time the Salvation Army enables poor families to have their Christmas dinners together a spicy bouquet oldfashioned spices and contemporary gity what a marvelous combination you'll know it's a fruity blend if it has the warm Lush mellow scent of sun-ripened fruit and finally the modern type it's dry and Brilliant sophisticated and subtle and there's an elusive top note frequently a floral one carrying with them a painting of Mary and Joseph boys representing the Shepherds of Bethlehem come to the houses caroling they are collecting Gifts of food for the poor the story they tell in song is one that never loses interest for it is the story my name's Snoopy Santa Claus calls me Snoopy because I Snoop I worked for Santa Claus I used to make toys like all the other little brownies but that was when I was much younger now Santa has a special job for me all right Santa now toys be as Santa made you toys I said be as you were what's the matter fairy Snow Queen why do not the toys change look they're still the same is this another one of your jokes most people had accepted it as a social as well as a church Festival because of the close kinship to England in language and tradition English Christmas Customs continued to cross to the new world Small Wonder that even the German Christmas tree came to America by and Hereafter all music dolls will wear gold pins in remembrance of the two toys who fell in love how nice how sweet what fun and now very Snow Queen I believe we're ready now may all the toys be as hand made you silent night holy night even as he wrote the priest wondered whether the poem could be set to music father Moore decided to take it to France grber the two friends priests and school teachers talked it over together the school teacher began to read there I think you have it how do you like it isn't that beautiful oh you've done such a wonderful job I'm glad you girls decided to work on this project you know this is more than just pieces of cardboard that have been cut out and put here this nativity scene will remind us of a a wonderful event the birth of Jesus [Music] [Music] the spread of indigenous art has its conspicuous Champions like Julia codesido who loves her people and the works of their hands through her own painting she perpetuates their customs and their strong and there before him lay a baby with his mother perhaps as he watched father Moore may have thought of another child the Christ child lying in the [Music] manger Let's Take a Ride it's all dark in this [Music] shoe hey looks like I lost I help her tonight well you can't have her all the time I need it sometimes too you know I promise Mom would help her make some Christmas cookies but I'll be done pretty soon oh okay you go right ahead but if you need anyone to test those cookies I'll be in the basement okay Christmas is a wonderful time isn't it it's even better than it was when I was as this of course but indelible in Boyhood [Music] [Applause] memory poor stri I'm afraid he's going to be awfully disappointed you said it yes he couldn't be be satisfied with some toys no he's got to be different I feel just like I'm talking to myself you are here I'll move over so you can see me it's simple in the second grade Gregory will apply it to more complex words he will continue to use structural analysis all through life he will use it in identifying words composed of root prefixes and suffixes the problems of word recognition are complex no one approach for just that you wanted to see Santa Claus and nobody in this whole country ever saw Santa Claus not really and I didn't want you to stop St believing in him look I'll give you whatever Santa Claus brings me this year next year too right are you very mad at me go away I'm [Music] sorry [Music] [Music] a for coffee maybe H um are are you warm enough have you had a nice trip oh um it was wonderful of you to come Santa uh how long can you how long can you stay oh you're not going right now but it wasn't very much for for all Romans were free and equal in homes all over Rome children were making clay dolls to commemorate Saturn's love for his human children and wherever the Roman empire spread the Festival of Saturn followed merging with customs of other people becoming a sort of Christmas long before Christ was born then according to [Applause] [Applause] [Music] prophecy [Applause] [Music] o here from the classic past is a foreshadowing of the spirit of Christmas the time is 2,000 years ago the place Rome the day December 17th of our calendar the first day of the Festival of Saturn the oldest of [Music] hello gadgets contributing to man's convenience multiply around [Music] him but despite all the mechanisms he has invented in his pursuit of personal happiness man is finding existence in the modern world full of for go to sleep children and tomorrow we'll see what Sanda has left good night good night good night sleep tight don't let any bed bu good night good night good night good night a visit you don't say very much do you I thought you would at least wish me a merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry [Music] Christmas [Music] [Music] and of course two heads are better than one for the serious business of last minute gift wrapping [Music] all of the toys that are broken and forgotten Santa has me pick up in a big basket and take to the land of lost and forgotten toys well none of the toys want to go there as you can surely imagine so Santa thought that if I came here and told you how the fairy Snow Queen first gave toys life that then you would appreciate them more and take better care of them e for [Music] how much does it cost to fix these toys oh I don't know honey I never gave her much thought toys are needed that's the important thing why I'm trying to think of a special gift you mean something for mother no something else sort of a riddle I have I have to figure it out by myself oh singing I'm singing look at me Santa I can sing too look at s music fills me with joy and [Music] happiness the Sunbeam food chopper slicer and Shredder blender and others from Pagan Germany the fur tree and the Holly from England the bells and mistleto the U log the Christmas pudding and many [Music] [Applause] carols hello everybody Merry Christmas um I hope you enjoyed the uh blenders programming of all
