it's hi everybody this is Skip Alzheimer and welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and sometimes eat lunch sometimes just talk about what we're seeing try to process it together um I am not in the archive today I just did a show last night in Portland Oregon at the Clinton Street Theater what you might know about um it is the theater that has had the longest running Rocky Horror Picture Show um screenings and I had not done a show there for like 20 years so we did a show and it was great uh it was a lot of fun I got some photos uh this is me you see my film strip projector there so we did a film strip where the audience read um and of course I talked about films and the show I did was uh uh called now I know why you're scared and there were films made for children that weren't really supposed to be shown to Children uh or shouldn't have been shown to Children um there's also I got to meet a fan somebody who has been on the uh chats in the comments this is Stuart uh and Stewart uh showed up and uh it was great to get a picture with him so um yeah it was a lot of fun and if you happen to be in San Francisco I'm going to be doing the same show on Monday and then I'm also doing a show at Exploratorium where I'm showing a film a year 1999 A.D and we're talking about it um so that'll be fun uh so we had our next um round of picks for the toe tapping tournament and uh there were some upsets I think uh let's see I hope you can see this um so fast food got defeated very it was a very close competition by people working with data and the zip code song trounced the uh for the food group song from the film good eating um and keep the promise also trounced I'm mad at you and uh seen through commercials the Lip Smacker song got beat by run for your life so the next thing that we'll be voting on will be people working with data versus the ZIP code song and keep the promise versus run for your life um many of you wrote me at Skip avgeeks.com and said that it was getting really hard and that tells me that there were some good uh candidates there that it was difficult to vote on um one person said I don't like any of these songs so that was kind of hilarious anyway so today's a pre-recorded show as I said um as we are going to be traveling south and this uh is films about cats and we're gonna start off um with three films that are all silent so I kind of added some old 78s from the internet archive that will hopefully not ding me on YouTube but uh one of them is a silent film whole movie footage called uh Camden cats and I think the family was named Condon and there's a really interesting title at the beginning uh the second film is a Felix the Cat cartoon the third film is a film strip called uh I believe it's Kathy's cat and uh you can read along at home uh then what else are we watching wow I suddenly had forgotten what I'm showing you um see the next film is I think it's uh it's a cat's life though it's made by Emily frith who is an educational filmmaker from the 50s a female educational filmmaker the next film is a mother cat and her skunks it's about a cat that raises skunks as her own [Music] um and let's see what else we got there is a lot of stuff about cats um what is this film this is you'd think I'd be better prepared when you um kittens birth and growth so it's all about uh kittens and taking care of them and we learn a little some life lessons and then finally we're going to end with uh a film called black and white kitten that features uh puppets and kind of some scary puppets I think this is a British production that was released by Centron so um lots of entertainment about cats and so um enjoy the show and if you like what you saw you can hit the thumbs up button you can you [Music] thank you [Music] thank you [Music] thank you [Music] fluffy and Tommy are beautiful cats Tommy is a chinchilla Persian with long silver gray hair he has a sturdy build intelligent head and ears placed far apart the points of a good cat fluffy has pretty black and White markings and is half Persian she is large because it is nearly time for her to have her kittens the two cats play together every day and eat from the same dish cats like meat especially liver and fish and canned cat food and of course they often catch mice and gophers cats are useful in keeping rats and mice away from homes and barns fluffy likes to sit quietly in the woods looking for mice now where did she go a cat carries her kittens for 63 days before they are born fluffy keeps herself clean cats know how to care for themselves and all they really need from us is water food and affection the day finally arrives and fluffy has six new kittens and they look very much like their father Tommy she takes good care of them and barely leaves them long enough to eat fill lifts snowball and holds him very carefully they cause small kittens must not be handled snowball's eyes will not be open until he is 10 or 14 days old fluffy keeps her kittens in a box in the basement there is a soft pad in the Box Sunshine is too warm and the kittens can only stay out of the cool basement for a short time they are unhappy and try to get out of the box fluffy hears them crying and moves them one by one to the shade she picks them up by the loose skin at the back of the neck however only tiny kittens should be lifted this way later they need more support back she comes for smoking but where is he outside the box she will return until each one is in the shade time now to take them all back to the basement around Fluffy's sister has kittens that are five weeks old Diana likes to cuddle The Lovable kittens each one is different she tries to gather the five little kittens together but they Scamper away Tuffy has a scar on his face and is the most adventurous Smokey is the most gentle and Blacky the most timid Teddy teaches the younger children how to care for the kittens Calico the father cat likes to have his ears rubbed Diana and Teddy are amused over the antics of the kittens children and kittens have been Playmates for hundreds of years Calico and Muffy are strong cats with good dispositions and have fine kittens Diana puts the kittens in their box but they soon crawl out timid Blackie is the last [Music] Ronnie is only four years old and is learning how to care for the kittens and dogs he holds Smokey under his knee he doesn't hurt her but she tries hard to get out up she comes patches and spots are just the right dogs for a little boy dogs and cats are good friends when they're brought up together spot is as kind to the kittens as their mother and the kittens often cuddle up to her and go to sleep spot watches to see what the kittens will do next the kittens are old enough to go exploring and Tuffy wanders over to the chicken yard the big rooster crows right in Tuffy's face the little kitten returns to his mother and the other kittens they have played long enough and Muffy takes them back to the house in case of danger she and the kittens are more secure near the house from the time they are little she trains them sometimes she's rough but the little ones understand she makes sure that each kitten nurses and she shows them how to keep clean toffee needs extra scrubbing cats are clean both in taking care of themselves and in the house Muffy is tired too and takes a nap with her kittens soon the kittens are rested and ready to play again their emotions are quick and graceful you wouldn't think an old rake and Spade could be so entertaining kittens learn to protect themselves when they are very young because they will often need to know how kittens should not be taken from their mother until they are six weeks old kittens like these and lions and tigers all belong to the cat family cats can climb trees catch rats and defend themselves against animals much larger than they are the kittens play peekaboo around the handle as the kittens grow older they need additional food Teddy brings a bowl of milk and the kittens learn to drink from the bowl a mother cat too needs plenty of nourishing food when she is nursing her kittens spot two is hungry but she knows she must not bother Muffy until she is finished a cat can be crossed when she protects her kittens nothing to do but wait cats demand so little water good food a clean dry place to sleep exercise and care [Music] thank you now spot can drink is there anything more fun than a family of little kittens [Music] thank you hahaha [Music] on a farm out in the country there lived a mother cat Rex the farm dog lived there too [Music] mother cat had a Cozy home in a big box for her new kittens [Music] Rex often went to the box to watch the kittens play [Music] we're a happy mother cat took good care of them all this Farm was a pleasant place to live one day when it was sunny and warm in the box and the kittens were well groomed and fed mother cat jumped out of her box to go to the forest nearby to look for mice mother cat liked to go to the forest hunting mice the forest was quite different from the farm the opossum lived in the forest and the porcupine hunted for his food there a mother Fox was looking for her food but her baby fox was just having fun the owl had been hunting all night and was now ready for a nap but the hawk was hungry he was looking for food down below he saw three baby skunks all alone they had lost their mother the day before what a good breakfast for a hungry Hawk when a hawk gets hungry he looks for small animals to eat babies skunks for instance but a mother cat was too big for him could she help the baby skunks could she save them from the hawk [Music] mother cat had never seen baby skunks before but somehow she sensed that they were hungry and frightened so she tried to pick one up by the neck the way cats carry their own babies up there the hawk was waiting for mother cat to give up but mother cat tried again and again maybe they'd follow her she'll either way to her home where they would be safe [Music] cut was so much like their own mother that the baby skunks followed her all the way home and so it happened that three baby skunks came to live on the farm with a mother cat they were hungry too it was so good to have warm mother's milk again thank you puff was not quite sure whether he liked the new family [Music] but mother cat liked them all she had enough milk for everyone after dinner mother cat gave the whole family a good scrubbing she licked a little skunks to get them clean [Music] and she licked the kittens especially Puff her own kittens and her adopted babies got the same Loving Care [Music] they were brothers and sisters now so the little kittens made friends with the baby skunks when their stomachs were full and they'd all had the bath they settled down for a nice long nap [Music] after the nap they were ready for play at first they were a bit quiet and shy [Music] mother cat watched patiently while they began to get acquainted they soon learned a lot about each other how they smelled and how they looked about this time Rex's fine nose had detected a new scent so he came to investigate [Music] the cat and her new family the new members of her family certainly didn't look like kittens but if mother cat liked them Rex would be friendly and treat them all alike please quickly they grew older Blackie was the first to climb out of the box it took Sandy a little longer to get out because his legs were not very strong yet but he made it one of the baby skunks quickly learned that he could climb two puff tried several times but he had to practice some more and grow a little before he would be able to get out by himself [Music] one day some time later while mother cat had taken her kittens out for a tree climbing lesson the little skunks remained alone in their box soon they got tired of playing alone one by one they wandered out of their box [Music] they strolled across the yard it's the watchdog and out onto the dirt road in a short while the three baby skunks found themselves in the forest the forest is the real home of skunks it seems such a fine place to play so much bigger than the barnyard [Music] in the barnyard they had never seen the brook and they had not learned an important lesson for all Forest creatures to be always on the alert it was the Sleepy Owl would he harm them not if he had had his dinner the baby skunks knew nothing about the danger of the forest [Music] merrily one of them ventured out into the water the Rocks were slippery and the baby skunk slid off he got his tail wet and he got his feet wet but he didn't seem to care soon he led the way for a new adventure he found plants and leaves that he had never seen before the baby skunk spotted a baby fox and the fox spotted the skunk perhaps he would like to play but no he ran away so the little skunk went back to find his brothers meanwhile mother cat and Rex were back at the farm the baby skunks had gone away mother cat saw the hawk flying overhead rexar too mother cat hurried off to look for her little ones who were having such a good time they didn't look up to see the hungry Hawk mother cat hurried her young ones were in danger what a good meal one of the little skunks would make for a hungry Hawk [Music] mother cat looked and looked her little skunks couldn't beat too far away she had to find them all the hawk would surely swoop down the owl seemed to be waiting to see who would win this time mother cat turned toward the brook and out there she found her naughty little baby skunks they had been naughty they'd gone a long way from the Barnyard when they were still too small to take care of themselves the hawk was very very angry he had lost a good meal again [Music] once more mother cat led the way home this time the little skunks followed her readily they were glad to be back in the barnyard soon the whole family was together again it was a proud and happy family where two different kinds of young animals found love in the same home to mother cat it really didn't matter whether the babies were kittens or skunks she took good care of them all me [Music] [Music] [Music] Robin and Billy are hurrying home from school for a very special reason during the last few days they have been eager to get home to see their mother catley he is going to have kittens at any time and the children hope to be present when they are born the children ask their mother if anything has happened they mark off a calendar mother made for them it takes about 60 days or about two months before kittens are born children fold and place a soft blanket in a box for Millie that night father is reading a story to the children before bedtime Millie has been Restless all evening but she has settled before the fire to enjoy its warmth and to be near the family mother calls it's bedtime the children leave and so does Millie come quickly Millie is having a kitten children hurry Phillips Billy the touch hurry up a white kitten has already been born Millie is now having a black one see how Millie cleans her babies by the way Millie's sides move in and out you know that another kitten will be born as soon as a kitten is born it can crawl mother keeps a record of the kittens as they are born one white two blacks a little black one is already hunting for a place to nurse look their white kitten is being born see how Millie cleans her kitten two whites two blacks four kittens in all Robin thinks funny Billy says like baby chicks he saw hatch kittens are nursing contentedly since Millie's sides have stopped moving they think she has had all her babies Robin and Billy leave for bed five days have passed the kittens are dry and fluffy they have grown larger more than double in size but their ears are still flat not pointed like cats ears Lily is a good mother she leaves her kittens only for a few minutes to eat or to go outdoor the kitten's eyes are closed tight they cannot see Millie comes when she hears them cry [Music] she washes her babies with her rough tongue and keeps them clean the kittens drink their mother's warm milk 10 days old today the kitten's eyes are opening in a few more days their eyes will be completely open the children handle the kittens gently and not too often see how carefully Billy is holding the white kitten one afternoon when the kittens are about three weeks old Robin and Billy hear a loud mewing go to the kitchen look one is falling out of the box Billy wants to help but Robin stops him wait and see what Millie does Millie lifts her kitten carefully by the back of the neck she puts it in the Box [Music] Robin says they need a larger carton mother brings a new box the children are very wise they use both hands to pick up the kittens only a mother cat knows just how to lift a little kitten by the back of the neck when the kittens are one month old the children take them out of doors on Warm Spring days the kittens are curious about many things the grass and the bugs the string that swings and most of all they are curious about Mother's sewing box Robin wonders if they're ready to drink cow's milk not yet during the warm spring days the kittens play on the porch they are curious about paper bags and shadows and strings and many other kinds of things Billy watches her family play by the time the kittens are five weeks old Millie has taught her family to laugh up milk a how they enjoy it the little gray one doesn't want to stop the white one washes his face after he eats he keeps his whiskers clean the other white kitten finishes the milk and washes his face and now for a cozy nap the kittens have watched mother eat meat for many days finally when their teeth are strong enough the kittens begin to eat meat mmm it's good until this time Millie has fed her babies and kept them clean now they can drink cow's milk and eat meat they no longer need their mother's milk this is called weaning now that the kittens are weaned they must learn to use a sandbox mother pours sand into a small carton they are curious about the new box at first the kittens think it is a play thing oh they romp and play in a few days they will learn to use it properly kittens are very neat and clean Millie's family has grown the kittens are two months old they no longer need their mother Robin and Billy have talked to the mothers and fathers of their Playmates they have found good homes for each kitten the children hate to say goodbye to their blue-eyed kitten with his point of ears [Music] finally they are in the carry-on [Music] goodbye says mother as the children leave to deliver them to their new homes [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] by the waving trees if you come to the forest we shall tell you some stories that are blown from the Treetops on a Summer Breeze [Music] in the forest [Music] I wish Katie could speak to us hoppy and tell us where she came from she's too young to talk squeaker all she can say is meow at least she's drunk a lot of milk but what do kittens like to eat kittens like tasty bits of fish to eat surely you know that fish but I can't catch fish neither can I but I know someone who can catch fish for Katie Kenneth Kingfisher he lives just up the street a kingfisher in well let's go and ask him the professor could look after Katie while we're away I don't belong though I've never looked after a baby kitten before we won't see you soon professor be a professor babysitting whatever next oh dear Kate is waking up what do I do now [Music] I know I'll sing her a lullaby battle Center back to sleep again [Music] I'm here to watch over you so sleep safe [Music] and [Music] I sleep tight if allocate as quiet stream snug lucky baby cat perhaps [Music] thank you guys I feel drowsy myself but I must keep awake I really must keep awake foreign [Music] grasshoppers what happened look at our best clothes squeaker all over the grass where's this kitten you were telling me about I wish I knew Kim Professor Hooter was looking after her he's sound asleep oh no weapons uh what happened have happened where nothing's happened I've been babysitting good gracious it's gone whilst you were asleep Professor look at our clothes and that's built milk I only shut my eyes for a moment squeaker I will never mind but we must find Katie quickly and we'll start to the Garden you look over there hoppy and Ken you try over there and I'll hunt around here how stupid of me my own lullaby simply to sleep I'll never forgive myself if anything happens to Katie Katie kitten where are you where are you Katie [Music] you're a kitty kitty here kitty we got some lovely fish for you Katie you naughty kitten what have you got to oh Hillary have you seen Katie kitten we've lost her sorry squeaker I haven't I've been digging tunnels all day it was just going home to put the catalog for tea please ah Henry have you seen Katie anywhere she's lost that's bad news How big no I haven't seen her I've been waiting in the Stream since lunchtime Debbie told my fault oh why did I fall asleep I'm such a stupid old owl no squeaker she's vanished let's look in the house right let's go [Music] never babysit again or sing another lullaby I'm such a twit of an old owl that poor little kitten I wonder what's happened to her that's funny why won't my stove light little right yesterday [Music] I was so looking forward to a cup of tea [Music] oh I think something's stuck at the chimney oh well I'd have to tell the others they can't have any tea today well Katie's not in the house let's have a meeting in the garden and decide what to do next shall we good idea perhaps Professor Huda can think of something he's a clever old cat yes but he may be too upset to think at the moment foreign [Music] there's only one thing for it we'll have to search the woods inch by inch until we find Katie but that could take days I don't care if it takes weeks we've got to find her somehow hello everybody any sign of Katie kitten not a trace I'm sorry to hear that I'm sorry I can't offer you a cup of tea I can't light my stove to boil the kettle I think something must be blocking up the chimney pity I could do with a nice cup of tea just a moment Hillary what did you say I said there's something stuck in my chimney I can't light the stove to boil the kettle that something could be Katie quick let's find out [Music] it's Katie all right but how do we get her out of there first we must think we'll need a rope and we'll have to make a crane to lift her out right professor build it don't be frightened we'll soon have you out of there [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] when I tell you you all pull together on the Rope [Music] ready and together again [Music] once more that's fine oh [Music] Heavens that's not Katie Katie's not black it's Katie all right but you look black if you'd been stuck in a city old chimney all this time oh you're right Professor anyway we don't care if Katie looks black or white as long as she's safe do we fellas of course not but she'll feel happier after a bath won't you Katie and after the nice fish supper I brought for you which I can now cook on my stove wow [Music] well it's getting late long past Katie's bedtime may we tell her nursery rhyme before she goes to bed Professor all right if you make it a short one right here goes cat pussycat where have you been you got stuck in a chimney but now you're all clean we'll see cat cat gave us a fright you were suddenly black instead of being white [Music] have you please learned if I lit my stove you might have got burnt because they got pussycat Nevermore astray we've been searching for you for most
