hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show uh we are not at the archive today because we are traveling it's going to wish my father a happy birthday uh and as we travel by car um it's uh it reminds me of some of the commercials that we've digitized in the past and uh we did this big project for Duke University in their ad viws archive and uh we digitized a bunch of AMC American Motors uh corporation uh ads and and also the company that was before them which was studabaker or Nash and uh so I figured I'd show you some of these um so Nash uh like I said they it was Nash Kelvinator and they made a bunch of cars uh the stbaker the Packard um and uh they merged with Hudson motorc car company um in 1954 and created American Motors and they American Motors then made the Nash Rambler The Hornet the gremlin the Pacer the Ambassador the rebel The Matador uh the Marlin the a MX a javelin and then of course they they took over Jeep for a while uh and they chugged away and this came to mind uh to me cuz when I was sick I was at home watching Price's right reruns and um you know they'd always say it's a new car and it was almost always an American Motors car and it was almost always a really crappy uh twood door um hatchback I was like oh oh you know people would be very excited but' be like oo yeah that car is not gonna last very long um and it's not definitely not very sexy but uh yeah so here's a bunch of commercials uh first from stud Baker in the ' 50s and then excuse me uh then American Motors uh up to the probably I think mid-60s um so I there might be some duplicates in there I try to go go in and pull out a bunch of them but what's interesting with AMC is that they were trying to take on the big three um Ford GM and Chrysler uh unfortunately and then they refer to themselves as like uh the Giant Killer um and it was hard because uh the big three had a lot more stuff they had a lot more manufacturing they had a lot more uh distrib rors uh dealerships and uh it was hard to compete um but and they eventually I think went out of business what was it in 85 88 that's a long run um and got acquired by one of the big three Chrysler so reflect fly I wish I had some uh Pacer or Gremlin ads those those are uh fascinating vehicles um but I think that the Ad Agency that was uh doing these ads bent and Bulls um stopped doing
