and I don't know I don't think they're related to the potato chip company but you know maybe they're kin um that was 1954 through 57 and that picnic I was like wow there's uh there's a bunny uh mom wish there were some lyrics though because boy that would be a great uh toet tapping tonate song and we are going to do a toet tapping tonate um probably do a day of it uh we won't extend it out we have some good candidates over the last year um anyways here's bambl with Hooves enjoy [Music] hoofed mammals don't look very much alike they come in all sorts of shapes and [Music] sizes [Music] and they live in a great many different kinds of places some are animals we may only see in zoos or out in the wild and many are among the most common of our domesticated animals but whatever their differences they all have the had one thing in common legs that end in hoofs a hoof forms at the end of a bone that supports the animal's weight in other words at the end of a toe it's made of keratin the same kind of material that forms Claws and fingernails a hippopotamus stands on four toes of each foot so each hippo foot has four hoofs but a rhino's foot doesn't a rhinoceros like some other hooped mammals stands on a different number not four a rhinoceros stands on three toes a pig tiptoes on two pigs actually have four toes but the outer ones are too short to touch the ground in a deer's foot the outer toes are even smaller a deer has what's called a clover hoof but it really isn't a single hoof that's been split in half those are two separate hoofs at the ends of two separate toes horses go them one better all the toes except for one are undeveloped which means that a horse stands on a single hoof that surrounds the end of its enlarged middle toe scientists group all these hoofed animals into two basic types those that have an odd number of toes like horses do and those that have an even number of toes like [Music] deer the Latin word for hoof angula gives us a name for both these groups of mammals they're called ulet ulates probably got their start around 60 million years ago with creatures that looked something like the modern-day mouse deer those ancient five toad mammals evolved into the odd Toad and the even toad ones of today of course there are many variations on these two themes sheep and goats that live in mountains don't usually slip off the Steep and rugged surfaces their hoofs are adapted for Mountain walking and jumping they have sharp edges the undersides are also curved they almost act like suction cups that hold the feet firmly on the hard surfaces without slipping the camel has cloven hoofs that are adapted for travel over Desert Sands because they're very broad they keep the camel from sinking into the [Music] sand the thick pads that cushion each hoof do the same job the two groups of hoofed animals have something else in common besides hoofs all of them are Plante eaters herbivores although they don't all eat the same plants or the same parts of plants horses are adapted to eat grass giraffes are able to eat tree leaves deer live on leaves of shrubs twigs and tree bark certain adaptations of the ulet help them get at Their Food Specialties some use their front teeth and lips to cut the food free from the rest of the [Music] plant jffs can do it with lips alone so can some of the other hoofed mammals now most plant food is difficult to digest so the hoofed mammals have to prepare it for digestion they chew like we do but their teeth are especially adapted for tough plant food the upper and lower teeth of the cow have flat rough surfaces that fit together with very little space between the cow moves its Jaw from side to side in a grinding motion something like a mortar in pessel these teeth are a very different adaptation from say the sharp cutting molers of the meat eating wolf or the broad front teeth of the porcupine which are used for gnawing but even with their special adaptations all hoofed animals have to eat a lot more food than meat eaters to get enough total energy to survive plants are less nourishing than meat and illet have to chew a lot more too they chew and swallow and bring up the swallowed food the cud and chew some more these plant eaters spend many more hours eating and chewing than than meat eaters do in fact the bigger illet spend most of their waking hours eating or looking for food most ulet are grazing or browsing animals as they finish with the food they prefer in one area they move to another and the more of them there are the faster the food supply disappears and the farther they have to range in the wild many hoofed animals are nomadic they have no fixed home but move over the land in groups in a constant search for plant food the group is usually very closely [Music] related often among the hoofed mammals the males compete for choice of the [Music] females [Music] their horns come in a remarkable variety of shapes and sizes and most but not all are formed from pretty much the same kind of material that forms the hoofs a hard keratin sheath over a bony core the elaborate antlers of deer however are made only of bone and the short horns of giraffes are bone with a skin covering in rhinos the horn is actually like compacted hair the animals can use their horns and antlers for defense against enemies but the best defense is just being part of the herd getting separated from the herd can mean serious trouble [Music] their highly developed senses of sight smell and hearing can warn them of danger and their speed can help them Escape it [Music] so these are the mammals with hoofs they work for us they provide [Music] food they even Supply raw materials for our clothing throughout history we have domesticated hoofed mammals and have come to appreciate them not only for their usefulness but for their beauty there is probably no group of animals more important to us today than the mammals with hoops [Music] n I just took a bite out of a sandwich Let's uh learn about farmers and fishermen of [Music] Norway in the northernmost part of Europe is the great Scandinavian Peninsula divided by a rugged mountain range on the western side lies Norway more than half of Norway is so Rocky and cold that NE the trees nor grass will grow although Norway is far to the North warm ocean currents keep its fs and hobbers clear of ice even in the coldest winters in the waters off the Norwegian Coast are shallow bases called fishing Banks which are some of the world's best fishing grounds swimming near the surface in groups or schools are caught each time the net is hauled in it is natural that the Norwegians should take this Rich Harvest from the sea to add to what they reap from the land many Norwegian farmers become fishermen in the winter months when the fishing is best and the farmlands are covered with snow while the captain steers the ship his for 14-year-old son lar learns what he can about fishing whenever he has a moment to spare from his many duties each member of the crew including Lars will share in the profits of The Season's fishing while some Norwegians fish the year round Lars and his father go to the banks only from January to April when little or no work can be done on the farm at sea for the first time Lars finds that he hasn't much time to himself for fishermen are hardworking and meals are served several times a day Norwegians catch more fish than they can eat and great quantities of cod hattic and Herring are dried or smoked and canned for export to other countries when its holes are filled the fishing boat heads for Port where it Herring will be sold navigation is difficult in the dark and foggy Winters lighthouses make it easier for ship captains to guide their vessels up the narrow fjords Norwegians are proud of the seafaring tradition which goes back to their adventurous Viking ancestors the northmen who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to North America 500 years before Columbus after working as cabin boys and deck hands on fishing boats many young men join the Norwegian Merchant Marine and work on ships which sail to almost all the ports of the world Bergen is Norway's main fishing port and second largest city scores of deep sea sea trollers and hundreds of smaller Herring boats from the fjords are tied up at the Docks near the Bergen Fish [Music] Market fish that are not sold as food are sent to factories to be made into oil and fertilizer Lars has often stopped at the Bergen fish Piers before but only long enough to unload the herring however this is the last trip of the season and he will have time to explore the city before going back to the farm most Norwegian boys whose homes are on farms or in small villages are not familiar with life in a busy modern city trains from other parts of Norway bring lumber paper and other wood products to be shipped abroad in exchange in the city Norwegians are reminded of the many fine things for which their countrymen are known all over the world Lars has often heard the choir of Bergen's old Cathedral broadcast his mother's favorite hymns on the radio to Norwegians the music of their great composer edod Greg is as much a part of Norway as the fjords and forests the mountains and lakes and the sea that pounds upon the rocky Coast Bergen like Norway's capital Oslo has grown with the nation's industry and commerce it has many upto-date stores filled with all kinds of merchandise much of it manufactured in England France and the United States when the money is made fishing during the winter Lars may buy something that a boy in a distant land help to make when the fish have all been unloaded and sold L's father heads North for the fishing boat's Home Port a little village on an island near the entrance to a fure after four winter months on the fishing Banks the docks are a welcome sight like the captain and Lars most of the fishermen who had been with them during the winter months are farmers who live nearby and until next Winter's fishing Begins the boat will be tied up while the men and their families work the land next year when Lars makes the trip to the banks he will be old enough to take his place on Deck with the fisherman although most of the crew are good friends at neighbors they will have little time to visit with each other during the busy summer along the Norwegian Coast Road building is difficult and expensive because of the Steep mountains hundreds of islands and the rivers and Furs to reach home 7 miles up the Deep y Lars and his father will travel by motor launch instead of by automobile or bus because there is no other way of getting there PS are the most characteristic feature of the Norwegian landscape ages ago tremendous masses of ice pushed their way down to the Sea scooping out deep valleys thousands of years later the ice melted and when the sea flowed in The Valleys became fjords the only land that can be farmed are the little Patches by The Fjord between the water and the cliffs Lars lives with his family on one of these small farms at the foot of a mountain its wooden buildings are more than 200 years old but as with many Norwegian Farms along the coast it is served TriCity generated by the power of Mountain Streams nearly every home has a telephone and L's mother has already heard that her husband and her son are on their way up the F L's younger sister and brother help their mother get ready for a joyous homecoming they all know that after a long trip at Sea Lars and his father are looking forward to a homecooked [Music] meal a neighbor across the F telephones to say that the launch is in sight and that the family must hurry if they expect to meet it everyone is slowed down by having to put on winter boots over house stockings for the Race Across the wet field on hundreds of farms up and down the fs of Norway the welcoming home of men folks by wives and children is a familiar sight in the early weeks of spring it is not the custom of Norwegians to greet loved ones by a kiss a firm handshake and friendly hug express the same affection L's mother has prepared the family's favorite meal beef and mutton with potato dumplings Norwegians have hearty appetites and during the long summer days ahead it will not be unusual for the family to eat as many as five meals a day as soon as he can Lars makes a tour of the farm he notices that the Winter's ice and snow have curled the old wood shingles and some of these will have to be to replace on the farm there are cows sheep one horse and a herd of goats during the next 3 or 4 months L's family must raise food to feed themselves and their animals throughout the whole year countries in high Northern latitudes have long summer days and crops grow quickly signs of spring on farm and Hillside mean that the short Norwegian growing season will soon begin melting snow and drenching rain have left the ground soggy not until the sun has dried out the soil can plowing begin water from snow melting in the mountains races down to the fs the power of falling water is one of Norway's most valuable natural resources and is called White coal because it is used instead of black coal to produce electricity on remote Farms water power drives the wheels of Mills and Machinery from Pine and Spruce Wood obtained in the forests which cover the lower slopes of the mountains L's father Cuts new shingles for repairing the bond roof most Norwegians are good Woodworkers able to construct anything from a house to a pair of skis the peaks of the highest mountains are covered with snow the year round even in late spring there is enough snow just a short climb from the farm for skiing the favorite sport of all Norway but skiing is more than a sport because the Deep snows make travel slow and difficult during the winter most Norwegians learn to ski when they are children as a result the country produces some of the world's best ski jumpers at Racers but on the farm there is little time for play now that the growing season has begun the small horse must plot along patiently until every bit of usable land has been prepared for planting the poor soil and the short cool growing season limit the choice of crops that can be raised potatoes are planted in the field which was used for oats last year by rotating crops in this manner Farmers strengthen the soil as with Farm amilies everywhere women and girls do the lighter work while the heavier jobs are handled by men and boys each family tries to get all it can out of its few acres and few animals wool gathered from the farmer's own sheep is spun into yarn for stockings and sweaters another of the many jobs is mending nets for the late spring salmon fishing in the fs L's little brother and sister go to school by boat in only a few minutes but it would take them many hours to make the trip Overland around the head of the Fjord children attend the school no more than half the year well besides getting the whole summer off to help on the farm they have a long vacation at Christmas arithmetic and spelling reading and writing are the principal subjects Norwegian children study but each child has also taught the geography of his country and its history from the early days of the Vikings they learn that in 195 the people of the Scandinavian Peninsula Who had lived together for nearly a 100 years under one king decided peacefully to separate into two countries Norway and [Music] Sweden one Sunday each month when the traveling Pastor makes his regular visit families go down the F to The Village Church [Music] they put on their best clothes for the occasion each region of Norway has its own traditional design for the National Dress while waiting for the services to begin the people have a chance to chat with their neighbors L's father tells about the Winter's fishing and discusses spring planting and prospects for the Summer's crops the wooden Church typical of thousands throughout the country was built by the congregation out of Timber from the nearby forests Norwegians are religious people who worship as plainly as they live when summer bursts forth in its brightest new clothes the day arrives for the children to start rounding up the farm animals L's father needs every inch of his valuable crop land for potatoes and other vegetables and the grass on the slopes near the farm must be saved for the hay on which his animals will feed next winter so Lars and his sisters take the Sheep the goats and the milk cows to another grazing place for the next four months life will be entirely different with the youngsters and animals away it's an important time in Norwegian Farm households when this Journey Begins the trail makes many twists and turns as it leads away from the farm on their way the young herders pass familiar landmarks and continue up the Steep Mountain Side higher and higher at last the children come in sight of their goal the grass land of the high slopes Mountain pastures in Norway are known as Cedar long summer days in the Cedar are cool and damp and though the soil is even thinner than the earth of the farmer Fields down below there is still plenty of fresh water for the animals to drink and sweet Mountain grass and leafy bushes for them to [Music] eat in the middle of the cedar is a small Hut where the children spend their nights during the summer from the high caters Farm children get get a view of their native land which enables them to understand better the geography lessons they have studied in schools farther north the mountains are still covered with snow Lars is luckier than some Norwegian children for his home is less than half a mile away on Saturday nights all the children who can be spared from farm work and from tending herds gather at one of the cedar Huts for a happy time in the summer daylight lasts late into the night and often at midnight the sun is still shining making the sky almost as bright as during the day for this reason Northern Norway is called the land of the midnight sun no regian are a cheerful people and there's nothing they like better than a party when everyone has arrived the fun begins someone always brings a musical instrument for Norwegians love music and there is sure to be [Applause] [Applause] singing [Music] Norway's very ruggedness has helped to create a sturdy spirit in its people who have learned by farming the little patches along the fjords to make the best use of their beautiful and mountainous land what the soil fails to give them they have learned to take from the sea thus by farming and fishing the Norwegian people have become masters of their environment in the cool wet country country that lies so far to the [Music] North all right more than you ever wanted to know about Norway uh post World War II uh I'm trying to get this U film to feed go go go go all right I think we're going to do it uh this film is um where is it it's called a new ride I'll change the title in a sec [Music] riding the feeling of speed and motion it's an experience that man has known and enjoyed as long as he's known the horse today we still have horses and people especially kids love to ride for fun but lately kids have responded to a new kind of [Music] ride the mini bike its motorized appeal has captured kids attention like nothing else is done for a long time the minibike it's the new ride n a way of recreational living that seems to be gaining more and more interest year after year that's the sporting fun of mini bike riding but with mini bikes there's a broad concern for safety and they're should be because safety and fun must go together safety in order to be effective is learned in a positive way and used in good practice it's an attitude let's make sure it's the right one [Music] the privilege of having a minibike carries with it responsibilities mature responsibilities it was made to be used but at the right time the trouble is most youngsters put many bikes and bicycles in the same category granted they both have two wheels but the mini bike is different it has a [Music] motor [Music] it's a dangerous playground the small minibike the small Rider the street is definitely the wrong place to be anytime people just don't expect to see something as small as a minibike making an appearance on the street its profile is even smaller than a bicycle all too often the rules of Common Sense are broken the temptation to ride illegally at that overcomes the concern for [Music] safety the law has been applied for a purpose parents have to supervise proper use of the small motorized cycle and it's everyone's job to see that laws are obeyed this kind of underground riding isn't doing much for the reputation of the minibike and it can only lead to one thing trouble [Music] one of the things that we're most concerned about is the size of the machine and we find that as we investigate accidents that so often the driver of the car did not see the rider of the motorcycle or the minibike a minibike is characterized by a short wheelbase tiny Wheels low seat very small and easy for youngsters to handle and so we're concerned that youngsters don't try to ride these on a speets and highways in traffic on a machine like this they should always use their rear brake first and of course if they use the front wheel brake and not the rear wheel brake they run the risk of locking up that front wheel and then of course they can't stir it some other key things about mini bikes is the use of the kill button so that you can shut the engine off if you should fall and of course a really important feature for youngsters is not to take the muffler off because a a real factor in public acceptance is quietness so we want to keep these machines quiet so that they do not disturb people learning how to ride mini bikes is easy for many the bicycle has been a good teacher of balance many bikes are different though and there's a proper time and place to learn a cleared parking lot obtained with permission can be used for your beginning checkout you'll go through these points know your bike a maintenance pre-check with a familiarization of controls followed with engine off stops restricted riding and supervised [Music] riding the most important part of minibike riding is knowing how to safely stop this is where the instructor puts the three T's to work they are teach test and try out we first teach brake familiarization some bikes have two hand brakes other bikes have a front-and brake and a rear foot brake here's the throttle the rider while sitting on the bike learns the Fe of the parts and controls that make the mini bike react other things like finding neutral are taught as well dry land instruction beforehand makes it easier for the riter later on next the teacher tests the learner this review helps the student remember and gives him practice that's right right very good now each mini bike rider tells what he's just learned in getting to know the bike this kind of programmed learning helps when the next steps are taught tested and tried out with the bike in motion real good very good hey you're doing all right okay now let's get your helmets on the helmet one of the most important items of safety is is used whenever the bike and Rider are in motion it is strapped on for a snug but comfortable fit make it a natural Association the helmet and the bike always go together okay now let's put your gloves on protective clothing and gloves are also part of your safety appearance hey look at me okay now sit a little further back on the seat a good mini bike rider should have a good posture feet are correctly placed on the pegs eyes looking forward not down leg position goes hand inand with body position the knees are kept close to the gas tank now to try out with the engine off dry run stops let the rider put to work what he's just learned about brakes practical knowledge of how to stop is good safety knoow ready to ride eye protection in place this is the restricted riding part of the lesson with the engine powering the bike the instructor guides speed and balance as the mini biker pushes off and steers Straight Ahead okay not too much gas holding on to the bike helps to smooth sudden starts the learner now feels the mini with the engine working under this bike power he practices straight line [Music] braking the instructor still maintaining close control jogs along with the rider as a new experience in the lesson unfolds this time it's steering over a predetermined route now confident that the lesson has progressed comfortably the instructor watches from the sidelines this is the supervised riding part of their training occasional prompting and guidance is given but it's mainly an individual effort by now objects are easier to tackle every now and then a corrective reminder like keeping good posture is given gradual progression is encouraged gear shifting is still another Plateau to reach in the safety learning session safety techniques become natural with familiarization an emergency stop command is given Panic stops help reaction skills turning braking and balancing staying on the right track this is just part of what it takes in the procedure of developing good riding habits and part of the progress learned in your improving safety attitude shifting involves coordination with the throttle as you ease into a higher gear be sure you're using both brakes apply the rear brake slightly ahead of the front brake part of riding is making sure your bike is safe before mounting it in your walk around inspection check all cables brake action and brake adjustment check the oil the gas supply the handle bar should be locked in place all bolts are tight tires are kept properly inflated your owner's manual will tell you the correct pressure to [Music] use a loose chain needs adjustment the alignment marks which should match up on both sides of the tire are your guides when adjusting to about a/ in of play chain care in the way of lubrication is also important the air cleaner is also given periodic attention the filter is cleaned in a nonflammable solvent rung dry and given a drop of oil before it's reassembled moving a minibike by car requires attention to preparation all parts that allow the gas to flow are turned off the carburetor is drained handlebars are folded down to make the bike more comp packed and they're locked into place don't make the mistake of tying a minibike to a car instead load it into the trunk as it is eased into position keep the oil capite of the bike up that way there's less chance of an oil leak there we are how about many families have station wagons which are handy when it comes to transport mini bikes the key to stowing a minibike in a station wagon is to Anchor it into position the bike's weight should be kept as low as possible lower it into the luggage storage compartment it's much safer to have most of the weight below and on the rear wheel help cushion the ride with the aid of an old blanket or pad lock the bike into place with the aid of a tie down strap one end is hooked to the bike the other end is fastened to the floor of the wagon once anchored the minibike is safe from hazardous movement inside the station wagon helmet should be stored below as well they're out of the way here and can't roll around while you're traveling other bikes like the larger ones adults ride can be towed on a special trailer if the bike is not properly locked into place it could create a perilous situation if it should come off on the road finding a place to ride doesn't have to be a problem you'll discover there are many areas available in some parts of the country there's the national [Music] forest before riding check in at the ranger station there may be parts of the forest that are not open for bikes remember when you borrow something you ask permission before you use it and you respect and take care of it when you use it that's what most off-road riding is all about the Rangers are glad to offer information their Maps will point out the places for riding that are open to motorcycles courtesy and safety in the forest is everyone's concern make sure the forest service knows that you're among the people who care review their Common Sense policy of protecting our natural environment always stay on existing Trails off open Meadows out of live stream beds and off of fire brakes and the Rangers remind us that all bikes must be equipped with USDA approved spark arrester [Music] mufflers [Music] [Applause] Camp location ready to prepare for the ride but before riding make sure you have the right safety attitude boots give protection that no tennis shoe or street shoe can riding pants are straight-legged no bell bottoms right over there that's it hey let's get ready to ride a long sleeve shirt is a must for trail riding helmet should meet strict safety standards check for a rating it should have at least a z90 and preferably a snil foundation approval this glove has no seam which could cause riding blisters the other side of the glove has protective ridges they are right here goggles keep dust and bugs out of your eyes it's good practice and common sense to wear them after dressing with protection don't forget your pre- bike walk around check how's the chain don't forget to check the gas and oil how about the brakes time to ride get him start check over your shoulder before you go remember to respect others and their right to use the forest by staying away from other campers be conscious of things like noise and dust things that you can control always stay on existing trails and avoid running over plants of any kind and don't spin your wheels that's the kind of thing that causes erosion one of the advantages of traveling by bike is that you can get to places faster and many times easier it's a time for Discovery exploration and [Music] fun [Music] that's remember just because your mini can go far on little gasoline doesn't mean that long trips can be taken always know your location make sure you can easily walk back to Camp if you have a breakdown always ride together never alone the fun of riding together it's much better sharing things that way man to [Music] man [Music] private property owners want to know who's using their land and how it's being used it might surprise you to learn how many people are receptive to your riding on their land if you ask first out in farm country let the farmer know of your concern for his livestock and planted ground tell him about your safety attitude it's reassuring that you have safety equipment and all bikes are equipped with Mufflers everyone must do their part in maintaining a good image for the cyclist doing the right thing can mean more ground for all Riders especially in those areas of the country that have less public land to ride [Music] on [Music] be on the alert for the unexpected wire is always a potential Hazard it can be hard to see so always be prepared for sudden stops carefully cross fences if they're down stay on trails and those areas the farmer gives permission to ride on adults should lead the way keep your speed down if this is unfamiliar territory stay on the farmers trails and enjoy the fun of riding here's a special situation that calls for these Riders to bring their bikes to a stop alongside the trail the motors are being shut off too the reason horses can be easily frightened by bikes pull well off the trail and sit still be considerate of others make a friend on the trail one of the questions that is put to us so often is if the youngsters cannot ride on the streets and highways where can they ride well we feel that one of the most important things is for City fathers and public officials to make off street riding areas available to youngsters and if we're going to teach them young and teach them early we need to provide a place where they can't get hit by cars so many bike parks and trail riding areas are really necessary in this whole kind of a program we're pleased to find that many communities are doing this sort of thing and if they have an opportunity to get on the machine and to learn how to break it and how to accelerate it and uh how to turn and how to maintain their balance and interact with other vehicles on the trail and off Street and this provides them with a very important uh sense of response that uh just can't be learned too early and they'll be better car drivers and if they address the motorcycles while they'll have conquered many of these things at a point in time where they're really skillful so we think that the off speed area is very vital to a good job of teaching safety with motorcycles the bike park is one popular outing for the rider the desert still another here unfamiliar territory tells these cyclists the correct attitude of safety slower travel looking ahead for the unexpected and keeping in control of the bike at all times if that doesn't happen then the incautious rider may be in for a few [Music] surprises [Music] those are some of the potential hazards to watch out for they usually appear when you least expect them another is following two closely especially when going up [Music] hills Hill travel means solo travel wait for your buddy this is the time to ride without following and without being followed use both brakes and stay in gear when going down keep a good body position going up your engine downhill can be your third brake and when going up shift your weight slightly forward sensible Hill travel part of your safety attitude let's review some of the points first your protective clothing a long sleeve shirt boots helmet goggles [Music] gloves second your off bike bik check brakes bolts cables chain gas oil tires third your on bike attitude look before you go travel with companions keep your distance stay in line know how to use your brakes think of protection of the environment keep noise and dust to minimum be courteous of others ride have their eyes would have glazed over at some point so um yeah you know they tried uh lots of uh that 70s kind of having a good time having a good time uh type of music um but yeah I had no idea no
