for is all for hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mimer films and we forget to mute our computer so that we get an annoying feedback um anyhow that was part of the coret stock can collection which is outakes from uh other things uh I'm muted am I muted please confirm that I'm not muted um okay Sho uh cuz that's a problem if you this is the first time you've tuned in guess what we watch old 16 mm films and then we get to watch me uh Wrangle new technology which is not behaving so we're we span more than a 100 Years of Technology uh on both ends uh there's problems so sorry glad I'm not mut muted anyhow um we watch old 160mm films that last thing that we saw was a bunch of outakes a raw Cod Chrome footage from Coronet that they would shoot for a specific film that they did and then they say well we got all this leftover footage that we shot like we'll just put it on these big reels and um they'd have a three-letter code on each 400t reel and there's nowhere I have yet to find a list or a card catalog that says what's on each reel so we just are pulling out reels and like okay well this is um you know this is uh BMV this is uh BMW and sometimes they have something to do with each other sometimes it's it's crazy random so I very much enjoy uh watching and discovering these and especially because it has extra long scenes so if I know what it came from I might see extra footage and I might actually get to see people holding up slates um or see stuff in color that I've only seen in black and white or faded so it is kind of cool I mean there's no audio it wasn't audio was recorded separately um but it's it's kind of fun to explore and learn stuff um and learn about the process so um execute old zip on a yellow flute and several other Tunes to but he couldn't make a penny with his one day he met singular qu old man with a big tuba who said I traveled wide and far but I never made a penny with my then they met two men who were traveling with a big bass drum and a symol thing who said we played since early spring but we haven't made a penny with booming Zing so the man with the FL went and the other went while the man with the drum and the symol thing went boom boom boinging and they traveled wide and far together they made the wel ring with their boom sing sing and all the pennies the people fling when they hear the [Music] you sound better to party than you do at school I suppose we should have parties more often and now does anybody have a poem he'd like to say by himself a funny poem Jimmy I never saw a purple cow I'd never hope to see one but I can tell you here and now I'd rather see than be one yes sir I agree with you Jimmy but can someone give us a poem about something we can see Mr Brown Tommy well I'd like to say a poem about something exciting all right you go right ahead fell a wet ship in the flowing sea a wind that follows fast and fills the white and rustling sail and bends the Gallant mas and bends the Gallant mask my boys while like the eagle free away the good ship flies and leaves old England on the leav that's fine there's another verse oh fine but look when Tommy says the second verse let's all try to think about the pictures he's talking about go ahead Tommy oh for a soft and Gentle Wind I heard a fair one cry but give to me the snoring Breeze and white waves heaving high and white waves heaving High my dads a good ship tight and free a world of waters is our home and merry men are we oh Tommy now notice the words in Tommy's poem made pictures you can actually imagine you're seeing the pictures now words make sounds too and sometimes they sound like real things wind waves or even a bus here's a poem I think you'll like it's a story about a bus ride downtown see if I can find it here oh yes here it is rumbling and rattly good green bus where are you going to carry us up the shiny lengths of Avenue where lights keep company two by two where Windows glitter with things to buy and churches hold their Steeples High round the circle and pass the park still and shadowy dim and dark over the asphalt and into the drive isn't it fun to be alive look to the left in the rivers there with ships and whistles and freshened air to the right more windows row on row and everyone like a picture show or little stages where people play at being themselves by night and day and never guess that they have us for audience in the good green bus and that's the poem about the [Music] bus how' you like it it was fun wasn't it yeah the words Roll Along just like a real bus just like the ones we ride on downtown mhm what else did you like about it I think it'll be more fun riding on a bus next time because the poem tells you so many new things that you can look for you know that's the best part about reading new poems you start seeing old things in new ways and that's always fun isn't it are poems written about everything Mr Brown oo just about everything Let's see we had poems about the wind and the waves about a bus and about Jimmy's cow you know anybody can write a poem and he can write about whatever he pleases can children write poems they certainly can here I'll read you one by a boy in the sixth grade he likes train so he wrote about trains now pretend now as I read this that you're actually seeing the train here comes the train zooming along taking its route each night and each day singing a song as it swings and sways so shiny so gay on its long long way yes here come the freight cars so shiny and bright zooming along till far out of sight the whistle is tooting so jolly and gay while people are watching they smile and they say there goes the train so happy and gay rumbling a song both night and [Music] day that was fun Mr Brown could we write a poem like that can we all write a poem certainly what would you like to write about something just for fun just for fun say that reminds me marshmallows wait a minute wait a minute we'll toast them in the fireplace we'll take turns using the forks and those of you who are not using Forks I'd appreciate it if you'd start cleaning up the tables will you sure that's fine hey we can write a poem about toasting marshmallows but how do we start well supposing we just start by uh well just thinking of a line uh how does it feel to toast marshmallows warm warm that's a good start what else I thought of a whole poem marshmallows are good toasted unless you get your fingers roasted how true how's this our Forks are very long and straight that's a good line anyone else our hands and faces are warm good fine anyone else we rest our Forks across the CR until the crust is brown but that doesn't rhyme poemes have to rhyme don't don't they Mr Brown well no they don't Lynn as a matter of fact we've already written a poem we have we certainly have listen to this our Forks are long and very straight our hands and faces are warm we rest our Forks across the grap and the crust is brown how do you like it good poems are fun to read and to write my class has a party only once a year but we say poems and we write po poems all the year round would your class like to write a poem you know poems are [Music] fun those kids must have been uh amped up on sugar um was the level of excitement was I mean sure this is before video games this is before screens uh smartphones Etc but uh Tik Tok videos but man they were so excited let's do this poem about the [Laughter] band I love when cornet decides let's make kids enthusiastic in a classroom um and uh they were all the same level of enthusiasm versus you know some kids are super excited some kids are like quiet in the corner but no they're all the same level of like oh and you can't monetize this because you use this song and that song and this song so there you go um accidentally I have a theme here's the fisherman's boy [Music] here comes the Oliver [Music] Smith that's the Horn of the Oliver Smith no more baseball today for Danny he's in a hurry there's Mr Brown fishing from the dock hi Mr Brown Mr Brown is a good friend of Danny's he's down here almost every day he's a good fisherman where is Danny going it's the Oliver Smith Danny has come to meet it the Oliver Smith is a fishing boat aoy there Dany is friends with all the fishermen who work on the Oliver Smith here come the Nets they use to catch fish the captain of the Oliver Smith is a special friend of Danny's he's Danny's father fishing was good today Danny's father is a good fisherman and a good Captain too there is still work for him to do before he can go home with Danny but waiting is fun for Danny what fun it is to feel the boat right rising and falling in the water this is the cabin where Danny's father steers the Oliver Smith he can see the lake all around him what fun it must be to work on the Oliver Smith what fun it would be to fish from the boat but Danny never has never and he wants to he wants to go out on the Oliver Smith he wants to go fishing with his father when can he when can he when can he go fishing on the Oliver Smith dany's father knows when when Danny is a fisherman only real fisherman can do the work that has to be done on the Oliver Smith only real fisherman but why can't Danny learn to be a fisherman that's it it is sunrise the next morning the Oliver Smith is still at the dock Danny is at the dock too he offered comes down to watch the men getting the Oliver Smith ready for the day's fishing on the lake here come the Nets the men used to trap fish in deep water Danny's father has to study the weather map and charts that will help him find the best places for fishing on the lake now the Oliver Smith is ready to go father will look for Dany when they come back this afternoon at last the Oliver Smith is on its way the captain and his men are going fishing now that his father has gone fishing what do you suppose Dany is going to do Danny's going fishing too won't his father be surprised hi Mr Brown Wait for Danny Mr Brown has been a fisherman for many years he knows how to find the best places for fishing the wind is from the West so right here should be a a good place to fish Danny is going to learn to be a real fisherman Danny has all the equipment he needs now all he needs is some help and Mr Brown is just the person to help him Mr Brown Can show Dany how to put the fish line on the pole how to put a bobber on the line how to put a sinker on the line and how to put on the hook Danny will use some of Mr Brown's Bait when he fishes from the dock Mr Brown uses worms for bait it's good to have a friend as helpful as Mr Brown when you're learning about fishing here goes Danny's line how jerk turkey a real fisherman has to be patient and not keep pulling up his line or he'll scare the fish away not yet Danny see a real fisherman has to be quiet but Danny isn't patient and Dany isn't quiet and Dany will have to learn many more things about fishing Mr Brown will help him Mr Brown won't fish for a while he'll help Danny fish you lure the line gently into the water like this and then you watch the bobber and don't pull up too soon not yet shh a fish is nibbling on the bait still nibbling now it's a perch Danny's first fish won't his father be surprised and look the Oliver Smith it's nearer to shore than usual the men are bringing in the fishnets here they come and look at all the fish there are chubs and trout here that's what you catch out on the lake there's Danny's father if he could see what's happening on Shore he would be pleased for Dany has been learning many things about fishing from Mr Brown he has learned that a fisherman has to move to different places during the day because fish move move to different places in the water he knows a good way for finding these different places Mr Brown has taught him Mr Brown has taught Danny how to cast his line into the spots where the fishing is best when you want to rest or eat your lunch there is a way to prop your pole so you don't have to hold it but you can still watch your bobber Danny is learning many things about fishing from Mr Brown how fast the time passes when you're learning it's already afternoon and getting later Danny doesn't realize how late until he hears here comes the Oliver Smith heading for home fishing is over for today Danny has a real surprise for his father see all the fish he's caught Danny's father is pleased with a day's catch on the Oliver Smith but there is something that will please him even more look at that you have to be a real fisherman to catch that many fish now Danny's father knows that Dany has learned to be a real fisherman so early one morning just a few days later just as his father promised Dany goes on board the Oliver Smith to go fishing with his father out on the lake with the other real fish [Music] Fisher [Music] in Mr Webster's Dictionary a KN is described as any tie or fastening formed with flexible cord rope or the like including bends hitches and splices to The Boatman knots are important tools in the safe operation of his vessel a good knot is one which can be tied with both speed and ease and will hold fast after it is tied it can be untied or cast off with equal speed and ease speed of course comes only as a result of practice when learning it's best to go slowly one step at a time to begin with you should learn three terms commonly used in explaining how to tie kns first is the bite a bite forms the basis for for tying most knots the second is the standing part this is the long or unused portion the short or free end the part on the other side of the bite is called The Bitter End so we have the bite the standing part or long portion and The Bitter End or short n one of the simplest knots to tie is the overhand knot simply form a bite then pull a Bitter End through the bite and tighten the overhand forms the basis of many other knots and can be used as an end or stoper knot to keep the end of a line from running out through a hole or a block a better stopper knot since it is larger and easier to untie is the figure8 knot to tie this knot make an underhand bite bring The Bitter End around and over the standing part pass the end under then up through the bike pick let's try it again make an underhand bite bring The Bitter End around and over the standing part pass The Bitter End under then up through the bite a reef knot or square knot is one of the easiest knots to use when joining two lines together that are of the same size let's take a careful look to see just how it is tied to make it easier to follow lines of different colors are used first cross the lines over and form an overhand knot left over right then bend The Bitter End of one line back until it lies alongside its own standing part now bend the other Bitter End right over left and pass it through the bite formed in the first line tighten and the square or Reef knot is formed let's watch it again first a simple overhand knot left over right then fold The Bitter End back making sure it lies alongside its own standing part now bend the other Bitter End right over left and pass it through the bite in the first line the secret here is to remember remember left over right and right over left but be sure now that you haven't tied a granny or false Reef knot in a granny knot the bitter ends are separated by the bite this knot is very apt to slip or Jam however a granny knot can be easily changed to a square knot by simply reversing the top overhand knot so that each Bitter End lies alongside its own standing part another useful knot for joining two lines especially if they are of unequal size is the sheet b sometimes called the Becka B since it is stronger and more secure it is preferable to join two lines with a sheet Bend rather than a square knot to tie the knot form a bite in one line so that The Bitter End is on the right side bring the the other line up through the bite then around to the right under both sides then Up and Under itself A variation of the sheet bend called the double sheet Bend should be used to join two lines when one is much larger than the other this knot is less AP to slip and easier to untie than the sheet Bend to tie this knot form the bite in the larger line so that the short end is on the right side bring the other line up through the bite then around to the right under both sides then bring the end up and under itself at this point to form a double sheet Bend run the end once more around both sides of the bite and again under under itself let's try it again form a bite in the larger line so the short end is on the right side bring the other line up through the bite and then around to the right under both sides Up and Under itself then around and under itself once more as you finish tying the knot both of the short ends should be on the right side if the ends are on opposite sides the knot has a tendency to slip this is the Carrick band it is a very good knot for tying two lines together when there will be great strain on the knot such as when joining two parts of a toll line in addition to being very strong the Carrick Bend Will Not jam and become difficult to untie here is how the knot is tied with one end of the line form an overhand bite with both The Bitter End and the standing part pointing away from you lay the second Bitter End across the bite and alongside the standing part now pass the second end under the standing part over the first Bitter End under the right side of the bite over itself and under the left side of the bite let's try it again with one end of the line form an overhand bite with both The Bitter End and the standing line to a ring or post to tie this hitch pass the line through the ring once and then around and through a second time then cross The Bitter End over the standing part to make a bite then around the standing part and through the bite to form the first half hitch the second half hitch is made the same way pass the end around the standing part and through the bite to complete the knot this knot is very reliable and is often used when Ming let's tie it again pass the line through the ring once then around and through a second time form the two half hitches around the standing part and the notus finished a clove hitch is used for securing a line to a post or a pile this hitch is easily made and loosened when tied on a large pile it will hold up to 90% of the strength of the line watch how this is done form a bite with a Bitter End under the standing part Loop it over the top of the pile in the free end form a second bite again with The Bitter End under drop this bite over the top of the pile and tighten let's try it again form a bite with The Bitter End under Loop it over the pile again form a bite with The Bitter End under and loop it over the pile if you can remember the word under you can can't go wrong Keep The Bitter End under the standing part one of the best hitches is the rolling hitch also called The midshipman's Hitch this hitch can be tied in a tight line will not slip and can be easily cast off regardless of how much tension there is on the line pass the line through through the ring and for this knot allow plenty of length for The Bitter End cross this end over the standing part some distance from The Ring bring The Bitter End up through the bite to form a half hitch draw the half hitch as tight as possible still holding tension on the half hitch pass the end through the bite again making a complete turn around the first first half inch tightening The Bitter End Kinks the standing part ensuring that the first half hch will hold another half hitch or lock hitch on the standing part completes the rolling hitch let's try it again pass the line through the ring and make the first half hitch notice how the second turn goes above the first and how pulling it tight makes the line take a kink this is the whole secret of making this not hold now the second or lock hitch is made the rolling hitch is cast off by simply passing the end through the bite first formed and then pulling it to break the hitch open the rolling hitch requires considerable practice but when you get the Knack of it you'll find it has plenty of uses for example two lines passing through the same ring at different angles can be tightened by placing a half hitch around both lines on the V and then pulling them together a half inch might slip but can be secured by form in a rolling hitch the anchor Bend or Fisherman's Bend is similar to The Rolling hitch and is used for making a line fast to an anchor buoy or Spar to tie this knot take two turns through the ring followed by an underhand bite then thread The Bitter End through the turns and pull tight you should give The Bitter End an extra hitch around the standing part for greater strength the anchor Bend is different from the Rolling hitch in that the two Loops will swivel freely around the ring or post now let's repeat take two turns through the ring followed by an underhand Loop then thread The Bitter End through the turns and pull tight add an extra hitch around the standing part for greater strength every Boatman should know how to secure a line to a cleat let's see just how this is done the line is first pulled to the cleat looped around one lug then brought up over and around the other lug then looped over the first lug again it is made secure by forming a bite with The Bitter End under then looping it over the second lug then make a second bite with a Bitter End under the standing part and loop it over the first lug of the cleat let's try that again the line is first pulled to the cleat natural fiber line like Manila is cut from a spool a temporary whipping should be made to keep the strands from unraveling here is the easiest and one of the best ways to accomplish this using a light piece of marlin lay a loop along the line and then then make a series of turns around the line and over the loop when the width of the wraps is equal to the diameter of the Line pass the working end on your bare skin since many lines spend at least as much time in storage as they do in use it is important that they be prepared and stowed properly to prepare a line for storage it should be coiled in uniform Loops the picked up end that you start with must hang below the center of the coil when almost all of the line has been coiled The Bitter End should be brought from the top of the coil and wrapped snugly several times around the coils The Bitter End is then passed through the top Loop and pull tight when bunched in this manner the coil will stay together under most conditions however if you wish to hang the line up by The Bitter End for storage here is another method that will keep the coils more securely gathered after the line is coiled and wrapped as in the previous method a loop is made from the loose end and then pass through the upper part of the coil the loop is then placed over and around the coil and positioned at the top of the wraps The Bitter End is pulled tight and once more passed up through the top of the coils to serve as a carrying line although this method takes a little longer to do than the first the added security is often worth the effort speed and tying knots and the ability to tie them under all conditions even in the dark comes only from continued practice knowing which knot to use is as important as how to tie it your ability to select the right knot and to tie it properly is an important part of good seamanship when used incorrectly knots become a li ability and a danger however when correctly used they are extremely helpful and will increase your boating [Music] pleasure I'm trying this I am trying this microphone speaking of bitter ends I'm flipping off this microphone right now I am so done with it um flaking out it's really frustrating and you might say like well gee why don't you just look and see if it's being read by OBS and um the problem is I'm doing multiple windows and uh so we are going to investigate um getting a new mic maybe I might migrate to a newer uh Mac that I have um not happy about it but you know for me it's it's frustrating I enjoy showing you films but then when technology craps out it's annoying and I had this big Bill build up for this film that was basically saying well it doesn't matter you figured it out um thanks for watching today thank you Jeremy for the $2 for going towards buying a
