e e e for that for for e Jack is working you can see that he's carrying bricks from the big pile in front of his [Music] house he's taking them to his backyard Jack and his father are going to build an outdoor fireplace but they'll need many more bricks than these Jack and father will have much work to do before they can build the fireplace Jack is working alone now father has gone to get a Helper to make their work easier he should be back soon there he is now but he's alone didn't father get the helper yes he did he got two helpers a long wide board and a sturdy wheelbarrow we'll see how they'll help make the work easier soon the wheelbarrow is filled with bricks now we'll see what good health helpers we have you couldn't lift this many bricks by yourself but look here see the long handles you can pull up on them and lift one end of the wheelbarrow you're lifting up the bricks too and it isn't much work the wheelbarrow makes it easier to lift the bricks because of the way it's made the long handles the place for the bricks and the wheel touching the ground the wheelbarrow is a kind of lever levers help make work easier and see how easy it is to move the load of bricks along it's easier to roll something along than to drag it along yes the wheelbarrow is a good helper wait a minute now our helper the wheelbarrow will need help how can we lift the wheelbarrow with all the bricks in it up the steps you'll see the board how will the board help watch you still have to use your muscles but rolling the wheelbarrow up the board is easier than lifting it up the steps when a board is used this way we call it an inclined plane yes the board and the wheelbarrow really do make work easier what unusual helpers we have thanks Jack a board and a wheelbarrow did you ever think about how many different helpers people use to make work easier down the street a new house is being built let's see if we can find the helpers the men are using a wheelbarrow helps here and so does a board what else are the men using to make work easier what does the carpenter use a nail and a hammer think how much work it would be for the carpenter to push a nail into the board without something like a hammer to help him do you see how this saw makes work easier what about this plane and this drill this pulley helps doesn't it there are so many tools that make work easier for us and they help us do many things we couldn't do with our hands alone but are there any other ways we can make our work easier let's think what makes the clothes move about why the wind we know that the wind can make things move for instance have you ever seen a windmill on a farm at the bottom there's a pump pumping water by hand is hard work work especially when you have to fill such a big tank now the wind is blowing let's connect the windmill to the pump lifting this stick unlocks the windmill now the wind is doing the work we don't need the pump handle as long as the wind is blowing people have invented many interesting ways to help make work easier have you ever wondered what makes a sailboat go the wind pushes against the sail and moves the boat so you see we can use the wind to do work for us we can use other things to work for us too have you ever thought about the work you do when you play with toys is there anything that will do this work for us let's find out first we'll put the toy here then we'll put a water wheel here and connect it to the toy now we'll turn on the hose see the water is turning the wheel and it's working the toy we put running water to work for us of course there isn't very much water here and it isn't doing very much work but where we have a whole river we can use it to turn big water wheels that will do a great deal of work we often Place water wheels at Falls much water can do much work just as a little water can do a little work but Jack and father have a little work to do themselves listen a train does it help make our work easier easier what makes the train go steam steam inside the engine when you heat a kettle of water hot steam inside the kettle makes the cover go up and down hot steam inside the railroad engine makes the wheels turn and that makes the train go engines help us do more work than we can do by ourselves this is a diesel engine it doesn't use steam it uses oil to make it go this kind of engine is called a motor other Motors run on gasoline automobiles use gasoline Motors to make them go many kinds of engines and Motors work for us they make our work easier they do work that's too hard for us they even carry us around so you see there are many helpers all around that we use to make our work easier we've seen only a few of them but there are many more of course there is some work we have to do ourselves that takes muscle power but there are many machines and tools that help us make our work easier how many can you think of [Music] so I want to introduce you to this microphone who's bad they're not very good I'm not sure what has happened I don't know if the the USB thing on the bottom has crapped out but it's it's probably coming up on 10 years of usage and I very much liked it I thought it was very solid good microphone but not if it keeps crapping out uh anyways I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we normally don't have no I'm not who am I kidding of course we have mic problems and in in the past it has been like something has been muted or not muted but it's also possible that that part of the problem has been that this mute button is also crapping out um and I thought that I unmuted but I didn't um or vice versa um it's easy for me to blame technology but I'm also very forgetful myself so could have been me anyways you're not here to talk about bad microphones uh you're here to watch old 16 millimeter films and that last film was uh how tools and machines help us it's coret film pretty great uh a lot of fun um I think it's time you're old enough and uh our dog nipy uh is uh pregnant with puppies I think you need to find out where puppies come from here it is the birth of puppies in beautiful color enjoy this boy and his dad are taking a very special ride they're going to bring home the boy pet a female dog she has been mated with a male that belongs to the boy's grandfather now she's ready to go home and the boy thinks it's great that his dog is going to have [Music] puppies [Music] how closely the boy watches over his pet but at first he sees no difference at all in the way she looks or acts the boy wants his dog to have healthy puppies so he feeds her special [Music] Foods [Music] although she doesn't like to take vitamin pills the boy knows it's good for her to have them a long time later after 36 Days the boy's father thinks he can feel something can it be puppies the boy himself tries to find out it's hard to tell but the boy notices that his pet acts differently before she always wanted to play but now she [Music] doesn't what's here the nipples on her Underside are swollen she must be going to have puppies and soon there'll be milk for them [Music] the boy wonders is the idea of his dog having puppies something like that of his mother and father having a family his baby sister is a little human being and both she and the boy himself are children of their mother and father that's how life goes [Music] on time seems to go so fast it's been 60 days since the dog was mated a box built by the boy and his father will be a good place for her to have the puppies now it's 62 days why doesn't the dog want to [Music] eat why doesn't she want to be petted she seems [Music] Restless [Music] she's going to the box that may mean her puppies are going to be [Music] born she lies quietly for a long time she seems to be breathing so heavily is it time for the puppies to be born they're supposed to be born with a membrane covering them is that true a puppy there is a membrane covering it it looks like shiny plastic the mother dog bites through it and lets the puppy out she uses her tongue to lick her baby dry what an interesting thing that puppies are born with their eyes closed how wonderful it is to watch Life Begin and to help the new mother with her first baby to help the baby find a nipple so it can get the milk it [Music] [Music] needs but there's only one puppy will there be others the mother's body squeezes like this to move a puppy out it's born can the boy's father help he breaks the membrane covering the puppy then the mother dog herself takes over she cleans it and she bites through a long thin cord attached to it before it was born the puppy got its food from the mother through that cord now that the puppy is Born the cord isn't needed the puppy will take its food through its mouth the first puppy is drinking its mother's milk now and there's the second puppy how many puppies will there be is a third one going to be born there's the squeezing movement again the boy's father helps and there's another puppy the mother dog takes off the membrane just as she did [Music] before [Music] once again she bites through the [Music] cord another cute [Music] puppy how many puppies will there be now there are three no four and they're still [Music] coming [Music] clean paper is a help but a newly born puppy shouldn't be touched very much it's so little about 6 in long how many puppies will there [Music] be the birth is over and the hungry puppies nurse while their mother rests how many are there in this litter there are nine all drinking their mother's milk how tired the mother is having puppies is hard and how tired the puppies are after their first meal puppies sleep a lot when they're very young they spend most of their time sleeping or eating [Music] now that everything is all right the mother dog rests too next day the boy wonders are all the puppies alike looking at them he discovers that five are [Music] males four are females the days pass 6 days since they were born the boy watches and sometimes he helps see how carefully he picks up a puppy and isn't it interesting that its eyes are still [Music] [Applause] closed the puppies really don't need to see yet they stay so close to their [Music] mother their mother leaves them sometimes but when she comes back she picks them up in her mouth notice how she picks them up moves them around and cleans them just like [Music] before eight days have passed since the puppies were [Music] born 12 days have passed and the boy is curious something looks different why the puppy's Eyes Are [Music] Open it's been 30 days since the puppies were born they're bigger and so frisky that the boy and his father have made the Box higher but sometimes they're let out of the [Music] box something else is new the puppies eat from a bowl they've done that since they were 21 days [Music] old [Music] now the puppies can move about it's fun to watch them for a while the boy keeps his puppies away from visitors he knows it isn't good for them to be petted too [Music] much the puppies were born 50 days ago and now it's all right to play with [Music] them they like to play as much as the boys and girls do [Music] have fun but don't play too [Music] [Music] rough imagine how proud the boy feels caring for the puppies he watched being born [Music] TR [Music] [Applause] w yeah there you go that's where um puppies come from and by uh abstraction where babies come from this is I have a couple of films that talk about how to talk to your kids about um birds and the bees where babies come from and one of them is like find an opportunity to show your kids a pet giving birth either a dog or a cat um and that's this is the opportunity um and this is an opportunity to do it in a classroom setting and so would this warrant uh getting permission from the parents to say like Hey we're going to show we're baby where puppies come from I who knows um but now we we saw where puppies come from but what I really want to know is where do rocks come from let's find out together [Music] enjoy did you ever go exploring to look for rocks Don and his father did one day they took a drive in the country and then stopped to look at something can you see what it is it's a huge hole in the ground Don has never seen anything like this before Solid Rock going deep down into the Earth his father tells him it is a quarry he also says that the Earth we live on is made up mostly of Rock The Rock that's taken from this Quarry is called Granite Granite is one kind of rock that is used for building things Granite is a hard rock as Don finds out when he tries to scratch it with a coin hard rocks do not scratch easily Don is going to save the piece of granite it will remind him of his visit to the Quarry later that day Don and his father drive to another place here they walk down toward the river near the river they see many interesting rocks rocks of many different sizes and shapes Don notices that some of the Rocks here are made up of layers father explains that this is sandstone a kind of rock made up of layers of sand this Sandstone was formed long ago underwater millions of years ago a huge sea covered this place Rivers flowed into this sea the moving water carried sand and mud that sank to the bottom something like this the sand settled through the water to form a layer as more sand falls a second layer is formed the weight of the sand and water over millions of years helped to press the sand together to form Sandstone Dawn is rubbing off some of the grains of sand rocks that have been formed underwater like Sandstone are usually quite soft a hard rock like Dawn's piece of granite can easily wear away a softer Rock like Sandstone Don is going to save a piece of sandstone now you'll have an example of a sof Rock too father says he can show Don some other kinds of rocks this museum has a collection of rocks and Don will learn more about them in the museum there's a room that's something like a classroom the sign here says learn by doing anyone can come here and try the simple experiments that Don and his father will do also in the room Don sees a collection of different kinds of rocks here's an aquarium filled with different layers of sand but what's Don's father doing he's using his hand to show how water pressed down on the layers of sand to form sandstone here's another way to show what happens when grains of sand are pressed together Don thinks the round hard things on the table look like pieces of sandstone father thinks he can make one like them you take the mold and fill it with the mixture of sand and clay the mold with the moist sand is then placed in a Vie when the Vie is tightened it squeezes the sand together with a great deal of force they'll leave the mold in the Vie for a while and Don knows that's to let the sand dry Dawn hopes that their experiment will turn out like this this piece and the others that were made in the vice look much like dun's piece of sandstone of course he knows it takes millions of years for real Sandstone to form and it takes millions of years for granite to form too Granite belongs to a group of rocks which are made by fire and a great deal of heat that's why Granite is so hard to explain how some rocks are made by fire and heat father points to a picture of a volcano Don knows where he saw this volcano he remembers seeing this same volcano in a film through a volcano like this hot liquid sometimes comes up from deep down in the earth onto the land after the liquid comes out of the volcano and is cooled it becomes hard it forms a kind of rock called lava here's a sample of lava like lava Granite was also hot liquid deep in the earth when it cooled it became a very hard rock is there another kind of hot liquid that gets hard when it cools Don remembers one it was just the other day when father was making paper weights out of lead it took a great deal of heat to melt the lead when the hot lead was poured into the mold it quickly cooled it became hard in much the same way as lava and granite become hard so dawn has learned that some rocks are made by fire and a great deal of heat and others such as Sandstone are made by water Dawn now has a piece of sandstone which is very interesting it's a fossil because it has an outline or imprint of a plant in it any Rock we find that has an imprint of animals or plants is called a fossil Don will be able to see more fossils in another room in the museum here's a fossil fish Dawn can clearly see the head and the tail fossils are found not only in Sandstone but also in another kind of rock made in water Limestone when limestone is buried under other layers of rock it may be pressed and squeezed until after millions of years it can be changed or made over into marble another kind of rock marble is a beautiful hard rock that we often see in buildings pieces of marble can be carved into statues too Don wonders can other rocks be changed over yes if Sandstone is pressed and squeezed for millions of years it too can be changed or made over in into a rock called quartzite Shale is another kind of waterm made rock it can be changed into slate slate may be cut into pieces and used to make roofs well Don is learning much about rocks but can he remember some of the important things this exhibit will help him Ro s made by water are Sandstone Limestone and Shale among the rocks made by fire and heat are granite and lava among the rocks changed or made over are slate and marble now they're going to check their Sandstone experiment the sand in the mold is quite dry now it's quite hard too Don thinks it's very much like a piece of sandstone he'll take it home with him Don has discovered many interesting things about rocks you can too perhaps you might like to start a collection of rocks and learn where they come [Music] from I have to click a different button now so it's I have this muscle memory of immediately going to the microphone changing it um so the beginning that beginning music the intro music is what's used in Our obligation which is the the film about a a school fire so it every time it comes on it immediately makes me start thinking about uh the school fire where kids are jumping out of Windows to avoid dying in the Flames um so I I don't know if I feel like I've shown that on here but maybe maybe not so we'll see [Music] anyhow uh behind me I have a film scanner set up and we have a film set up that I have not named in here yet let me change the name of that this is a fire extinguishers all right enjoy e [Music] oh [Music] good [Music] morning counted 120 cases so far there's no way we're going to be done by five I wish that you wouldn't smoke around me I forgot why don't you go help Bob in [Music] 3A [Music] Jerry what is her problem she's so psyched out I I can't even think about lighting up a cigarette without setting her off Jerry what' I tell you [Music] fire where's the fire [Music] [Applause] extinguisher hey I got [Music] one [Music] [Music] how was I supposed to to know I thought a fire extinguisher was a fire extinguisher when it comes to a fire a little confusion can lead to a lot of trouble maybe even loss of life take this warehouse for instance fortunately no one was hurt or killed but it could have been a lot worse because these people didn't know how to use a very important tool the fire extinguisher there's nothing mysterious about a fire extinguisher each one is a tool designed to do a specific job there are different types of extinguishers for different types of fires you wouldn't use a wrench to put in a screw likewise each type of fire extinguisher is designed to tackle a specific job all fires are not the same I'm going to show you the four different types of fires and how the proper extinguisher will put them out how does a fire extinguisher put out a fire a fire needs three things in order to burn heat Fuel and oxygen when all three are present they combine to form a chemical Chain Reaction remove any one of the sides and the fire goes out every fire extinguisher is designated with an A B C or D letter code a picture symbol or both these markings correspond to the types of fires that the extinguisher is designed to combat now let's take a look at each one of the four types of fires visualize in your mind the areas of your workplace that hold a potential for these fires common combustibles such as paper wood cloth or other organic material are classified as type A fires fire extinguishers capable of extinguishing type A fires are designated with these [Music] markings the burning vapor from A flammable liquid such as gasoline is classified as a type B fire fire extinguishers capable of extinguishing B fires are marked with these [Music] symbols a line electrical fire is known as a type c fire fire extinguishers that can extinguish CA fires have this labeling combustible metal such as magnesium or titanium is known as a type D fire fire extinguishers that can extinguish D fires have this labeling every fire extinguisher clearly displays symbols representing the types of fires that is affect on it's important for you to know the difference to the untrained eye most fire extinguishers look pretty much the same on the outside but inside there's where the difference lies there are five main types of extinguishing Agents water dry chemical CO2 Halon and dry powder let's look at each water pressure extinguishers are only effective on type A fires common [Music] combustibles the water from the extinguisher puts out the fire by removing or lowering the heat to operate the extinguisher hold the safety pin with a twisting motion to snap the seal be careful not to squeeze on the trigger handle when pulling the pin or you won't be able to get it out it looks easy but in an emergency [Music] [Applause] situation [Applause] extinguisher doesn't [Music] work carefully pull out the pin unhook the nozzle then squeeze the handle to release the water use your finger to spread the stream aim at the base of the fire and move the water back and forth with a sweeping motion until the fire is out Dounce the ashes completely to avoid a [Music] reflash and spread the ashes out to make sure they've all been soaked you know it can be dangerous to use an extinguisher on a type of fire other than its displayed rating this is especially true of the water pressure extinguisher let me show you the dangers of misusing this extinguisher using water on a flammable liquid will not put out the fire in fact it will cause it to spread water conducts electricity and spraying water on aive electrical fire could result in your being electrocuted water will react violently with combustible metal and should never be used on a type D fire as you can see using the wrong extinguisher may have a disastrous result extinguishers are marked for a reason there are several types of dry chemical each with its own class rating multi-purpose dry chemical is an extinguishing agent for type A B and C Fires BC dry chemical essentially baking soda is found in many household extinguish wishers and will work on flammable liquid and electrical fires and purple k purple K is a type BC extinguishing agent and is most commonly used in oil fields [Music] fire whenever you fight a fire be sure to stand on the upwind side of the Flames the [Applause] fire now that's the kind of response I like to see they stayed calm took effective action and got the fire while it was still controllable the Oil Workers used a cartridge operated extinguisher like this one the large cylinder contains the extinguishing chemical in this case purple K to operate it remove the hose and place place it above the handle when the small cylinder is punctured like this the tank is pressurized and you're ready to go dry chemical extinguishers may have two different fire ratings ABC multipurpose or BC there's a big difference that difference is the type a fire common combustibles the BC extinguishing agent won't put this fire out but the ABC will of course both ABC and BC dry chemical will smother an electrical fire but they leave something of a mess a CO2 or carbon dioxide extinguisher is another BC rated extinguisher which Smothers the fire by removing the oxygen from the flame it is characterized by its large cone attachment CO2 a BC rated extinguisher will not put out an a fire common combustibles as a matter of fact it could actually spread the fire CO2 is a compressed gas it doesn't leave a mess on mechanical equipment as dry chemical does but CO2 does have its disadvantages CO2 as it comes out of the nozzle is about 110° below zero the extreme cold could damage sensitive electronic gear this is known as thermal shock and is especially threatening to computers the release of CO2 through the plastic cone can also create a static charge which could strike computer tape and erase valuable computer programs and remember not to touch the tube or metal fittings after use if you do you could get a severe Frost burn done well this print out ought to prove our point to Mr rhs oh I hope so or else we better come up with one heck of a good [Music] excuse what's wrong do you smell something [Music] no no that's not the right one call the fire [Music] department [Music] oh [Music] [Music] I think we just found our excuse Halon extinguishers work by actually Breaking the Chain Reaction between heat Fuel and oxygen necessary to keep the fire burning Halon is a gas that leaves the cylinder at a circuitry safe 25° above zero it leaves no residue and does not erase computer tape which is a real plus when dealing with sensitive equipment the smaller Halon extinguishers have a BC rating the larger ones are rated ABC as the B- rating indicates Halon is effective on flammable [Music] liquids the ABC halons will also work on common combustibles the D type fires are less common but are extremely dangerous because the only thing that will put them out are the dry powder extinguishers dry powder extinguishers work differently than the units we've seen previously these extinguishers are designed to completely cover the burning material with dry powder in addition to knowing which type of extinguisher to use and how to operate it it's important to know what to do in a fire emergency every fire should be treated as a dangerous situation fire extinguisher will help you put out a fire but always remember these priorities your first priority is to rescue any victims then Sound the Alarm alert fellow workers and call the fire department immediately even before trying to put the fire out [Music] contain the fire to keep it from spreading only then do you try to extinguish the [Music] fire always remember whenever you're fighting a fire be sure to position yourself between the fire and the exit so you can [Music] escape anytime you've used an extinguisher lay it on its side even if it feels full to alert others that it has been used never place it back on its hook until it has been properly recharged to help you better remember the sequence of this procedure the first letter of each word spells [Music] race like many tools you use the fire extinguisher must be serviced at least once a year to make sure it'll do the job when you need it if the extinguisher has been used or if the seal has been broken it must be serviced immediately familiarize yourself with the location of the fire extinguishers in your workplace take the time to learn their fire rating the best way to stop a fire is to prevent one from starting in the first place keep your work area free from fire hazards replace faulty wiring store flammable liquids in their proper containers and keep the work area clean by placing oily Rags where they belong each class of extinguisher is clearly marked to show what type of fires it will put out before you use an extinguisher check it remember the four types of fires type A fires common combustibles wood paper cloth type B fires flammable liquids type C Fires live electrical type D combustible Metals the best way to fight a fire is to prevent one in the first place but if you have a fire follow this procedure rescue any victims if you can call the fire department and alert fellow workers contain the fire by shutting doors and [Music] windows then if it's safe to do so extinguish the [Music] [Music] fire remember the race procedure rescue alarm contain extinguish race remember the fire extinguisher when properly used will do the job it was intended to do just like any other tool there is just one difference this tool could save your [Music] life [Music] wow that was a awesome uh soundtrack very proggy uh definitely some Goblin in there when um can't remember what was on fire but definitely there was some other stuff in there that sounded um paggy which I don't know 1987 like is that late in Prague like that type of Prague I I don't know European progue um but yeah that series is pretty great I I uh I think we've shown three films from
