hello everybody I'm skip alimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and I was hello everybody that's a problem that's a problem sorry um anyways I was happy to show off that new intro [Music] um periodically when we scan films we find beautiful footage of people running projectors and i' love to Showcase it to you um anywh who uh so today was kind of an interesting day uh this morning uh five boxes of 16mm film showed up as a gift to us from the uh from a uh community College on the coast and so I went through those boxes this is like Christmas for me it's like I go open up the box I'm like o and you know I could do an unboxing video but really it's yeah so anyways I I pulled four films um and uh we're going to try to watch them um so uh let's go ahead and go to the uh scanner which I have behind me behind me behind me uh and watch the computer [Music] enjoy what do all these things have in common each of them works with information the word computer can be used to describe most of our machines which handle information there are two ways computers work with information they count as the dial of a telephone counts the clicks to make the right connection or they measure as a thermometer measures temperature these everyday machines are simple computers but today when we say computer we mean the electronic computer [Applause] [Music] this computer has been given enough information and instructions so that it can hold written conversation with its oper Ator inside the computer this conversation uses thousands of electrical parts many parts are no larger than your fingernail some transistors are so tiny that 50,000 of them will fit in a thimble this computer has been instructed to ask for mathematical problems to be solved it takes much longer for Adrien to type in the problem than it does for the computer to solve it the computer can solve problems many times more difficult than these almost instantly a computer cannot think it's simply L counts electrical signals much the same way as you count the beads of an abacus instead of beads the computer counts electrical signals one by one with a speed of lightning and gives us the right answer computers are often equipped with an electronic screen much like your television set screens work fine for simple problems and solutions but where written records are needed computers give us information on high-speed printers we can understand how a computer works with information if we first examine a more simple machine all all machines are meant to do a job to perform a process we put dirty clothes into a washing machine and it will process them into clean clothes again this machine can do several things so we must tell it what to do and when to do it we call these in instructions a [Music] program a music box has many notes the roller is a program which makes the right note sound at the right time to play a saune what do you think controls this robot's movements the program controlling the processing in the washing machine calls for these clothes to be washed at the right temperature rinsed and spin dried a washing machine processes dirty clothes into clean clothes like most machines it saves us working with our muscles the computer helps us with the work of the Mind by processing information just as the mind the computer needs a way to remember the information it will process it needs a memory a record for a phonograph or the tape for a tape recorder is a kind of memory this music is stored in the grooves of the [Music] record each time the needle is placed on the same spot on the record the same sound is produced this is much the same kind of memory used in computers computers can be programmed for many things for for instance they can sell tickets at a terminal many miles from where the computer is located in order for the computer to sell Tommy a ticket to the basketball game at the sports arena the computer must know the numbers of all the seats and how much each one costs this information which we also call data is punched into cards for the computer to read each hole is a separate bit of information the cards are read by a high-speed reader and the information or data about each seat is transferred to the computer's memory of Mag magnetic tapes or magnetic discs a program is sent to the memory which tells the computer what to do when someone inquires about buying a ticket Tommy and his mother want three seats for next Saturday the date and seat numbers are identified electronically and sent to the computer the seats are still available so Tommy's mother decides to buy the tickets for the family when she buys the tickets the computer sends the information needed to print them it also remembers that the seats have now been sold given information for its memory and a program of what to do the computer has instantly done the data processing needed to sell tickets to the basketball game this is just one small way computers help us save time and work computers allow us to solve more problems s more rapidly and more accurately than ever before they help increase our knowledge about our world computers can map underground layers of Earth to help us find oil they can process checks and credit cards they help to predict the weather help farmers to obtain good crops computers are used in building construction in scheduling transportation in research in industry medicine and science computers help us all over the world and they even help us explore outer space what other work can you think of that computers do 3 2 1 iring command like all these uh these films show uh an example of what whatever the film is about and then they always end with and you know like a rocket taking off and then you know oh the the Space Race so there you go uh let's see uh I'm going to rewind this and Ruby see if I can mute [Applause] this oh I know what to do hold on all right so you can hear me U but you can't hear the speaker uh which is good um at least I don't think you can uh anyways uh Black History Month and today I'm going to show you something good I'm going to show you a film that's 126 years old um and it was discovered by a friend of mine uh Dino Everett at University of Southern California and you did hear my lunch plate let me move that um anyways it was discovered and it was one of these early films 18 1898 is when the film was made uh and it's a short and so it's called something good negro kiss enjoy all right uh so so that was discovered and uh my friend Dino actually showed it like showed the actual film in a uh at a conference that I went to it was nuts um but uh somewhere in Norway they discovered an extended version of it but it's also different like you'll see that the shot is not as tight but it's the same people that are in it so here's something good the director's cut Extended Cut I don't know what you call it anyways uh waiting for this film to rewind uh so anyways um you know early films were these very short little things um and they were shown in storefronts uh mostly because um they didn't make projectors that projected in uh like Giant auditoriums yet and so this was like a novelty thing shown and so there would be footage other types of things that would be shown would be you know like footage of of trains and footage of like really short little narrative things and you saw that the more extended version actually had kind of a narrative like the woman was not interested necessarily in kissing and then there was this kind of back and forth and so anyways fascinating stuff uh all right let me uh thre up a new one yes and this predates the Kirk uhara um Kiss by 100 years or whatever [Music] um all right so I'm threading the projector uh I I would bring the camera closer but it requires that would require three hands and also it would probably unplug the uh the webcam so you get to see me kind of do it this way I've been looking at other webcams that aren't so finicky um and one that run runs on like Bluetooth but boy they're expensive and a little dodgy too the reviews are not great so um this film again from a community college on the coast in North Carolina and so you could tell what they were teaching like that computer one that's almost like a school age level but uh this next one is definitely hospitality industry so you know they probably taught there's probably that program is food preparation program um and so this one is called what is it taking the order yeah taking the order and um it's by our friends at n NM oh what does it say here it's got notes funny moment of truth good dramatizations funny music what is that something looking food gross looking food somebody review I love it all right let's uh sprad this up this is what happens why I often show films while I'm setting this up because it's a little I it's a little bit of a pain so here we go taking the order gross looking food enjoy [Music] you are about to see the moment of truth may I take your order now please yes you certainly may may I take your order sir yes I'd like um are you ready to order now sir yes we're ready but we can't decide what do you suggest yes the moment when the menu meets the order pad that's the Moment of Truth a full order check is no accident it separates the salesman from the order taker which are [Music] you the transaction is complete a happy one for all concerned including our waitress who picks up a nice tip but wait a second what made this such a successful Transaction what did she do right Pat has learned the importance of a thorough knowledge of her menu she makes it a daily Habit to check the special of the day and to note any changes in the items listed she makes sure she knows something about each dish and if the chef comes up with something different she isn't afraid to ask questions she finds out what the ingredients of different dishes are and how long they take to prepare this can be very important when a guest asks for suggestions a good salesman must know his product and Pat does her success is no accident she works at it knowing your menu is important but so is knowing piz may I take your order now let's analyze Mr average guest and find out what influences his choice of items we'll take it for granted he isn't dieting or allergic to anything all right what sells him I just don't know I'd like the undecided Diner is the menu going to help him not much right now it's just confusing him the real salesman in this situation is you you can turn his appetite on and off how by the power of suggestion it just can't seem to make up my mind what's good today did you ever try our specially his Thief stragon off it's cooked in a delicious wine sauce our Chef prepares it exceptionally [Music] well okay sounds great I'll take it thank you well now he might might have been thinking of something less expensive but he was sold the beef stroganov a less skilled waiter might have said it's all good today or D stroganov is good but Roger knows better he understands the AR of suggestion the statement the stroganov is good is nothing more than information the mental picture it creates is colorless but watch did you ever try our specialty beef stroganov it is served with a delicious wine sauce our Chef prepares it exceptionally well this is what is created in the mind's eye of the gu by the power of [Music] suggestion the art of suggestion can work for you throughout the meal for example selling the appetizer notice he does not say would you like an appetizer no he says perhaps you would like to start with our chill tomato juice or with our fresh fruit cup the fresh frood cup sounds very good I'll have that notice that George made his suggestion colorful but he also made it specific he named only two items to give his guest an Easy Choice she still has a choice but it's easier to decide between two items than to pick from five or six now it's time for dessert this should be as easy as giving candy to a baby but it isn't dessert must be sold would you like our homemade hot apple pie or we also have a delicious parfait made with fresh strawberries the parfait sounds wonderful fine and I'll take the pie please and thanks for suggesting it you're welcome thank you they appreciate the suggestion they've been sold a mental picture and they're happy about it oh made hot apple pie M delicious strawberry pait M That's The Power of suggestive selling you'll find it reflected in the size of the check and of your tip that too is the power of suggestion remember her success is not accidental Pat knows her menu and if there's something in it she doesn't understand she's willing to ask for help remember too that your guests are people they want and expect your help with their food selections make your suggestions colorful and limit them to two items at a time to make it easy for your guest to decide a good waiter or waitress can make it a pleasant meal and still pass the moment of truth with a full order and a sizable tip but it isn't accident you have to work at [Music] it all right yeah the the mic died again sorry so at least I'm having a good hair day thanks Thomas um yes so that uh was part of the series uh called uh by um National educational media they did a bunch of hospitality films and we've shown other films from that company short order cookery uh Mr dish machine operator um I think KY counts a lot uh which has Gordon jump in it uh so um great stuff and I have others uh that I'm going to thread up uh so anyways I'm rewinding now because I'm going to try to show all rest of the show we're going to do all film how about that but that what that means is there's going to be these periods where I'm just going to be talking so um but yeah I'm bummed about this microphone I'm have to update I'm not sure if I need to update my computer I don't know I I need to do make some hard decisions um not excited about spending money on when I have a perfectly good what seems to be a perfectly good setup but I don't know this is crapping out ah all right we are almost there so I'm rewinding back on to the Reel and I think um I'm going to show another in the series a cool head for salads so these were gifted To Us by uh like I said um someone who was in town dropping off some stuff and um let's see yeah someone noted that this is how I used to do it when I used to do show oh this one's it's all mangled that's that's like melted okay well let's see what happens all it definitely gets better to break off this so these films would have been shown in a class on or a part of a degree program probably an associate degree program on food preparation or the hospitality industry um so teaching people to be chefs or Cooks um most community colleges offer that program it seems like especially in areas that are touristy like there's one a whole one on uh oops I'm see some dirt stop temporarily all right thread it up um this is if you watch the 16-h hour show or the Thousand minute show that we did there was a lot of this uh going on where I was bouncing around uh cool head M salads all right here we go enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] you find them everywhere they're inexpensive nutritious and colorful they please The Gourmet and the Weight Watcher alike nothing is quite so basic to our modern way of life as the salad and you can earn Smiles of delight from your customers if you just keep a cool head for salads the heart of a green salad is iceberg lettuce your salad starts here with the cleaning and storage of the heads first remove the outer damaged leaves then remove the core with a stainless solid knife and immerse the heads in ice cold water with the core removed the water flows one moment all right it's being problematic um all right so I really wanted to show that um but we're going to have to uh put it on another reel and try it again in the meantime let's learn about desert desert dwellers not desert dwellers desert dwellers [Music] enjoy there are times when the desert might seem Barren almost devoid of animal life but in reality there are many creatures that make it their home most of them are especially adapted to a life in the desert's harsh dry climate which may be extremely hot in summer and cold in Winter the particular area which we are showing is the northeastern part of the Sonoran Desert near Tucson Arizona imagine that you have the eyes of a red tailed hawk cruising boundless skies and exhilarating flight which we humans can never hope to match from the Hawk's Vantage Point high above its nest in a Saro Cactus you might be able to see in a short time if luck is with you some glimpses of desert life which the average human would take weeks or months to observe Hawks are a necessary part of the world's ecology by feeding on the weak and diseased they maintain a population control of the animals upon on which they pray when not engaged in eating their favorite hobby they exercise the slightest Breeze will start their wings flapping in this way they develop strong muscles and a sense of timing so necessary for their future survival sometimes their young Wings carry them almost too high but each day they gain confidence and eventually leave the nest but stay in the area where they are fed by their parents as they learn the technique of hunting [Music] most foxes are ground loving animals but the desert gray is an exception although they usually raise their young in underground burrows in the spring of the Year during the extremely hot days of of Summer they often climb Saros and sleep in the crotch of the arms and like the red tail in Flight see interesting happenings below non-aggressive heila monsters are unique to a small section of Western deserts they are one of only two poisonous lizards in the world and are protected in Arizona due to their Rarity they feed on insects small rodents and bird [Music] eggs they are usually sluggish but when forced can amble along the ground at a fair rate of [Music] [Applause] speed peckies are pig-like animals found only in the [Music] Americas those that occur wild near Tucson have a light colored band of fur around the neck and are called colored peckies although peckies are tough as you can see by their eating of cactus spines and all the oft repeated stories of their unprovoked attacks on humans are unverified when cornered or wounded however their sharp tusks can do great damage they are primarily vegetarians they usually travel in family groups of eight or 10 and have young generally twins at any time during the [Music] year [Music] the other hoofed animal that is comparatively common on the desert is the Blacktail or mule deer this one which was in the habit of watering in a bird bath is a spike Buck which probably means that he is about 1y old with further maturity his antlers will fork and grow additional tines but after he passes the primal of Life the prongs will decrease and with extreme old age he might once more become a [Music] spike the circling red tailed hawk from his vantage point in the sky probably sees Badgers every day but humans know the animal best by seeing spots where gaping holes are left in the ground Badgers are tireless workers ever on the lookout for rodents which form their main food and they rarely travel any distance without trying to excavate a meal from underground although ringtailed cats are not rare they are seldom seen not even by the hawk for they are almost entire enely nocturnal despite the common name they are not cats but have a distant kinship with raccoons as you can see by the actions of this animal it is extremely nervous always on the lookout for danger and ready to disappear at the slightest [Music] disturbance [Music] like the ringtails Bobcats are also nocturnal but in hot summer weather they can sometimes be drawn from hiding if water is available their Foods consist mainly of rabbits and small rodents the desert has Cardinals that are more brilliantly red than their Eastern [Music] relatives the heavy beak is used for cracking seeds their main food it is so strong that few other birds will challenge them even woodpeckers that can chisel holes in tree trunks tolerate them and do not try to drive them away the female cardinal lacks the Brilliance of the spectacular [Music] male gambles Quail are common on the desert and a single pair will sometimes have a brood of 18 or more chicks if all of these survived we would be kneed deep in Quail within a very few years but throughout all of nature there is a surplus of Offspring which permits losses without endangering future populations being ground nesting Birds dangers to baby quail are much greater than to birds that nest in bushes or trees of this brood of young only three or four will reach maturity a number sufficient to maintain a population but not to [Music] overpopulate even the misnamed sparrow hawk which lives primarily on insects comes in to [Music] drink and jack rabbits that can subsist from the moisture in their vegetarian diet will take water when [Music] available the desert cannot boast of large trees and as a result our squirrels are ground loving and live in Burrows in the earth these are antelope ground [Music] squirrels Cactus spines which would painfully puncture a human at the slightest contact do not seem to bother these squirrels they pour through them as though the points were dull although ground loving these diminutive squirrels are capable climbers they will climb mesit to obtain the seeds and have Lookout points to detect an approach ing enemy after A Hard Day's work with no danger in sight except the red tailed hawk high in the sky they like to yawn and [Music] stretch and stretch again road runners are controversial Birds people who see them take a baby quail consider them villains however quail chicks are available for only a few months during the remainder of the Year road runners live on mice lizards scorpions and rats and rats are known to be a quail's worst enemy therefore the bird is an enemy of individual Quail but a benefit to the species road runners lay white eggs in a stick Nest usually placed in Cactus here one of the just hatched chicks begs for food [Music] they are strange ground loving members of The Cuckoo family uniquely Western and cuckoo enough to try to carry more food than the beak will [Music] hold at least he tried the young leave the nest several days before being capable of flying and beg food from the watchful [Music] parents after a chilly night they warm their bodies by spreading feathers on the back and letting sunlight hit the [Music] skin in this next series of pictures rarely photographed a mother roundtail ground squirrel tries valiantly to protect her young almost loses the battle but wins out in the end and the bird goes off to look for easier food if more underground burrows had been available a different Escape might have been possible so more Burrows are [Music] made the young watch the work while they wrestle and play until a danger signal caused by a rapid stamping of feet is carried through the [Music] ground road runners can't go into Burrows but gopher snakes can so with the red tailed hawk circling above and an enemy on the ground surface that can go into Burrows a reason for the large Broods of rodents immediately becomes apparent there must be an Expendable Surplus so that some survive each narrow Escape tends to make the young more alert to the numerous dangers that exist but in the lower forms of animals the nagging worry of an impending calamity does not seem to exist few if any are subject to nervous [Music] breakdowns [Music] white-winged doves are the largest of the four kinds inhabiting the Tucson [Music] area but forget the idea that doves are peaceful they fight with raised wings and can give a painful [Music] Blow The Rock squirrel is the largest of the three ground loving squirrels that reside here they are very prolific and their vegetarian diet makes them congregate around Farms or habitations where plants are domestically raised the state of California estimates that ground squirrels and Gophers destroy 10% of the state's Farm produce each [Music] year red tailed hawks road runners golden eagles and other Predators feed upon them and tend to keep their numbers at a normal [Music] level Cactus blooms are usually spectacular and could well be included with the most beautiful flowers in the world this is a fish hook pin cushion Hedgehog all hedgehogs have beautiful blooms prickly pear varieties have Blooms of varied colors this species has yellow blooms and large pads beaver tail named for the similarity of the pads to a beaver's tail this Cactus can be deceiving spines infinitesimal tiny but [Music] painful Diamond Backs are the most common Rattlers in the [Music] area note the rings on the tail this coral snake and the Rattler are the only dangerous snakes in Arizona coral snakes are rarely seen as they are [Music] nocturnal these lizards are called collared due to the rings around the neck the milliped is usually seen after rains the perfect rhythm of so many legs is [Music] fantastic desert tortoises also stay hidden during most of the year but the first summer rains bring them out of hiding they are [Music] vegetarians if winter rains hit the ground at just the right time and a sufficient quantity of water is absorbed by the Earth the spring flowers often blanket the country these are desert marigolds later in this same field after the maragold have gone to seed harvester ants transport seeds underground and probably help keep the soil porous which AIDS water penetration some of the seeds so planted Sprout and Aid ground cover growth [Music] brittle Bush and pink owl Clover are also plants which bloom in the [Music] spring golden poppies can occur in small clumps or in single [Music] plants or as solid fields of yellow Barrel cactuses bloom in the late spring and summer recurved spines give this plant the name of Fish Hook Barrel the larger plants lean toward the Southwest from this characteristic they are sometimes called Compass [Music] Cactus May and June are the months to see these spectacular flowers which Bloom on Arizona's largest Cactus the Saro Cactus each year the thrilling cycle of Life repeats itself both in the animals and vegetation of our fascinating Arizona [Music] desert all right um I had threaded up we're going to go over you know whatever I was I thread it up another film but I'll save this until next week uh I did Poe math and figuring out the the duration um here's a note to instructors uh please comment on the quality of the movie or film strip that you are checking using by checking the appropriate statements this will enable us to serve your needs better thank you film is obsolete should be discarded film content is lacking inappropriate film is appropriate film is excellent film is torn film needs to be clean film needs a leader uh film needs to be spliced all right we're going to give uh the salads film a shot um one more time so the problem with it was that it did not have what we call a tight pack the film was kind had loose points on the Reel and what that means is if you put tension on it then it slips and so that's what so this needs tension to move the film through the gate it has a sprocketed wheel for just measuring when a frame goes through but it's really not using that to move the film through it's using uh tension to move it through and so that's problematic uh anyways let's try cool head salad one more time enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] you find them everywhere they're inexpensive nutritious and colorful they please The Gourmet and the Weight Watcher alike nothing is quite so basic to our modern way of life as the salad and you can earn Smiles of delight from your customers if you'll just keep a cool head for salad sigh it's not going to work um yeah I'm going to have to put this on another real but not for today anyways that's the way it is um um sometimes we can watch films without any problem sometimes we uh can't so there you go yes it's not a salad day today um but Monday boy we're going to watch some more films it's going to be awesome um and this is what's crazy okay so I mentioned uh something good and I mentioned Dino Everett uh and uh him discovering the film and then showing it live he just emailed me like out of the blue about something totally different uh where he said hey do you have this film did you know that that Paul Rubin is in it so I'm going to pull that film and we're going to watch that next week so there you go crazy crazy small world crazy coincidences that's what we love here at a Geeks if you love what we saw today and you know in spite of the technical problems which just seems to be part of the deal here at a Geeks you know when you have when you're you're spanning more than 126 years of Technology things are going to go wrong so anyway uh if you like what you saw hit the thumbs up hit the like um you can donate via the super thanks button you can also go to ko-fi.com avgeeks avgeeks uh to get us some delicious coffee uh you can also go to patreon.com uh slav Geeks those are ways to support us uh all right everybody have a great rest of your day and weekend and like I said we'll see you Monday everybody take care bye
