is for that for I did not expect uh someone to be on the potty um uh but that is the thing about home movies um sometimes that happens and I'm sure with video well I know with video it happens even more uh because the camera just would be going and uh at that age uh kids sometimes are proud to be on the potty um so um anyways hey I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show uh I was not sure if I could do a live show today because of a doctor's appointment that just popped up um because to that doctor's appointment I am very uncomfortable but it was very important to me excuse me what gives me great joy is doing this show live for you and you know reading your comments and interacting with you so in spite of feeling like crap I'm here and this is a temporary feeling like crap this is not going to be the future is going to be a world of not feeling like this so than things are looking up um I won't go into any more detail some of you can piece it together and have have pieced it together but uh let's see where was I going to go with all this um yesterday I showed some nursing films and uh I have not been able to look at the comments to like to see how traumatizing the last two films were uh in a world of aphasia and pain and its alleviation uh and so uh yeah I don't know how it went over um and then you know today I was going to show more stuff about health um but I decided not to uh decided to do a live show and uh I also have more news um so who took down um my uh public domain screening show on the 1 it was Warner Brothers uh claiming um Buster Keaton's cameraman which fell into public domain on January 1st uh and so the rules of YouTube are not based on the rules of the land it's based on whoever claims it and they love uh cow to to Big content like Warner Brothers or Discovery Warner as they are known now so uh I try to follow the rules and I get slapped for it uh very frustrating but um let's go ahead and I have a film set up on the scanner behind me let's go ahead and watch that this will put me in a good mood um and I have to change the title of this uh have to change a lot here one second oh my gosh everything so I was having problems with this machine on the first and uh uh uh I finally got it up and running I just basically left it on for two days straight and it's finally sorted itself out all right so this is some cold chicken I got from the refrigerator I love chicken for breakfast and it's good for you too hey bro don't fly away until you eat something you might not make it want some tortillas andol you mean to tell me beans and cheese and rice are things you eat for breakfast sometimes and sometimes we have cereal or eggs hey bird where are you going ham cheese peanut but toast waffles grapefruit cereal milk eggs andon call me wait a minute why is everybody so eager to get me to eat something in the morning tell them cowboy cowboy these kids the really bananas over breakfast it's frightening smart little partners aren't they Yahoo they know how to get there get up and go in the morning but they all have different things surely that can't be right what you eat for breakfast doesn't really matter that you eat something is what [Music] counts okay there I just ate a worm now will you get off my back everybody sure bird we were just trying to be friendly wait a minute I feel radiant bursting with an abundance of energy I feel as if I'm growing you were right something to eat in the morning is fantastic hey I want all of you to try a worm oh worm I don't want to eat where are they much covers the same territory as uh one doesn't Kathy eat breakfast um where she's exposed to all different types of options for eating um less about what is specifically considered breakfast food and more about just eat something uh so you have energy for the rest of the day uh what do we got what do we got um let's learn about obtaining facts enjoy what is a scientific fact something we can see touch is it any information that comes to us through our senses perhaps suppose we try to describe facts to someone else this mouse has two eyes Fact one tail fact its fur is smooth fact or is it maybe it feels smooth compared to this rock but compared to this glass surface the mouse may feel lumpy even slightly rough the word smooth is subjective it's not clearly defined perhaps we should restrict our definition of facts to those observations which people can describe to one another without confusion think about the facts obtained by a newborn baby his mother may look to him like this is such an impression a fact what about this image is our impression of a circle a fact watch does it still look like a circle the information provided by our eyes may be correct yet become distorted as our brain interprets it here's another example the two horizontal lines are they straight or are they curved we can arrive at a judgment with the help of a simple instrument a ruler many times in science we need instruments to help us arrive at facts with our naked senses it's hard to tell which of two similar objects is heavier we can get more precise facts with the balance assuming that we're skilled in using it a pair of tweezers keeps moisture from our hands off the weights a glass door Shields the balance from air currents the idea is to avoid distorting facts as we obtain them suppose we make a mistake in using the balance we can check ourselves by repeating our measurements or asking someone else to such principles of measurement are followed in obtaining key facts in science facts such as measurements of the speed of light these values given in kilom per second were obtained by different experimenters over a period of more than a 100 years using a variety of methods when facts are obtained using different instruments and different methods and are found to agree we have more confidence in them not only do instruments offer greater Precision in obtaining facts but they extend our senses giant telescopes help us obtain facts about stars and galaxies too far away to be seen by the naked eye at The Other Extreme facts about objects too small to be detected with our uned senses are brought To Us by various kinds of microscopes obtaining facts by such indirect means puts great demands on our knowledge and judgment for instance when viewing things under high magnification it's necessary to use intense light how does this concentrated energy affect biological specimens we'll demonstrate a couple drops of human blood exposed to the intense energy from the substage light the blood dries out in a matter of seconds this time we'll prepare another sample and cover it with the second and slide you take several minutes before the blood dries out long enough to observe red blood cells intact a biologist learns a variety of ways to avoid distorting facts sometimes Distortion is unavoidable here a tissue sample is being sliced into thin sections so that they can be viewed under a microscope each tissue section is stained with a d to make some parts more visible when we view such a specimen we must remember what preparation it has gone through to help us judge what it was like originally in such cases it becomes necessary to obtain information a step removed from the observed facts such information is properly termed interpretation rather than fact although it's not always easy to decide where facts end and interpretation begins consider this astronomer as he examines data from a distant star under a microscope these highly magnified rather fuzzy sets of lines are Spectra from two different light sources the dark band across the middle is a spectrum of a distant star obtained with the a of of a telescope the staright was directed to a spectrograph here the light was spread out to form a spectrum the Spectrum was recorded on a photographic plate the same plate we saw under the microscope once the spectrum of the star was photographed the spectrograph was aimed not through the telescope but at a small light source to one side here light was given off by The Vapor of a heated glowing element in this case iron light from the iron Vapor passed through the spectrograph forming a spectrum of iron on the same plate as was used for recording the spectrum of the star remember that the dark band is the spectrum of the star the sets of lines above and below are the spectrum of the vaporized iron both Spectra have been photographed on the same slide so they can be paired these two microscopic Spectra these sets of lines are what an astronomer sees when examining the slide viewing the facts he notices something for each line in the iron Spectrum there is a corresponding line in the Stellar Spectrum from this the astronomer infers that there is vaporized iron present in the distant star an interpretation it would be described as an interpretation by the astronomer himself in dealing with other astronomers in a newspaper or other mass media however the presence of iron in the star might be described as a fact this could be misleading to anyone who didn't know that what the astronomer had actually seen was simply two sets of lines on a glass slide this is why scientists must be critical of facts obtained from other people's research an astronomer's report states that a certain star produces as much energy in the form of x-rays as the sun does at all wavelengths is this fact or interpretation we can evaluate the information if the article contains references to the methods by which the data was obtained people make similar evaluations of reports in every area of science a biologist May write an article describing the growth of a virus for us to evaluate his report we must know how it was obtained in this case it was based upon information obtained with an electron microscope the many spheres seen under the microscope rather the two-dimensional representations of spheres supposedly show viruses in the process of being formed how much of this information might another scientist accept as fact how much as interpretation obtaining facts in science is a complex process it involves many skills skills in using the senses in using instruments in using our judgment to interpret the [Music] results it's a continuing process that helps us arrive at meaningful useful [Music] facts pretty great uh love me a science film from the um late 60s uh so quite coincidentally for some reason a stack of films uh were on the uh kitchen table here at the archive and so I was like oh what are these for I don't know so uh I went through them and the first one that we watched from that stack was uh what's for breakfast uh this is the second one so this is coincidentally related to what we just saw now um this came from Buffalo Public Schools and I know that Buffalo Public Schools would sometimes if the the title was clear clipped the beginning was clipped they would put on tack on something that uh kind of a homemade title that was on burlap with these beautiful 3D letters um so I don't know what this film is really titled uh it is a British uh information film and uh it is called opinions how formed at least that's what they call it uh we'll see um enjoy well got to start at the bottom again with something else oh stuff on you bit I know but it's something no one can be in two minds about it's accepted by everyone quite apart from its being the law everyone look I'll write to the exchange for you you still got a fortnite fortnite I never thought I'd live to see the look take this what's it in Aid of I don't know it's a flag day I always give to Flag Day nspcc National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children there you are if you were the only person in England who thought people shouldn't be cruel to Children it' be a poor lookout for the children but what [Music] happens more and more individuals who saw children uncared for and Ill treated thought something ought to be done in the end a lot of them got together and formed a group The nspcc to get their opinions across it couldn't be done overnight it took a lot of organization a lot of trouble spreading the opinion of the group getting more members a lot of time forming committees spreading the organization and organizations cost money to run they had to launch appeals and get more and more money until in the end they got what they wanted done there's one example a group which has power to do what it wants built up from a lot of individuals who all have the one opinion the biggest group of organized opinion in the country is in the trade Union must it over the machine this damn here get busy myself something more to be done about it something's got to be done about the air conditioning plant in that bigger Workshop that's not just my opinion every man that works here thinks the same and it's up to the works committee to put our opinion before the management here here I move then that we approach the management with this request I'll second then yes I know I know there's nothing you can't do in a democracy it sounds all right it sounds wonderful but you know it doesn't mean a thing why not because it's all on paper it's all talk you've told me how people's opinions are formed then you say that all I have to do is get together a group of people with the same opinion as myself and spread it and then what happens talk talk and more talk I'm sick and tired of talk you say the Machinery is already there but has anybody ever been able to use it have you ever triy it well you ever try to get your union to do anything try to get something out of a local Authority try to make your opinion felt in a political party even join the political party will have you all I can say is other people have other people whose opinions may be no better than yours but stronger have seen to it that they got what they wanted well of force just an individual who believed that slavery be abolished and he got what he wanted done Florence Nightingale who was determined to better the conditions in military hospital and she got what she wanted done Elizabeth fry wanted prison reform and she got prison reform Lord sharpr wanted Factory reform and he got Factory reform yes but that's all past history now well it all affects the way you live today yes but has anything a bloke like me ever thought made any difference in our lifetime have been parliamentary elections in our lifetime haven't there and people that you and people like you elected have passed acts of parliament well legislation which is simply the result of public opinion being brought to bear on Parliament if the citizen isn't getting what he wants done he writes to his MP and if he still doesn't get what he wants he votes for someone else next time he gets the chance there's so much that needs to be done so many things you want freedom from poverty freedom from disease freedom from squalor and ignorance Freedom From War if you want these things you can spread your opinion to other people other people who are influenced As You Are by what they read in the papers by what they read in books by what they hear in conversation by what they hear in speeches on the radio by what they see on the screen when you've spread your opinion you can form groups and unions and political parties and demand what you want and damn will see to it that you make your opinion felt well it's all very interesting are you here to explain this stuff to everyone good Lord now I'm just a visitor like yourselves what do you mean you don't get paid for saying all that no no no I don't work here actually I'm a film commentator this is my day off well [Applause] goodbye I love it um I'm going to look
