is for that that where am I hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and uh that was a beautiful I don't know if that was Kodak Chrome like what was that that might have been Koda Chrome um of the Northwest In Bloom that it was licensed and distributed by Bell and how probably part of their library that you could buy or rent uh if you bought a projector from them um but uh beautiful footage of the Northwest the United States which is probably blanketed in ice and snow right now um I know that some film collector friends of mine have been having power outages and lots of uh very very cold weather so um if you're based in the Northwest I hope you're doing okay that you have power and that you're warm and dry that's what we want all right so behind me I have a film scanner setup and uh right there and uh so let's watch a film that I got from the Forestry Department at NC State they were getting rid of a bunch of films and they said hey do you want these so so uh all these are about probably made by warehouser or by some paper manufacturer who's like let's work with the forest and and help cultivate it so we can cut it down and use it and turn into toilet paper all right so here's to work with the forest enjoy it'll take a set for it to uh load up on on to work with the forest a film from the Society of American Foresters to work in the forest is to work in a peaceful place to work in the forest is to work in a place that's tranquil and unhurried a place that's removed from the bustle and the noise and the confusion of everyday [Applause] [Music] life [Applause] [Music] it's always been that way 3/4 of the forest lands Columbus found are still here peaceful and unhurried but there's a paradox the forests seem to have changed very little but the understanding the managing the practice of forestry that's changed a great [Music] deal to work in the forest is quiet work to work with the forest the Southern Pine the Western fur the Eastern hardwood the California Redwood to work with these and the others that's a difficult and complex job the idea of forest management first took Route here in the mountains of North Carolina the class of 1906 at the builtmore forest school it was the first school in this country the founder was Dr Carl shank he ran the school and taught classes 6 days a week in 2 seven different subjects he even wrote the textbooks most of them Mornings in the classroom afternoons in the woods the school drove home the point that forestry is a lot more than just counting and cutting the trees even at the turn of the century they recognized the value of intensive management as I understand it then uh you started uh a sample capability area delineation with a quad Sierra City quad is that right right and how is it going okay what we've done is we've taken that quad as the first one to test out the process that we've used the builtmore students would hardly recognize Forest management today Jerry lson is one of a growing number of women in the profession she's Deputy supervisor of the Tahoe National Forest in California and she recognizes as any Forester does that the job involves much more than being in the woods or conducting a staff meeting a very important part of the job of the forest manager is working with local governmental agencies and jurisdictions and the private land owners who have land within the national forest these agencies and people have objectives and programs of their own and one must get out into the community become involved in community activities and organizations get the sense of the feeling of the community residents as well as the agencies and elected Personnel that represent them we just don't have time to to get the Forester feels the pressures of time too in the next 50 years the demand for wood in this country is expected to double and even today the pressures are there people pressures people demanding more and expecting more from the forest lands of this country those pressures create an imperative for intelligent [Music] management Timber production agriculture Recreation and local politics all these things create more pressure per acre and if Forest lands are to survive and serve all these needs then it's up to the forest manager to find a [Music] [Applause] [Music] way [Music] [Applause] and just when everything seems nailed down there are new pressures at gford pincho National Forest in Washington there is Mount St Helens the eruptions brought death and rescue 34,000 Acres of fire and sightseers and scientists it all had to be managed Foresters are trained and educated to protect Forest lands but one course they don't teach in forestry school is how to manage a volcano there's quite a bit of smoke yes all of the ground parties have left the red zone at this time at Yale University the curriculum covers just about everything else Professor David Smith teaches Silva culture and he takes the broad view of the profession forestry is every form of appropriate human knowledge applied to the management of forests it Embraces everything from economics to biology to chemistry to physics to engineering even to psychology it is a kind of application of liberal education in the woods the objective of it is to ensure that forests become a Perpetual source of human goods and services someone said a long time ago that the forest was built with the EGS uh the reason for this is that uh the trees uh tend to Li live up to the limit of the available growing space which is set by Smith wrote the book on modern silver culture and he spends his time refining the theory and preaching the gospel around the world there now this means that if we want to replace an old forest with a new one or modify one which exists uh now uh we we can do it only by creating vacancies now this is nothing more than uh take the Forester emulates nature speeding up the process to create healthier and more productive Forest lethal [Music] disturbances emulating nature is a big job for the forest industry the research Forester looks for the superior tree tall and straight holding out the promise for the future branches are grafted onto root stock to create an entire Orchard of superior trees Coastal Lali Pine grown by West Veo in South Carolina seege from this one Orchard will produce 3 million seedlings they'll be used for regeneration knowing when and where to cut what to grow knowing about botany genetics engineering all these things come into play all these things and a lot more to do the job right the Forester needs access to current accurate [Music] [Music] information computers digitizers plotters information technology is [Music] harest [Music] this technology is harnessed and used as one tool to help strike the balance of pressures not all the pressures come from people and business after all the forest is a home a refuge for wildlife striking the balance of nature is important protecting the creatures of the forest and protecting the watershed this tool is modern Forest [Music] management more and more these concerns are reaching the private landowner a case in point is Sugar Springs Farm a tree farm in Grandam New Hampshire the owner is Merl shanis and he recognizes the value of forest management and calls on Experts to provide the help he needs crisis so we think he probably in pretty good shape to put out 2,000 Taps and still retain the Vigor of the trees how many parts of wood burning the Sugar House well it takes about 30 cords per year where do you get it from some of that you see Stanley koville and Joe smer provide the advice on managing the farm Saw Timber firewood Recreation and Wildlife Management all are part of the development plan for the farm here too the balance needs to be struck what you got Jo SMA is an extension Forester working for the State of New Hampshire koville is a private consultant both bring specific areas of knowledge to the problems of the private land owner just guessing it looks like and both are members of the Society of American Foresters more than 20,000 professionals public and private Educators and students researchers and administrators all using their knowledge to improve the future of forest resources good future crop tree tree will be worth about $50 for shanis that future can spell loss or profit depending on how he manages today what are we talking about in Stanley koville gives a professional prediction about that future well if you had a 100 of those per acre 300 well you'll have you'll have 500 board feet for per tree M uh give it another give it 40 years and 4 500 5,000 an [Music] acre 40 years seems like a long time but the professional knows that to achieve positive results a long time off plans have to be made now work has to be done today working in the forest that quiet peaceful place is no longer good enough to work with the forest that's what's needed and that's what modern forestry is all [Music] about [Music] that's what we call a public relations piece um that talks about you know we're Foresters and you know the the percentage of Forestry force that still exists from when Christopher Columbus discovered America and and all that it's like yeah there's there's some PR dollars there um let's see what do we got next uh cornet our good friends cornet um Midwest literature the farm background this sounds really fascinating so hold on to your hat enjoy [Music] the Midwest is a region of cold Winters a region of hot [Music] summers of huge lakes and rivers of rich farmlands of small towns and of busy cities there is no sharp difference between the Midwest and any other region of the United States yet here there has developed a distinctly different literature a literature whose point of view alternates between love of Nature and fear of nature between disdain of Midwestern people and values and faith in midwestern rightness and goodness this ambivalence is most evident in that Midwest literature that deals with farming and Rural Life the Indiana poetry of James whitcom Riley the Wisconsin stories of Hamlin Garland the plains novels of AA rvog and the Prairie novels of Willa among these works there is a Unity of local Wilderness and farmland a Unity of activity taming the Wilderness putting new land to the plow yet describing similar scenes and activities the writers took different views of farm life consider James whitcom Riley writer of such poems as the Raggedy man and Home Folks during Riley's happy childhood the family cabin in Greenfield Indiana was enlarged from this comfortable home young James was sent to a public school in view of his Pleasant childhood it seems logical that Riley's poetry was sentimental and folksy his subjects the family at home and at prayer the beauty of Nature and the old swimming hole yet Riley had seen another side of Midwestern life traveling as an Entertainer and Medicine Show salesman separated from his family by disagreements he endured great hardship and he shared the misery of Indiana's Poor Farm people later as a poet Riley wrote lines that denied hardship lines like these from a vision of summer the air and the Sun and the Shadows were wedded and made as one and the winds Ran Over The Meadows as little children run Riley knew the difficulties of Rural Life but he showed midwesterners a beauty and serenity often forgotten in the Grim struggle for existence scenes of Riley's youth resemble the Wisconsin setting where Hamlin Garland was raised in the 1860s and 70s but Garland's Viewpoint differs from Riley's his books including main traveled roads and Son of the middle border are openly bitter and sardonic Garland returned to the farm after studying in the East and he found that despite the beauty of the land Rural Life could ruin a man's hopes and his character in his story up the Garland described a young man's return to his farm home a brother who remained on the Farm speaks to his City brother life ain't worth very much to me I'm too old to take a new start I'm a dead failure I come to the conclusion that life's a failure for 99% of us you can't help me now it's too late this is the midwestern farmer that Hamlin Garland showed us imagine the Midwest as an endless plane from Kansas Illinois it stretches far into the Canadian North God Alone knows how far from the Mississippi River to the Western Rockies miles without number endless beginningless this is the land of AA rag in his great novel Giants in the Earth rvog became a teacher at St Olive's College in Minnesota after having been a fisherman in Norway a farmand in South Dakota relatives of rbags had settled the terrifying Baron dtas and in his writing he traced the path of their journey and the life they LED as settlers a tragic incident occurred his 5-year-old son Paul fell to his death and this merged with stories rvog had heard about the brooding hopelessness of Norwegian settlers traveling the midwestern Plains in the best of Ula rog's work the Midwest is a mystical land where men's Destinies are Guided by mysterious powers like the ancient gods of Norway rvog told tragic stories with unique immigrant overtones and Hamlin Garland's Farm stories are very deliberately anti-romantic James witam Riley's Farm poetry is very deliberately romantic these authors never achieved special greatness like will a Cather author of o Pioneers my Antonia and one of ours Willa's girlhood home may still be seen in Red Cloud Nebraska there during the late 19th century she saw the last remnants of pioneer life and she tried through writing to keep the Pioneer Spirit from being lost the setting of several Cather novels was the town of Red Cloud and the surrounding Prairie the people European immigrants and cther contrasted the hot blooded and suspicion of central Europeans with the coolness of settlers from northern Europe there was in those early days a wildness and uncertainty about the people and the land and she mourned its passing and immortalized it Willa brought a Nostalgia a Detachment and a great talent to the literature of the Midwest farm and she made the Midwest meaningful to all English-speaking people the pale Cold Light of the winter Sunset did not beautify it was like the light of Truth itself when the Smoky clouds hung low in the west and the red sun went down behind them leaving a pink flush on the snowy roofs and the blue drifts then the wind sprang up aresh with a kind of bitter song as if it said this is reality whether you like it or not Willa Cather on the midwestern Farmland Cather Riley Garland and rvog Drew vivid pictures of the generation of farmers that followed the frontier when Farmers came to the Midwest the region began to develop its unique character and later when Midwestern people began to see themselves as existing in the heartland of a great nation they began to question their values and Customs then the midwestern writers tried to judge which values and Customs could resist the corrosion beginning in the cities and towns as well as in the Farmland during the 20th [Music] century yeah why wow uh uh wake up everybody wake up that was uh that was incredibly dry in incredibly dry I like the footage where they're they're taking a book and they're setting it on the table or they're panning across bookshelf wow uh yeah I mean you could talk about In Cold Blood that's more interesting right and that's in the mid West I think was it could be wrong all right I got to I got to sex it up a little bit literally all right this this film is about sex and um so it's going to use sexual terms it's going to talk about sex it's going to be explicit you're going to see some sex um I know I could save this for the after dark show but I think you guys are ready for for it here it is um you know please don't report Us on YouTube please don't here it [Music] [Applause] is the science of marine life is among the most fascinating of the branches of biology knowledge of the life patterns of certain marine animals can often be applied to the study of higher forms of life in Marine environments of Seashore and tide pool live the purple sea urchins sea urchins have long been used as experimental animals in studies of reproduction and genetics these invertebrates are classified as echinoderms a name taken from two Greek words meaning spiny and skin the many spin-like structures are responsible for this descriptive name the purple seurin is a widely distributed species adults generally measure between 1 and 2 in in diameter and are radially symmetrical the Sexes are separate though difficult to distinguish even after dissection a male specimen is on the right female on the left five reproductive organs gonads radiate from the oral cavity the female gonads ovaries produce OVA or egg cells by removing a portion of an exposed ovary we can obtain some of the OVA under the microscope the OVA or eggs are easily distinguished this time we remove a portion of a male gonad the tested T soon the fluid secreted by the test appears in this fluid are literally millions of sperm cells within the test the sperm cells are relatively immobile for a more detailed view of the male sex cell we'll use a higher magnification of the electron microscope as shown by these three specimens the sperm cell consists of a Slender tail and a head which measures about 3 microns in diameter now a rarely seen cross-section through the head to reveal its delicate anatomy in structures at the base are concentrations of sugars the oxidation of sugars provides energy for the vigorous movement of the sperm most of the head is nucleus and contains the hereditary materials the DNA of the cell in the tip is an enzyme that acts to perforate the the female egg cell and provides entrance for the sperm resulting in fertilization the tiny sperm cells upon contact with seawater begin their characteristic rapid swimming motion through the beating action of their fella or tails the role played by the sperm in fertilization can be clearly demonstrated in this experiment we place mature female sea urchins into a tank of sea waterer now we introduce a freshly dissected SE urch in test the whitish liquid spermatic fluid containing numerous sperm cells disperses over the females the presence of sperm appears to act as a stimulus to the females which begin to ovulate by passing fluid containing masses of OVA into the water this stimulation also takes place in reverse that is the presence of OVA in the seawater will stimulate the excretion of sperm atic fluid this same phenomenon occurs in the natural habitat of the sea urgin the breeding season usually begins in August at this time the milky white secretion of the gonads in which the eggs are suspended is passed from the female's body this process ovulation releases anywhere from 150 to 250,000 eggs an hour which are dispersed through the water aided by currents and wave motion numerous eggs can be seen in this photomicrographic view as the eggs come in contact with mature male seurin the testes are stimulated spermatic fluid is released in quantity into the sea these are the first motion pictures of this fascinating phenomenon as it occurs in nature during the breeding season fluids containing sperm cells and eggs Cloud the tide pool where the sea urchins live but to observe the actual process of fertilization we must return to the laboratory from our living specimens we select a mature female part of the test or protective covering of the animal may be removed to expose the ovaries we then place the animal over the mouth of a beaker filled with sea water a few drops of potassium chloride are sufficient to stimulate the activity of the ovaries to produce ripe eggs some of the eggs can be rinsed from the white fluid and placed under the microscope in this closeup of a single egg the protective membrane surrounding the ovom is seen as a light colored ring while the nucleus is the small light area now we've placed some spermatic fluid on the ovom within seconds the sperm cells gather densely around the membrane of the egg cell the underlying cause of this attraction is a chemical stimulus to demonstrate this attraction chemotaxis will begin with fluid containing live egg cells next spermatic fluid containing live sperm is dropped in the watch glass what follows is dramatically shown in time-lapse photography the sperm cells move toward and concentrate around the mass of egg cells in the center of the watch glass this time instead of live egg cells we'll use crystals of gyog gamon a chemical extracted from purple sea urchin egg cells gyog gamon crystals are made up of complex protein molecules when the crystals are dissolved in sea water the sperm cells are attracted just as they were to the live egg cells such experiments have indicated that gyog gamone is the substance that attracts sperm to the ovam actual fertilization is about to take place along the right edge of the ovom as the sperm perforates the egg membrane what happens during this process is best shown in electron photomicrographs here is a sperm at the moment of contact with with the ovam the pointed structure extending from the head at the right is believed to contain lipon an enzyme which can dissolve the 's protective membrane allowing the head of the sperm to enter the ovam as this occurs the female sex cell begins to develop a protruding structure seen at the upper left called the receptive cone on the surface of the cone a tiny sperm is visible the sperm sperm cell is more or less being pulled through this cone here the head of the sperm cell is emerging from the inner surface of the receptive cone it will proceed toward the nucleus of the ovam where fertilization will take place once fertilization of the ovom by a single sperm occurs there develops around the egg cell another membrane called the fertilization membrane the formation and thickening of the membrane may be easily observed development of the fertilization membrane is rapid usually taking about 20 seconds the thick fertilization membrane does not react to the enzyme lipsin so as we see in this closer view it cannot be penetrated by other sperm cells the streaming cytoplasm of the fertilized egg or zygote now under go a series of chemical and physical changes as It prepares for cleavage or division of the egg into an increasing number of cells after about half an hour the first cleavage occurs as the chromosomes in the nucleus are duplicated and the cytoplasm is divided through the furrowing of the cell membrane the resulting cells are called blastomeres the process of cleavage is repeated to produce four blastomeres in the third division of cells in the developing sea urchin embryo eight cells are produced subsequent cleavage produces a blastula or Hollow ball within which is a structure called the blasto seal or segmentation cavity the blastula is not evident in these pictures because we very gently flattened the developing embryo onto the slide so as to observe the process of cleavage more clearly as cleavage goes on more and more cells are produced by simple division mitosis as CLE leage continues and the cells are doubled 16 32 64 and so on gastrulation takes place gastrulation is a complex process whereby layers of cells are moved into the interior of the blastula after gastrulation cells of various body tissues and structures are formed through differentiation this rapid development of the embryo continues for several days by the fifth day the tiny sea urchin is a microscopic free swimming larvae it is bilaterally symmetrical both halves of the body structure are identical at 10 days the larvae has grown to about 4 fths of a millimet in length it will soon undergo metamorphosis during which it will become radially symmetrical a body form typical of several invertebrate classes at 20 days the test or outer shell appears as well as spines and tube feet characteristic of the adult during metamorphosis the sea urchin has changed from a swimming bilaterally symmetrical larva to a radially symmetrical ad adapted to life in shallow ocean waters or Tide Pools after maturation the sea urchin embeds itself into a rock which then becomes the urchin's permanent home because of its high rate of reproduction and the relative ease with which its fertilization and developmental processes may be studied the sea urchin has become a highly valued experimental animal in studies of genetics and embryonic development [Music] pretty hot and heavy there um it makes me go like o like getting my feet and like swimming around in a tide pool and it's like it's like why what is this film that's on it's like all that sex that's going on um yeah all right I got a film uh another film set up on the uh film scanner uh let's see if I can get it to work uh it's the title I'm not 100% sure but it's like table I think it's the table donkey and the stick I'm not 100% on that but we'll see all right enjoy [Music] there was once upon a time a tayor who had three sons [Music] today it was the turn of the eldest son to make sure their goat had eaten all she wanted before bringing her back inside because the goat supplied enough milk for all of them it was important that she be well [Music] fed goat he asked do you want more grass not a leaf more can I eat she replied said the sun she's eating so much not a leaf more she'll touch but then cried the goat I'm hungry still hungry I've had no food so went without you lied to me no said the son but so angry was the tailor he ordered his son away and then told his second son to take the goat out to [Music] pasture when the goat had eaten her [Music] fill she said it was time to go home said the son the goat can eat no more poor hungry gold wretched son [Music] [Applause] leave no more can I eat said the [Music] goat but this time when the goat said no more can I eat the tayor then knew that the goat had lied and his sons had told the truth [Music] but his sons were gone and no one knew where to find them the tayor was left all alone and very sad some years later the eldest son who had been learning how to make furniture grew lonesome for home and his [Music] father he said farewell to the master Craftsman who had taught him then as a Parting Gift the master brought him a little magic table and said just say little table set yourself with this I'll have enough food all my life thought the Sun [Music] he set off for home to show his father the little magic [Music] table at an inn along the way he stopped to eat the inkeeper invited him to a share of the food at the other table no I can feed myself he replied little table set [Music] yourself I'll part this young fool from his magic table said the inkeeper to himself [Music] and in place of the magic table he left an ordinary little table that looked exactly the [Music] same to have his son home again I was given this magic little table the son explained which sets itself with delicious food and enough for all the Second Son since leaving home had been learning from a Miller how to grind wheat into flour he had learned what he could and was now ready to return home but first the Miller wished to give him a gift a very gifted [Music] donkey say Brickle brick pull an ear get a gold coin say Brickle Brit pul a tail you see thank you he said but is it truly for me he [Music] asked it came to pass on his way home he stopped to eat at the same Inn where his brother's table had been [Music] stolen [Music] Brickle [Music] breit that night the inkeeper LED away the donkey which could drop gold coins and replaced it with an ordinary donkey which looked the [Music] same so back home when all had gathered to watch the second son's donkey drop gold coin together they wrote a letter warning the third brother dear brother the wicked inkeeper robbed us on the way home when the youngest son received the letter he too wished to return home and he showed it to the master woodworker who had been teaching him his skills but first the master wished to give him a gift in this sack is a stick if someone harms you say stick out of the sack and it will beat them say into the sack and it will stop now the third son found the Inn where he knew his two brothers had been [Music] robbed said the inkeeper shall I move your sack no no replied the third son there is no treasure so precious as that which I guard in my sack I'll pour him much wine thought the inkeeper that will make him [Music] sleepy the third son pretended to drink and pretended to fall [Music] asleep stick up out of the [Music] sack stick into the [Music] sack then said the third son give back what you stole for my brothers or what once again I'll have the stick beer dance on your [Music] head [Music] little table set yourself Brickle Brit from then on the life of the tayor with his three sons was filled with joy and [Music] contentment coming excuse me pooping uh gold coins that was something else hey I wanted to share this real quick old radios uh was uh playing with a computer and taking some more of our uh favorite quote unquote favorite characters and uh was um running them through some AI to uh make them so this is Al the alligator from um that science series that we showed kind of Noir science series why isn't this going what's going on there there we go we got some variations on this um so he took a screenshot and then he ran in there's an 8 bit version of him uh or maybe that's the 16bit version this is the best one this is my favorite it basically made a person wearing a green jacket and hat whose nose is kind of weird uh there's another odd one but uh thank you uh old radios for that um he also did them for um Harvin Marv those uh hippies that I don't like and um else did he do oh wondercat of course uh I'll share those later this week but thank you old radios for that um for spending um whatever resources you had to run those through a computer um yes Uncle Smiley that is uh one of the things that supposedly uh old radios is going to be working on is Uncle Smiley so uh yes what a day it was today we learned a lot um anyways uh I
