Description: Documents through indigenous sound the construction of winter quarters designed to last till the spring thaw. Shows the building of an igloo and moving in household items. Details the construction of a skin sled out of the skins which had formed the roof of the karmak, frozen fish, and the bones and antlers from caribou.Documents through indigenous sound the establishment of the Autumn Camp by Netsilik Eskimos, where the first activity by the men is to build a temporary shelter called a karmak while the women gather stocks of moss for the lamp and fire. Shows the men fishing through the ice with spears. Depicts family life and family groups, providing insights into the cultural habits of the people.Produced in cooperation with the National Film Board of Canada. Documentary of how the Netsilik Eskimos set up an autumn camp in the river valley, build temporary shelters, called karmaks, of snow and animal skins, and fish through the river of ice. Recommended for use with Man, a course of study., Part One: Netsilik Eskimos build karmaks of snow or ice covered with skins as shelters until the snow is packed enough to build igloos. The men fish and the women gather moss. Family meal of fish is cooked and eaten in the karmak. Part Two: Eskimos build igloo and construct a sled of tent skins, frozen fish, caribou antlers, and seal-skin thong. Woman makes caribou parka, children play, family packs up and moves down river.
