Description: The purpose of this presentation is to describe and demonstrate the regulation of arterial blood pressure. This objective is achieved with the aid of diagrams, animation, and several experiments on a decerebrate rabbit. In this presentation the general anatomical arrangement of the nervous and cardiovascular structures are illustrated and described. These structures include the afferent nerves, the depressor nerve, branch of the vagus, carotid sinus nerves, glossopharyngeal nerves, centers in the medulla, the pressor and depressor components of the vasomotor center, and the cardioinhibitory area. Three nerves are then exposed and isolated in the anesthetized rabbit, the vagus, depressor and cervicosympathetic. The blood pressure is recorded by means of a catheter in the right femoral artery. Pulse pressure waves are recorded out on a Beeper Physiograph, projected onto a screen, and monitored and amplified by a loudspeaker. The heart rate and second time marker are also projected on the screen. Experiments are then conducted to determine the electrical activity in the left depressor nerve. The effects of intravenous injection of adrenalin in this nerve and the associated pressure rise are then demonstrated. The effects of an intravenous injection of acetylcholine are also demonstrated. Both carotid arteries are then clamped for 10 seconds, and the effects are noted on the projection screen. The effects of cutting both depressor nerves is also demonstrated. Finally, the thorax is opened, and the heart is observed directly to note the effects when both vagus nerves are cut
