ARK Two: The Computer in Architecture

Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news on October 28, 1966. The broadcast script for this date has not survived. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Earl Sears murder trial. Shots of jury in courtroom, Sears and his attorney conferring, jury leaving the courtroom, man exiting into the corridor. Segment 2 (sound): Outdoor podium set up with audience in chairs; dark-haired man walking past the library, smiling at the camera; man at podium is interrupted by another man who addresses the man as a member of the political science faculty, Dr. Leach (?) and says that he and Mr. Taliskoff (or Talisker?) were jointly asked to be there, and wouldn't the audience benefit from seeing the candidates side by side? The audience claps at this suggestion. Cut to interview with the man who interrupted, who says, about his opponent, "He was invited by the League of Women Voters and he turned that down. He's been invited by Hartnell College to appear with me, and he turned that down. He's been invited today by Monterey Peninsula College to appear with me, and he turned that down. He has taken a fixed position apparently on the advice of his campaign manager, Mr. Harvey Hancock, that he will not debate anywhere with me. I can only surmise that his record is so bad that he could not withstand the relentless examination that I would give that record." Segment 3 (sound). San Jose Mayor Ron James interviewed. "In the course of negotiations with the County, the possibility of the police building being located and retained at Civic Center has always been considered as an alternative, and certainly that alternative still exists today." He's asked why he would want to retain the police building at the Civic Center, and answers that it would benefit from close proximity to jail and courts, and improved cooperation between city and county at this location. Reel 2 (sound): Interview with [San Jose State College] football coach about their upcoming game, and how they handled their game with Texas Western. Reel 3: Segment 1 (color, sound): Footage of GM electric cars -- the Electrovair and Electrovan, with voice-over. "The news reporter saw demonstrations of two electrically powered vehicles -- a battery propelled passenger car, and a van powered by fuel cells..." Shots of the car and the van driving down streets, close-up of the car motor, two cars parked in front of a fountain. The passenger car motor is briefly explained, and statistics given about each. The car can go from 0 to 60 in 16 seconds, with speeds up to 80 mph and a 40-80 mile range. Segment 2 (sound): Track and field coach Bud Winter interviewed about preparation for the Mexico City Olympics. "Grill's (?) criticism was not at the Olympics, or Mexico City, or the altitude, but at the U.S. leadership in preparing distance runners for the Mexico City Olympics." Winter says there's not much time, and other countries have already been training their athletes at high attitude in preparation. People have talked about doing training up at Lake Tahoe, but nothing has happened yet. Segment 3 (sound): Further interview with San Jose State football coach about upcoming University of Pacific game, and status of Danny Holman's injuries. Reel 4: Segment 1 (sound): Bernice Brown campaigning outside a store, shaking hands and greeting people. The reporter asks her whether she finds it necessary to campaign for her husband. "Well, I woudn't say it's necessary, but people like to see their governor's wives and candidates' wives, and I'm enjoying it, going around this great big state of ours." Segment 2 (silent): Small conference room, people meeting around a table, with plans on the wall for the Auzerais Project, in the vicinity of Market Street, First Street, Auzerais Avenue, and San Carlos in downtown San Jose. Reel 5: Segment 1 (silent): Men working on cylindrical and rocket-shaped metal objects inside a lab; clean room with man working at microscope. Segment 2 (sound): Older man interviewed. Question off-camera. Response, "I don't think so, no, I think it's a personal attack.
