Shows King Henry elevating Becket to the chancellorship of the realm; his later appointment of Becket as Archbishop of Canterbury; the conflict which occurs between the two after a baron kills a priest; Becket's meeting with Pope Alexander III, who refuses to relieve him from the duties of Archbishop; Becket's decision to return to England; his meeting with Henry on the shore at Freteval; and his murder in church by barons. Presents Richard Burton as Thomas Becket and Peter O'Toole as King Henry II.
