Presents a history of the United States from before the American War of Independence to the compilation of the Monroe Doctrine in the early nineteenth century. Focuses on America’s first ambassador, Benjamin Franklin, and American relations with the European powers during the War of Independence, the French Revolution and the era of Napoleon, the War of 1812 and the formulation of the Monroe Doctrine.
