Description: Tony Saletan joins “the 1,000 stout young men wanted for the fleet of what ships fitting out for the North and South Pacific fisheries.” On board the “Charles W. Morgan” in Mystic, Connecticut, he shows how the captain and crew of a New England whaler spent three, four, or five years on the high seas –carving ivory whale teeth, watching, waiting, and finally sighting the whale. The excitement of the chase and catch is captured in a film clip from the motion picture “Down to the Sea in Ships.”, Tours with Tony Saletan the last remaining 19th century whaling ship, preserved in Mystic, Connecticut, with insights into what took place in the days when the vessel earned its way by searching out, killing, and removing oil from the world's largest creatures. Presents the actual harpooning of a giant sperm whale from a small, six man boat. Describes what the on-board life to the captain and the crew might have been like.
