Description: The main character of this iconographic adaptation is Grace, an African-American girl who loves to act out stories. Among her favorite characters are Joan of Arc, Anansi the Spider, Hiawatha and Mowgli. At school, however, Grace's classmates tell her that she cannot play Peter Pan in the school play because she is black and a girl. Grace confides her disappointment to her mother and grandmother. Grace's Nana takes her to a ballet performance starring a black ballerina. With newly-found confidence, Grace shines at the audition and later dazzles the audience with her wonderful portrayal of Peter Pan.
